Dear readers,
Team Information Centre Singapore
They say “Life is what happens
to you when you’re busy making
other plans.” This quote certainly
applies to an expat living a fast
paced life in Singapore. Such is the case for
Secina Bornhöft, who will be leaving the
DAAD by the end of October to move back to
Germany as her husband would be switching
jobs.
The new information officer, Kerstin Schulze,
will commence work in November. She is de-
picted below (right), standing next to Claudia
Finner (centre), and Secina Bornhöft (left).
In this issue ... This issue will highlight both our recent and
upcoming activities and events. Additionally, we will provide information about study and research in Germany.
There is also information about the list of scholarships provided by the DAAD. The deadline for applying for these scholarship programmes is coming up, so please turn to pages 6 and 7 to find out more.
We hope that you will enjoy reading our
newsletter. If you have any feedback or ideas
regarding its content, please do not hesitate
to contact us.

DAAD-TUM Asia Speaker Series 2015
10 September 2015: Sustainable Transpor-
tation For Urban Cities
Transport plays an integral part in our lives.
Furthermore, the economic and social activi-
ties of many countries depend on it. In this
session of the DAAD-TUM Asia Speaker Se-
ries, many participants enjoyed the various
insights offered on questions such as “What
opportunities and challenges lie ahead for our
urban mobility landscape?” and “What’s next
for sustainable transport in cities?” The
speakers were Sander De Weerd, Regional
Director, UITP (International Association of
Public Transport), Dr. Andreas Rau, Tech-
nische Universität München (TUM) Depart-
ment of Civil, Geo and Environmental Engi-
neering and Dr. George Sun, LTA Academy
Deputy Director.
15 September 2015: Building The Future of
Aerospace
The aviation industry is evolving as new
trends and technologies constantly shape its
landscape. The speakers at this event ad-
dressed questions such as “Can we draw
concepts from nature to develop our aero-
space systems?” and “What new innovations
and challenges are there in Engine Technolo-
gy?” Professor Dr. Ing. Horst Baier, Tech-
nische Universität München (TUM) Chair,
Lightweight Structures (Department of Me-
chanical Engineering) and Dr. Florian Doet-
zer, Managing Director of Composite Cluster
Singapore, were the distinguished speakers.
Medical Computing Symposium in Singa-
pore on 16 September 2015
Together with Fraunhofer IDM@NTU, we or-
ganised a Medical Computing Symposium on
16 September 2015. The symposium was a
full-day event and all talks were open to pub-
lic. After a welcome address by DAAD and
Head of Science and Technology Department
from the German Embassy Mr Sascha
Kienzle, speakers from Singapore and Ger-
many provided insights into their research
work. The goal of the symposium was to bring
together experts from Germany and Singa-
pore in the field of Medical Computing to en-
courage an exchange of ideas, serve as a
starting point for future collaborations and
strengthen the link between both countries in
this research field.
We would like to thank TUM Asia and
Fraunhofer IDM@NTU for the organisation
and all our speakers for their valuable
time.

Education Fair Study in Europe 2015
On 10th October 2015, 13 countries came
together to provide information on studies in
Europe. The fair was held at Suntec Conven-
tion Centre Singapore. Aspirants were able to
speak to the representatives of the European
countries, listen to two presentations on stud-
ies in Germany (among others) and to find
out why Europe should be their next stop for
further higher learning.
In case you were not able to attend the fair,

Europe is culturally rich and diverse! In Eu-
rope you will discover that we speak many
languages, have diverse culture and tradi-
tions. In the EU alone we have 24 official lan-
guages. Its landscapes and nature are un-
matched around the world. And thanks to the
provisions of Schengen Treaty, you may trav-

The Excellence Initia-
tive is an important
instrument for
strengthening German
higher education and
with it Germany’s tra-
ditionally strong basic
research. Since 2005
the Excellence Initia-
tive has been using
substantial govern-
ment funds to support
the cultivation of a
competitive profile, on
the one hand, and a
general increase in the
quality of higher edu-
cation on the other. Its
goal is to make Ger-
many a strong re-
search location with
improved international
competitiveness.
Funding of approxi-
mately 2.7 billion eu-
ros was made availa-
ble in 2012 for the
second phase of the
Excellence Initiative. In
all, 45 graduate
schools, 43 excellence
clusters and 11 institu-
tional strategies at a
total of 44 universities
will receive support
until 2017.

Study in Germany
World University Rankings 2015-16
Did you know?
Great news for German universities! Instead
of previously having 12 institutions of higher
education, there are now 20 German universi-
ties among the top 200 universities world-
wide; this despite many Asian universities
rising or holding their ground against the com-
petition last year. It is certainly an honourable
success!
Methodology adopted for ranking by Times
Higher Education (https://
www.timeshighereducation.com/news/ranking
-methodology-2016)
Database and criterion for publications have
been converted from Web of Science
(Thomson Reuters) to Scopus (Elsevier).

education-announces-reforms-to-world-
university-rankings). It may have had an ef-
fect as Scopus covers more Humanities.

Structured doctoral
programmes in Germany
Do you imagine yourself doing a PhD in
Germany? Depending on the academic field in
which you obtained your university degree,
there are two basic routes to do a doctoral de-
gree in Germany - if you opt for the individual
doctorate path, you have to select a professor
to be your supervisor and work largely inde-
pendently on your dissertation. The other route
would be to follow a structured doctoral pro-
gramme.
Key features of structured doctoral pro-
grammes
Structured doctoral programmes are a bit
different and involve a team of supervisors
looking after the doctoral students. They are
similar to the PhD programmes in English-
speaking countries:
they feature a curriculum within which
you work towards your PhD
many are interdisciplinary in orientation
they often provide training in soft skills
and additional qualifications.
A doctorate in three to four years
Because doctoral students receive very sys-
tematic and intensive support in structured
programmes, they are generally able to ob-
tain their doctoral degrees in three to four
years. More information about structured
doctoral programmes and help with finding
the right programme for you can be found in
our website section entitled “Info for PhD Stu-
dents”. http://www.research-in-germany.org/
