DON'T HAVE IT RUINED

Did you get the phone call? I have received two phone calls from two different numbers in two different states directing me to call two different numbers to find out why the IRS is starting a lawsuit against me. This is very disturbing, even though you and I know that the IRS will never:………

• The IRS will never Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.

• The IRS will never Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.

• The IRS will never Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.

• The IRS will never Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone. • The IRS will never Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have

you arrested for not paying. Scammers are able to alter caller ID numbers to make it look like the IRS is calling. They use fake names and bogus IRS badge numbers. They often leave "urgent" callback requests. They prey on the most vulnerable people, such as the elderly, newly arrived immigrants and those whose first language is not English. Scammers have been known to impersonate agents from IRS Criminal Investigation as well. These criminals try to scare and shock you into providing personal financial information on the spot while you are off guard. Don't be taken in and don't engage these people over the phone.

On October 27th, 2015 the "Caregiver Advise, "Caregiver Advise, "Caregiver Advise, "Caregiver Advise, Revise, Enable (CARE) Act"Revise, Enable (CARE) Act"Revise, Enable (CARE) Act"Revise, Enable (CARE) Act" was signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo. It promises to ensure that family caregivers will be included in critical aspects of the hospital discharge process for years to come. Previously passed by the state Assembly and Senate, the CARE Act will be implemented in the Spring of 2016.

What is The CARE Act? What is The CARE Act? What is The CARE Act? What is The CARE Act? The bill features three important provisions:

1. The name, phone number and address of the family caregiver is recorded when a loved one is admitted into a hospital or rehabilitation facility;

2. The family caregiver is notified if the loved one is to be discharged to another facility or back home at least 24 hours in advance; and,

3. The facility must provide an explanation and live instruction of the medical tasks – such as medication management, injections, wound care, and transfers – that the family caregiver will perform at home.

A Cute Poem Most Can Relate To!A Cute Poem Most Can Relate To!A Cute Poem Most Can Relate To!A Cute Poem Most Can Relate To! - by Joanne Bailey Baxter

(found on FaceBook)

When I’m an old lady, I’ll live with each kid,

And bring so much happiness just as they did.

I want to pay back all the joy they’ve provided.

Returning each deed! Oh, they’ll be so excited!

When I’m an old lady and live with my kids.

I’ll write on the walls with reds, whites and blues,

And I’ll bounce on the furniture wearing my shoes.

I’ll drink from the carton and then leave it out.

I’ll stuff all the toilets and oh, how they’ll shout!

When I’m an old lady and live with my kids.

When they’re on the phone and just out of reach,

I’ll get into things like sugar and bleach.

Oh, they’ll snap their fingers and shake their head,

When I’m an old lady and live with my kids.

When they cook dinner and call me to eat,

I’ll not eat my green beans or salad or meat.

I’ll gag on my okra, spill milk on the table,

And when they get angry I’ll run if I’m able!

When I’m an old lady and live with my kids.

I’ll sit close to the TV, through channels I’ll click,

I’ll cross both eyes just to see if they stick.

I’ll take off my socks and throw one away,

And play in the mud ‘til the end of the day!

When I’m an old lady and live with my kids.

And later in bed, I’ll lay

back and sigh.

I’ll thank God in prayer

and then close my eyes.

My kids will look down with

a smile slowly creeping,

And say with a groan,

“She’s so sweet when she’s sleeping!”

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommends vaccines

needed by all adults. Lewis County Public Health follows these

recommendations, as well as the ACIP (Advisory Committee on

Immunization Practices) to safely guide our patients in

vaccinations. In a study by the CDC published in February of

2015 it states vaccination coverage levels among adults are low.

It concludes that improvement in adult vaccination rates is

needed to reduce the health consequences of vaccine-preventable diseases among adults.

Influenza (Flu) vaccine is recommended every year. CDC recommends that people get the Flu vaccine as

soon as it becomes available. Depending on the flu season, it can be given right into the Spring months.

