Compton Pool Winter Operation

Tampa Palms makes swimming available at the Compton

Park pool, weather permitting, even during the cold

weather. A heated swimming pool is a special Tampa

Palms luxury.

When the night temperature routinely falls to 50 degrees

or below, the following guidelines will allow everyone to

enjoy a warm Compton pool until our warm Florida

weather returns:

The pool will open at 9AM every day of the

week during the winter, weather permitting.

The pool will be covered each night with a heat-

saving cover.

The pool will not open until the outside air tem-

perature, measured at Compton Park with an out-

door thermometer, reaches a minimum of 50 de-

grees.

If it is raining, stormy or windy, the pool cover

cannot be removed or put on.

For more information as to the current temperatures or

see if the pool is open, call Compton Park 972-0897.

A Special Evening In Tampa Palms

Thomas Weiss, a Tampa Palms resident, officially received

his Eagle Scout rank at a formal presentation known as the

Court of Honor. The presentation, a significant and serious

event, took place at Compton Park- which is also the site of

Thomas’ Eagle Scout Project

For the Eagle candidate, this is the climax of his Scouting

efforts. But just as important, the attainhment of this award

is made possible by those who have supported him; his

Scoutmasters, Troop leaders, fellow Scouts, parents, family,

friends, and members of the community.

Dave Bryant acted as the Master of

Ceremonies. Dave and his family

(which also includes an Eagle

Scout) have been an integral part of

Scouting in Tampa Palms for many

years.

Dave Bryant oversaw the Eagle

Award Presentation, administered

the Eagle Charge and Oath and de-

livered the Sons of Revolution

Presentation.

In addition Dave introduced the

honored guests, principal among

whom was Hillsborough County

Commissioner Ken Hagan. Com.

Hagan, a great friend to Tampa

Palms, is almost legendary for his

unwavering support of the youth of

Hillsborough County.

The program was an inspirational

reminder of heights youth can attain

with inspiration and guidance.

A Lot Goes Into Becoming An Eagle Scout

Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attaina-

ble in the Boy Scouting program (BSA). The designation

"Eagle Scout" has a long history since its founding over

one hundred years ago. Only a small percentage of Boy

Scouts are granted this rank and then only after a lengthy

review process. The requirements necessary to achieve

this rank often take years to fulfill.

The results are startling: forty of the American astro-

nauts are Eagle Scouts, including Neil Armstrong and

Charles Duke who walked on the moon; others include a

US President, a Supreme Court Justice - quite a group.

Three young men in Tampa Palms have received this

rank in the last few years. The rigor, discipline and char-

acter needed to become an Eagle Scout, as demonstrated

by Thomas Weiss, and before him by Nick Guggemos

and Ben Geller, will serve them and their communities

for their lifetimes.

Thomas Weiss is only fourteen years old, what a Scout-

ing resume he has:

Over 900 days in elected leadership positions.

Elected by peers as SPL 2 times for a full 12 months

in the Troop’s Highest (Scout) Leadership position.

Recipient of the Young Leader Award from the Or-

der of the Arrow Southeast Region (Only 1 given

per year).

Selected to be a Staff (trainer) at two National Youth

Leadership Training Courses (NYLT).

Earned the God and Church Medal.

Earned 63 Merit Badges (21 needed for Eagle).

First Scout in Troop's 25 year history to earn Snow

Sports Merit badge.

Order of the Arrow's (Scouting Honor Society) Sem-

inole Lodge Chaplain going on 2 years.

On Schedule ? Probably

Approximately 34% of the time allocated for the project

has passed. Questions about if the project will complete

on time are usually met with the answer “we are on

schedule but for some portions of the project time is not

linear so it is too early to tell about the project”.

In the last two weeks workers replaced a 16” wastewater

forced main at this site and the project includes boring

under BB Downs.

Work that will follow includes installing an underground

“box” for TECO and removing old underground TECO

equipment. This should be complete by the end of Nov.

The CDD worked with the construction oversite firm,

KCI, to restore the Area 1 entry and exit turf for the holi-

days at no cost to Tampa Palms - even though this same

turf will be removed when work begins in early 2016.

