STUDENT ILLNESS - “24-HOUR RULE”

We introduced a new practice last year that is already in place at many other schools. We want children to reduce the chances of passing on highly infectious disease and also to give them time to recover. We request that after an incident of vomiting or diarrhea, that you keep your child at home for a full 24 hours after the last incident. Children often feel much better after vomiting but the illness can reoccur if they are not fully recovered. We thank

you for your assistance in this as we make every effort to keep all of our students and staff healthy here at school and reduce the risk of passing an illness from one person to another.

REPORTING AN ABSENCE OR LATE

Please remember to report your child’s absence to the school secretary before 8:30 a.m. You can use the ‘Report Absence or Late’ link on our website—bondar.abbyschools.ca or you can email [email protected] or call the office at 604-864-8572.

When students arrive after the morning welcome bell at 8:30, they need to report to the office before going to class. If your child is marked absent and we have not heard from you, Mrs. Yokoyama will phone home to confirm that he/she is safe at home that day. Students needing to leave the school early must have the adult picking them up stop at the office and sign them out before leaving.

THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN VISITING BONDAR SCHOOL !

All volunteers/visitors must sign in at the office and pick up a guest tag.

To minimize interruptions during lesson time, we ask that all lunches, backpacks, messages, etc. be dropped off at the office.

If you are using the washroom when visiting the school, please use the adult washroom around the corner to the left of the office to respect the privacy and safety of our students.

Dogs are not allowed on school property at any time—yes, even the friendly ones! This is a district policy that is often ignored.

PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL (P.A.C.) NEWS Students enjoyed a Subway Day in September and are looking forward to another Hot Lunch Day next month. Our first fundraiser this year was the Great Little Coupon Book. We have sold over 100 so far and there are more available in the office—$10 each. We also have Bondar Cookbooks available in the office for only $12. The Bondar Parent Advisory Council will hold their next meeting on Tuesday, November 14th at 7:00 pm in the school library. All parents are welcome! If you would like to volunteer with hot lunch days, bake sales, or fundraising, email the secretary at [email protected] or call the office to leave your name and number with Mrs. Yokoyama. Keep in touch with other Bondar parents by joining our PAC Facebook page! Look for Dr. Roberta Bondar Elementary PAC. Be sure to check the school website at bondar.abbyschools.ca for P.A.C. minutes.

SPORTS AT BONDAR

Mrs. MacIver will keep students fit all year with a variety of sports programs designed to build endurance, flexibility, strength and sportsmanship. All students in grades 2 to 5 need gym strip for P.E. classes. Please label shorts, sweats, t-shirts and gym bags. Non-marking, properly fitting runners are also needed. Be sure your child can tie laces if their runners are laced...otherwise send velcroed shoes for student safety in the gym.

The grade 4 and 5 girls and boys are ‘off and running’ in the Tuesday and Thursday morning Running Club with Mrs. MacIver, Mrs. Dorsey, Mrs. Davies, Mrs. Bains, Mrs. Lepine and Mrs. Ciulla. Some keep up the momentum throughout the week by being on the Cross Country Running Team after school as well.

We also have Mr. Blackwood putting the intermediates through their paces with soccer practices and games.

Handball is coming up in November!

TERRY FOX RUN

Thanks for your support of our Terry Fox Run event on September 20th as well as your help with our fundraising to send a donation to the Terry Fox Cancer Research Foundation. We collected almost $300!

Every student who brought in a Toonie for Terry had their name in a draw for a Terry Fox t-shirt. Our winners were Noah, Staci, Azraa, Gurveer, Anna, Jovi, Krish, Brody, Harveen, Anderson, and Arjun!!

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

Our first Book Fair of the year is coming next month to Bondar School! It will be open from Tuesday to Thursday, Nov 21-23. All students will have the chance to visit the book fair with their teacher.

Please stop in at lunch or after school one day to see what’s new!

This is a great opportunity to pick up some books for your Christmas stockings!

