By Ben PollardDFS ambassador Sam Grimley knows a thing or two about taking your opportunities.

After all, it took him three and a half years just to win the opportunity to make his AFL debut with Hawthorn.

Drafted by the Hawks with pick no.39 in the 2009 National Draft, Sam was a raw ruckman who had played basketball for much of his teenage life.

He played footy for several years early in his junior career, but gave it away suddenly to pursue his love of basketball until just before he turned 18.

A forced break from sport due to two hip operations made Sam reconsider his options and he returned to football for his final underage year, in which he showed enough potential to be drafted by Hawthorn.

Maybe his time out of the game explains why it took the 22 year old a while to become ready for senior AFL football.

Or maybe it’s because – for a long time – he wasn’t taking the opportunities every match and training session presented to him.

“As a young kid, I had a tendency to float through seasons and training sessions and I definitely did that last year in the VFL,” Sam said.

“I just waited for (an opportunity) to happen as opposed to really going and grabbing it with two hands, which I think I’ve been able to do this year.”

Sam put a disappointing 2012 behind him and “attacked” pre-season training with all he had. Several months later, that work paid off when an opportunity presented itself.

In the week before Hawthorn’s Round 9 match against Gold Coast, Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson asked Sam what he was doing that Sunday afternoon.

‘Clarko’ said he’d better cancel any plans, because he was playing his first game of AFL football.

“I couldn’t wipe the grin off my face,” Sam said. “I pretty much hugged him

and thanked him for all his support over the years.

“It was something I’ll always remember.”

Sam doesn’t remember much of the game though, but he knows he booted a goal with his first kick.

Something else that stuck with him was a lesson he wants to pass on to young footballers aspiring to one day make an AFL debut of their own.

“As a young kid, my number one focus would just be to enjoy it and have fun, but number two would definitely be trying not to float through training sessions,” Sam said.

“Even if it’s just a one-hour training session, if you get one thing out of it you’ve done your job.”

Having worked with DFS since he first landed at Hawthorn, Sam has been passing on his wisdom to aspiring young footballers for a while now.

“I was at DFS in my second year at the club and one of the younger kids came up to me and said: ‘You’re my favourite player and I’ve got no.35 on my Hawks jumper,’” Sam recalled.

“I hadn’t even played a game yet! That was a good moment.”

He doesn’t know if coaching will become a future career path, but for now he’s just enjoying the opportunity to give back to the kids.

“When I was young, whenever you got the chance to have an AFL footballer come to a clinic, it’d be fantastic,” Sam said. “I just try and put myself in their shoes and enjoy it as much as I can.

“I’ve taken every opportunity I’ve had with DFS and now I’m the ambassador. It happened pretty quickly and I’m really enjoying it.”

Now two games into a promising AFL career and several years down a potential coaching path, Sam Grimley has gotten to where he is by taking his opportunities.

DFS will be having a Tackers Day (or two) of its own on July 10 and 11!

Please refer to the flyer on the final page of this newsletter for more details on the DFS July school

holiday programs for YJFL players. 100 Yarra juniors attended the April programs, as did AFL players Jack

Ziebell and Alan Toovey!

The Yarra Junior Football League fully endorses the Dynamic Footy Skills school

holiday development programs.

Lucas Northeast likes playing to his strengths.

And luckily for those who have seen Lucas play footy, his strengths are spectacular to watch: “I grab the ball and go for runs”.

The DFS regular and Greensborough JFC player did plenty of running when he was named the Northern FL U14 Division 1 team’s best player in its opening AFL Victoria Metropolitan Junior Championships match against the Yarra JFL.

Lucas spent most of the game on a wing and said it was “a lot of fun to see how good the talent was”.

Lucas was joined in the match by one of his good mates – and another DFS regular – Lucas Soccio... Except they were on opposing sides.

Soccio had the last laugh as the YJFL won by three points, but the NFL boys were far

from disgraced with Northeast tearing up and down the Bulleen Park surface.

Both boys completed the 2012 DFS Summer Training Program (STP) late last year and the 2013 DFS Pre-Season Training Program (PTP).

Lucas Northeast said the programs helped him improve what he does best and the results are showing in his performances.

“It’s probably given me a lot of confidence to take off and run when I get the ball,” he said.

Lucas said the DFS programs also helped him improve his marking skills and his non-preferred left-foot kick.

With speed, endurance and agility already part of the package, plus his ability to be clean with the ball at ground level, Lucas is well on the way to achieving his dream of going for a long, raking run in the AFL someday.

Richmond’s Dylan Grimes visits DFS Saturday Skills SessionsRichmond AFL player Dylan Grimes was a special guest at the three DFS Saturday Skills Sessions held on June 1.

The 21-year-old defender spent the one-hour sessions passing his wisdom on to 35 Northern FL interleague players.

Grimes focused on tackling pressure, tackling technique and what to do when being tackled – vital skills in the highly-contested modern game.

He provided demonstrations of the little tactics that his star Tigers teammate Dustin Martin uses to make him a great in-close contested player.

NFL U13 Division 1 and South Morang JFC player Josh Tonna said it was “awesome” to have Grimes visit the Saturday Skills Sessions.

“He’s such a good coach and was able to give me some really good tips on how to use my body and also what to do when being tackled,” Tonna said.

“I loved it so much I stayed for another hour.”

Also in attendance at the Sessions was Northern Knights Under 16s coach Joel Steindl, who worked with the players on their contested and uncontested ground ball skills.

Another NFL player to complete the program was Taylah Barbara (above), who was recently ajudged best on ground in the NFL Youth Girls interleague match vs SEJ.

Taylah played a tremendous game, displaying her ‘never give-up’ attitude against stronger opposition.

DFS loved working with Taylah and were ecstatic about her performance. Especially considering this is Taylah’s first year playing footy and she had a fractured wrist during the lead up to the Championships.

The 2013 DFS Summer Training Program is coming! The 2013 DFS Summer Training Program is on the horizon!

This year’s STP will be the sixth off-season training program DFS has delivered and it promises to be the biggest yet.

The STP will be held across three fantastic locations due to popular demand, ensuring

easy access for talented junior players from the NFL, YJFL, EFL, RDFL and EDFL who possess the ‘Ability & Ambition’.

Invites will be sent to players from these leagues via their clubs in August. Players who participated in the 2013 interleague carnivals will receive an automatic invite.

230 talented players participated in DFS programs last off-season.

The 2012 STP included a training session and tour at the Hawthorn FC’s home base, the Ricoh Centre (Waverley Park), and matches played at the Collingwood FC’s spiritual home, Victoria Park.

Last year’s program also featured a presentation from former AFL head coach Mark Williams at the induction night.

Everyone at DFS is looking forward to the 2013 STP with excitement and we hope you are too!
