Loxton to Berri (return) Dinghy Run.

Sunday 10th February.

Overcast skies greeted us on Sunday

morning 10th of February, actually a welcome

relief after a few very hot days. Eight boats

set out from the Loxton floating wharf onto a

glassy smooth river. Lester and I were

passengers in Trip Leaders Ian & Jenny

Schober’s’ boat. Also, on the water were

Grant & Judy Westley accompanied by a

grandchild and Chris Bennett, Denise & Bill

Wilksch, Rob & Judith Howie, Rod & Sue Bradtke

with Dennis Peltz at the tiller and the Venning family. Neville & Sue Beelitz and

Mick Logan & Annie Pfeiffer travelled together in style in a covered craft and

Warren Hennig travelled solo. Later Terry Mowbray caught up with the flotilla.

Travelling in the front we were delighted to be riding on a river without a ripple. Some of

the photos say it all. The reflections were a delight. Of course the boats behind had our

wash to contend with. It was pretty cool whipping through the air as we left Loxton

behind. There were a few people overnighting along the banks at what looked like idyllic

campsites. Pelicans paid no attention to us as we hurried by.

Before we knew it, we were at our smoko spot, a lovely long beach where we all pulled in.

Morning tea was enjoyed by all and it was here that Terry caught up with us. Leaving at

about 10.30 our next destination was the Katarapko Creek weir.

This was not far up the creek from the river and so was only a short detour.

Germein Gorge/Bridle Track near Port Pirie:

Leave Berri at 8.00am en-route via Burra to Lawrie Park. Set up camp. Visiting a winery/Devonshire tea, returning via bridle track. Tea will be supplied by Napperby tennis club. A walk around the reservoir and park Sunday morning before returning home. Trip Leaders: Phil & Ruth Rosewarne and Elaine Packer.

Barossa Weekend (Waikerie to Saunders Gorge)

Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 May Trip will depart from Waikerie visiting points of interest, then Saunders Gorge to camp. Campers & caravans welcome. (toilets only). Be self-sufficient. Vehicle requires low range plus standard recovery kit, sand flag and UHF radio. Cost: $70/per vehicle (includes camping fees + 4wd track) Minimum 6 vehicles. Trip Leaders: Neville and Sue Beelitz, Heather Richardson and Trevor Drew

Ceduna Oyster Fest (extended trip)

Trip leaves Berri Tuesday 1 October and returns Tuesday 8 October, travelling via Pt Augusta, Pt Lincoln. Members may wish to make their own way home via the Elliston sandhills. Oyster Festival over long weekend. Distance: Approximately 1150km—8 vehicle limit. More information later

for us and the nine craft all cruised in slowly.

After the lock opened we were

away again as the clouds

started breaking up showing

some blue sky. Then it was under

the Berri Bridge and finding a

spot to tie up in front of the Berri

Hotel.

Lunch was a

jolly affair.

us for lunch, Bev

Carol Bennett.

Then it was off again and before too

long we took a left turn into Salt

Creek which seemed to turn into

Gurra Gurra Creek as we went under

the road bridge. How many times

have I gone over this bridge

travelling between Berri to Loxton

but never before under it.

Once out of the creek we zipped along towards the lock and again waited for it to open. Then

on to Loxton passing red cliffs glowing in the sunshine. I hadn’t even noticed them in the grey

of the morning. I thought that north of Renmark had bragging rights for red cliffs in the

Riverland, but these were nearly as spectacular.

We were lined up at the wharf to take our turn at the boat ramps at about 4pm. That was a

slow procedure as we didn’t have them to ourselves. There was a bit of a pow wow for

thankyous and goodbyes after a most enjoyable day. Ian told us that he was planning to

lead another expedition from Berri to Renmark at the same time next year. I’m sure there

will be many happy 4WD Club boaties looking forward to it.

First Aid Kits

It's important to keep a well-stocked first aid kit in your home and car, with any medical supplies you may need in an emergency. Here is an example of items that we recommend including:

• First aid booklet

• Triangular bandages – non-elastic bandages used for slings, to hold splints in place and to re-strict movement.

• Crepe ('conforming' or elastic) bandages of varying widths – these elastic bandages are used to create pressure, hold dressings in place, reduce swelling and provide some support.

• Non-adhesive (non-stick) dressings of varying sizes – best used for covering burnt or abraded (scraped or grazed) skin.

• Disposable gloves (medium and large), preferably made of non-latex material

• Thermal blanket - can be used when a patient is suffering from shock

• Adhesive tape (2.5 cm wide – preferably a permeable tape such as Micropore)

• Resuscitation mask or face shield

• Medium combine dressing pads (9 x 20 cm) - used to help control bleeding and reduce the risk of infection.

• Large combine dressing pads (20 x 20 cm) - used to help control bleeding and reduce the risk of infection.

• Adhesive dressing strips (bandaids) - used for minor cuts and skin injuries. Never use adhesive dressings on burnt or abraded skin.

• Medium gauze dressing (7.5 x 7.5 cm)

• Four sterile tubes of saline solution (minimum 10 ml) - to flush out eyelashes, dust, sand or similar particles from the eye. Never attempt to remove an object that is embedded in or has penetrated an eye – in such an instance, seek ur-gent medical attention.

• One pair of scissors

• One pair of tweezers

• Plastic bags of varying sizes

• Notepad and pencil It is not recommended to store medications in your first aid kit. Medications such as paracetamol and aspirin should be kept secure and out of reach of children.