EMERGENCY SAFETY DRILLS

Students have been practicing safety drills . Fire drills, earthquake drills, and lockdown procedures have been carried out by staff, students, and any visitors on site at the time of the drill. Being familiar with these practices helps students know how to behave calmly and safely if an emergency situation ever arises at school. Be sure to discuss the importance of these drills with your child. Each drill is repeated several times over the school

MAKE IT A HABIT!

Well-rested students are able to get the most out of each school day. They are able to be attentive to classroom instruction, to work cooperatively with classmates, and are energetic and sociable on the playground. Getting a good night’s sleep helps them handle the many different experiences they encounter throughout the school day with enthusiasm and patience. Health Canada states . . .

Kindergarten and Grade 1s need 10-12 hours of sleep a night and

Grade 2s to Grade 5s need 10-11 hours of sleep a night.

BONDAR’S STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

Throughout the first few weeks of school, Ms. Collier visited each classroom to greet students and review our expectations for safe and friendly student behaviour. A copy of our “Student Code of Conduct” is in our student planners. This contains the rules of safe and successful behaviour in and around the school along with redirection possibilities for misbehaviour if needed.

We summarize our intentions for correct behaviour in the

“4 Be’s of Success: Be kind! Be safe! Be respectful! Be responsible!”

PARENTS AS LITERACY PARTNERS

Students who completed their summer reading goals with the Public Library’s “Walk on the Wild Side” program theme have brought their medals in to show their teachers. They were recognized for their personal responsibility and great work in practicing their reading all summer long at our first Rock-It assembly. Each student also received a certificate and a free book!

Parent support with Home Reading Programs is invaluable in building students’ reading skills. Primary students should read or be read to for 10-15 minutes a night. Intermediates should spend 20-30 minutes a night reading and then sharing what they read with parents when finished.

“Together, we make literacy happen!”

INTERIM REPORTS

The week of October 16-20 will see Interim Reports going home with every student. This is a perfect time to discuss your child’s progress with him or her and set some goals that will start the year off with successful habits.

Our students benefit from the generous gifts of time that parents, grandparents, and other caregivers share with us when they volunteer to help out with school activities. Helping with classroom projects, providing reading support, organizing fundraising projects, and supervising on field trips are just a few of the ways school programs are enhanced by our volunteers.

Parents interested in helping out can contact their child’s teacher, check in at the school office, or contact Bondar’s Parent Advisory Council (PAC) for more information. Volun-teers are asked to please sign in at the school office when coming to work with students to let us know that you are in the building.

TRAFFIC SAFETY

THANK YOU to all of our parents who are dropping off and picking up their children in a safe manner!!

Parking on Chilcotin and walking down with your child is the best option, but if you need to drive

into the parking lot, please note the following rules:

1. Drive slowly!

2. Move as far forward along our front sidewalk as possible.

3. Do not park and leave your car in the dropoff or drive-through lanes! Please have your hugs

and say your ‘goodbyes’ at home to keep this lane moving in the morning.

4. Keep moving forward to the front of the line before dropping off or

while waiting to pick up.

5. Have your child exit and enter your vehicle on the sidewalk side of

your car.

6. Please pick-up children only from the “dropoff/pickup” lane. Students

cannot safely move from the sidewalk to the drive-though lane – this lane

is for continuously moving traffic only.

7. Please remind your child to follow road-crossing safety rules when walking from the supervised

school sidewalk at the east end (traffic entrance) and the west end (traffic exit) to the city

sidewalk on Chilcotin Drive and eventually to your family car.

You are welcome to send your recycling pop cans, juice boxes, and bottles to add to our collection. Just drop them off at the school office when you’d like to get rid of them – any amount, any time! The school receives the recycling deposit to use for miscellaneous items at school. We also collect your small electronics, lightbulbs, batteries, chargers, wires, DVDs etc., to send to the recycling depot and help our environment!

RECYCLING AT BONDAR Bondar student monitors collect empty juice boxes after lunch each school day to send to the Regional Recycling Depot in Abbotsford. We have scheduled pick-up dates and authorized collection bins for our recycling materials.
