We had an amazing weekend and experience and you were a part of it because you are a part of our lives! Many students made decisions to follow Jesus in their lives and commit themselves more to lives of faith in God. Lenten Study: The Walk

with God. These practices are meant to be a part of our daily walk

Ash Wednesday and the Season of Lent

Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word

lencten, which means “spring.” The season is a preparation for celebrating Easter. Historically, Lent

began as a period of fasting and preparation for baptism by converts. Over time, it became a time of

penance for all Christians.

Our observance of Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, dates in the Western church at least to the tenth

century. On this day, we confront our own mortality and confess our sin before God within the community of faith. The form and content of the service focus on the dual themes of sin and death in the light of God’s

redeeming love in Jesus Christ. The use of ashes as a sign of mortality and repentance has a long history in

Jewish and Christian worship.

The custom we observe, “imposing” ashes on the forehead, dates back to the twelfth century. We save the palm branches from the previous Passion/Palm

Sunday service and burn them ahead of time to produce the ashes for the Ash Wednesday Service.

The words “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” remind us of our mortality. Similar

words are spoken during a graveside committal service: “This body we commit to the ground, earth to

earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.”

Thank you Wesley family for all of your prayers and support for youth at Resurrection this past weekend! We had an amazing weekend and experience and you were a part of it because you are a part of our

lives! Many students made decisions to follow Jesus in their lives and commit themselves more to lives of

faith in God. My prayer is that they continue to grow in their love for God and for others, and may this be so

for all of us as vital parts of the body of Christ. Thanks again for being you!

The peace of Christ be with you,

Jane

Hello from the Congo, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year celebration. We want to say thank you so much to all supporters to make this Christmas happier with the gifts and foods. Our Christmas and New Year was wonderful to both orphanages. As you can see in the picture, most of the kids wanted a new pair of shoes, so the directors of the two orphanages got the sizes of each kids and went into town to buy shoes. Because the government is fixing roads, there’s a lot of traffic that you can’t imagine - it was so hard to bring them into town. Only a few of the growing up kids bought clothes and wanted just to wear it for the party. Thank you so much again. Blessings, Fresie Chikomb

Dear Wesley, Thank you so very much for opening your doors so lovingly to all at Jeremiah School for our Christmas Showcase. It was such a blessing to share your beautiful sanctuary, and the added refreshments were wonderful. I pray this can be the beginning of a beautiful partnership. Board Member, Angie Tolley

UMM Breakfast | Saturday, February 15th | 8:30—9:30am Our men’s club, which was chartered in 2003, and championed by our late Jim Dishner, has been inactive long enough. I have been continuously moved by the Holy Spirit to reactivate our group of men for fellowship and sharing. Our format will change slightly, in that we will not have speakers on a regular basis. We will have a short devotion with discussion to follow. This will be a time of getting to know your fellow church members and show love that can spread through our congregation. All men, all ages, please join us Saturday, February 15th, at 8:30 am. I will be there and I assure you I will have a delicious breakfast awaiting you. Please sign up on the bulletin tab for this event. Thanks, Jim Stouffer