The Flu vaccine is safe and does not cause the flu. It is the single most important way to prevent the

spread of flu, which can be deadly.

Every adult should get the Tdap vaccine once if they did not receive it as an adolescent to protect against

pertussis (whooping cough). A Td (tetanus, diphtheria) booster shot is then recommended every 10 years.

In addition, women should get the Tdap vaccine each time they are pregnant, preferably at 27 through 36

weeks to protect their baby.

Other vaccines you may need as an adult are determined by factors such as age, lifestyle, health

conditions, employment and international travel. We urge you to call your physician to check on your

vaccine status.

Call Lewis County Public Health with questions or for guidance with vaccines you may need at

376-5453. Free vaccines are available to both adults and children who are uninsured, call for details.

Menu Planning – As Easy as 1, 2, 3 ? By: Melissa Forney, MS, RDN, LPN

Have you ever wondered what planning goes into the menu provided through Lewis County Office for

the Aging – both at the Congregate Meal Sites and through the Home-Delivered Meal Program? Well, let’s

take a closer look at what goes into the menu creation process…

When the menu for Lewis County Office for the Aging Nutrition Program is created there are two main

steps taken; which includes menu planning followed by a nutrient analysis of all menu items. Let’s take a look

and break it down:

Menu Planning includes:

- A seasonal appropriate menu that is going to be most appealing for everyone during a particular

season…warm hearty winter foods and cold lighter foods in the summer.

- A 4-6 week cycle menu to provide daily and weekly variety, which then repeats after that cycle is

complete. For example a 4 week cycle menu would end on week 4 and then start over again.

- Consumer (aka: you!) feedback is incorporated into the menus as much as possible.

- Food groups and serving size according to current Dietary Guidelines for Americans to include:

Bread or Bread Alternate (1 slice bread or ½ cup pasta)

Vegetable (½ cup cooked or raw)

Fruit (1/2 cup chopped or medium fresh fruit such as apple or banana)

Milk ( 1 cup)

Meat or Meat Alternate (3 oz. edible portion of meat, ½ cup beans, peas, or lentils)

Desserts (1/2 cup Fruit or Pudding most often; cakes, pies, & cookies less often)

*This meal pattern can be used as a guide for your meals at home too!

- Cooking methods and amounts of food items on day’s menu need consideration to go hand-in-

hand with staff and equipment needs.

- Standard recipes are used for food items in an effort to create appropriate amounts, portions, and

overall uniformity of foods each and every time.

Nutrient Analysis includes:

- Ensuring those standard recipes are entered into a computerized nutrient analysis software system

for the most accurate results when analyzing a menu item.

- Each day’s menu is entered into the nutrient analysis software and analyzed; which provides a total

for calories, protein, carbohydrates, total fat, vitamins, and nutrients. Each day’s totals are

reviewed by the Registered Dietitian to ensure that the meals provided are meeting 1/3rd of the

Recommended Dietary Allowance…basically making sure that you are getting 1/3rd of your daily

nutrient needs!

This menu planning and nutrient analysis is just a basic overview of what happens when your menu

through Lewis County Office for the Aging is planned. If you have any suggestions, thoughts, comments, or

questions please do not hesitate to call me at 315-376-5668.

closings. If any of the schools in Lewis

conditions, any congregate nutrition site in

that district WILL ALSO BE CLOSED - THIS ALSO

INCLUDES HOME DELIVERED MEALS. Any closings

would be announced on WLLG (The Moose);

The safety of our seniors, site staff, meal

Just a Friendly Reminder…….

Nothing is more frustrating than driving all the way to our office for help with problems and/or questions about one of our services, only to find that the employee you need to see is busy assisting another client or not available. Given the number and complexity of issues we help within our office, we are asking that you please call ahead to see if you need an appointment before coming into the office. We want you to get the assistance you desire and this will also reduce your wait time and increase our ability to see EVERYONE in a timely manner!