Earth work continues on the Area 2 entry pond. At this

time there are two full crews working to contour and

shape the pools. The pond work is scheduled to continue

until mid 1st quarter, 2016…. and then the pond must fill

using only rainwater.

The CDD is working with the County on agreements to

allow Tampa Palms to enhance the pond site (landscape,

littoral plantings and a fountain) to make the look of the

pond more community compatible.

What To Do With The Christmas Tree

There are two options for disposal of Christmas trees; they

can be picked up curbside at your home or taken to one of

the County’s yard waste sites.

Curbside

Remove all decorations, lights, and tinsel

Cut the tree into sections no larger than 4-feet long and

6-inches in diameter

Place curbside on your regular yard waste collection

day

Drop off

Remove all decorations, lights, and tinsel

Take to one of the following locations:

- 346 Falkenburg Road in Tampa

- 13001 U.S. 41 in Gibsonton

- 8001 W. Linebaugh Ave. in Tampa

Tips for Other Items:

Styrofoam packing materials can

be disposed of in the gray gar-

bage cart

Oversized and large volumes of

flattened cardboard boxes may be recycled at any of

the Community Collection Centers for no additional

fee.

Strings of holiday lights may be

safely disposed of in the gray gar-

bage cart or recycled as electronics

at any of the Community Collec-

tion Centers for no additional fee.

Pre-lit and artificial trees should be

discarded as trash.

Holiday decorations and ornaments

should be discarded as trash.

Excess trash that will not fit in the gray

garbage cart may be disposed of at any

of the Community Collection Centers.

To do so, simply bring a copy of the

resident’s Hillsborough County Tax

Bill.

Holiday Refuse Collection Notes and Suggestions

Don’t Be Disappointed On Collection Day

The waste haulers are challenged this time of year due in

part to the increases in the volume of what is discarded -

both garbage and recyclables.

Schedules change and the collection teams must wisely

use every minute of the time allowed for them to collect.

This means that trucks may very well be on your street

earlier than usual. Some residents have reported “putting

their collection cans

out before they go to

work”, only to find

them still full that

night.

Make certain cans

are at the curbside

by 7 AM .

Holiday Curbside Collection Schedules:

No curbside collection of trash, recycling, or yard

waste Thursday, Nov. 26

No makeup collection days for the holidays

Questions About Device Disposal

The holidays often bring new “goodies” and questions

about proper disposal of the “old stuff”. Here are tips

about how to dispose of electronic devices.

Disposal of Electronic Devices.

Items containing a digital display or

circuit board, including televisions,

computers, laptops, mobile devices,

stereo equipment, gaming consoles,

VCR/DVD players and printers, may

be safely recycled at any of the Com-

munity Collection Centers for no ad-

ditional fee.

Small bathroom and kitchen applianc-

es such as toasters, crock pots, electric

skillets, blenders, hair dryers, and

curling irons may be discarded in

your gray garbage cart.

Bad Guys

Invest the Time To Make Your Holidays Safe

With all the fun and celebration of the holidays also

comes the bad guys waiting to take advantage of all the

hustle and bustle and confusion that comes from guests

and shopping and gifts laid out for display.

A few sensible precautions will make you and your home

safer this season. Here are some suggestions from Tampa

Police Department.

Always lock your doors and set your alarm–

even when you are home

If you display gifts, close curtains on windows

near the displays so the gifts are not obvious

from the outside.

If you use holiday lights, set a timer so that the

lights come on even when you are not home. (It

is a good idea to do that with your regular lights,

even if you do not use holiday lights).

If possible, park all of your cars in your garage.

If any vehicles are left outside, make certain that

the doors are locked and there is nothing visible

inside.

Remove garage door openers from parked cars,

even if the cars are locked. Remember a garage

door opener gives a bad guy access to your gar-

age and maybe even your home.

Always close your garage doors. An open gar-

age door is an invitation into your garage and

into your home.

If you see anyone or anything that seems

suspicious, DON”T BE SHY, call the

police. Tampa PD is very responsive and

they encourage everyone to not hesitate,

call and let them check out anything that

seems suspicious.
