I recently sat down with a client to discuss how things are going on one of our projects. The project was near completion and I was curious to hear some feedback on our performance. He had very high praise of the job we did, and it was extremely encouraging to hear we exceeded his expectations. I wanted to make sure he wasn’t just giving me lip service, so I dug a little deeper. I asked him to elaborate on our performance and what exactly we did that stood out.

He said “Man! Y’all showed up when you said you would. The team picked up the phone when I called. When there was an issue, they brought it to us before we discovered it. The frames were fabricated and installed correctly.” A bit confused, I asked, “Well that’s what we are supposed to do isn’t it? He replied, “You have no idea how many people don’t do any of these things.”

This conversation really struck a chord with me. What he explained to me as “above and beyond” were the fundamentals of what we should be doing. It’s the blocking and tackling that should be automatic with every person and every project. Think about your favorite vendor partner. What do they do that makes them a top pick? Now think about some of the not so good performers. Where do they miss the mark? More times than not it boils down to the fundamentals!

How do we set ourselves apart and make strides toward being best in class? We need to be on a relentless pursuit of the fundamentals. Communicate with your project team. Show up when you say you’re going to show up. Do what you say you’re going to do. Get in front of mistakes. Work as a team. Praise the team when they do a good job! At times, we tend to overcomplicate what it takes to be the best. Our success lies in the blocking and tackling of our every day lives. Keep it simple, keep it consistent and let’s finish the year strong!

I’m happy to report that most of you are regularly following our safety policies and procedures. Following our safety policies and procedures is critical to help avoid injuries and maintain a safe work environment. We are committed to creating and maintaining an industry leading safety program.

While our record for safety is strong, there is always room for improvement. To make this point, we had an unfortunate recordable injury last quarter. A worker was in mid lift of a preglazed unit when his left bicep tore. This incident happened while completing a typical process our employees do daily. The root cause of this injury was the employee was in confined area without much room to move and lift correctly. As Dynamic Glass continues to grow, we are involved in larger jobs with different and unfamiliar site conditions. Please continue to follow our safety policies and procedures and watch out for your coworker’s safety as well as your own. Complacency is a major risk and sometimes we are too focused on production or a task and overlook safety which is why it is important for each of you to watch out for your coworkers. If we watch out for ourselves and out coworkers, we can significantly reduce the risk of injury and create a safe environment for the whole team.

If you see something unsafe speak up, you could save a life!

Christus Spohn Shoreline Hospital is a major expansion for the hospital system down in Corpus Christi. They have added a 10 story tower along with major renovations to several of the existing structures. McCarthy Building Companies selected Dynamic to be awarded the contract after considering several other major players in our market area. The hospital is situated along Shoreline Drive that overlooks Corpus Christi Bay just on the edge of the downtown district. It’s features includes both window walls and curtain walls, automatic and manual doors, and a beautiful 2 story lobby entry. Of course, with this situated next to the open water of the Gulf and being an essential facility during storms, all components had to meet the most stringent hurricane ratings available.

What did you find most challenging about executing a project of this size? Meeting the extreme high wind loads and hurricane ratings was a lot tougher than I initially first thought. The hurricane engineer/inspector overseeing the exterior envelope was a lot more involved with inspecting every bit of work during the installation process than I have ever been a part of. Reports were made daily, and he did not miss a thing. Once we were able to get a good grip on what he focused on and was expecting out of us, we were able to satisfy his requirements. That led to a good rapport between us, him, and the contractor for the duration of the project. One more item of a challenge was the fact that the jobsite is 4 hours away from our facility. Logistics was sometimes a little difficult to deal with. However, I think that we were able to meet all the needs of our crews and customer with minor hindrances. What did you like most about being a part of the project? To me, the fact that I was in on the front end for this project from the time that McCarthy contacted us to bid on this job and to see it thru until completion was very rewarding. During the bidding process, there were numerous options on what they wanted, but what they could afford was another story. Helping out with the design aspect is what I love to do. We were able to give them almost exactly what they wanted, but well under budget from the original design. Additionally, the compliments that the GC gave us for doing a great job with the unique challenges presented, made it awesome. Most of all of their team members stated that they want us to be their glass company of choice for ALL of their projects. And I totally agree, they were a great team to work with and for. I want more of their work.

What takeaways do you have from this project to apply to future large projects? This one was a bit of a challenge at first dealing with the huge impact load requirements and how strict you have to follow every detail precisely. The knowledge I learned on this project has equipped me to perform better on the two Ineos Chemical Plant Office Buildings that are blast rated, basically large missile impact rated on steroids taken to a whole new level. Can you name an example of the DG team working together to succeed? From start to finish, the whole team had to do their best to achieve success on this one. Given the fact that is was a long way from Houston, there were very little margins for errors of any kind. No job goes completely perfect, but this one had to in order to be successful. There were a few minor issues at the start, but then everyone pulled together to make it happen. And did it ever, one of the best jobs I have ever been associated with given the degree of difficulty. My hats off to all the Dynamic team members that helped make this one a huge success. What is your favorite feature of the project? To me, the two story entry lobby area is the show piece for the entire project. It features radiused, curved glazed curtain walls that allows high visibility into the main hospital lobby behind it. And the craftsmanship that the fab team and installation crew put into these walls helps accentuate its unique characteristics. Is there something most don’t know about the project that you would like to share? It has to be the fact that the hurricane engineer/inspector made us meet a 130 PSF load factor just because the Miami/Dade County Test reports for the Kawneer 1630 IR system showed that to be the maximum rating it could achieve. The main building is rated only at 90 PSF, and for most projects, that is what we are asked to meet, just what the building is rated for. I am confident that during a major storm, even if the building has some failures, our walls will not. We are rock solid.
