African Export-Import Bank to invest US$500 million in Mozambique On Feb. 11, Maputo hosted a business forum of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank). Afreximbank is a pan-African financial institution established in 1993 and which currently has 125 members, institutions and countries, including Mozambique. "This organism intends to promote expansion, diversification and trade development at the continental level. The idea is to promote African trade for Africa and outside Africa, especially for Asian countries", said Gift Simwaka, the bank’s regional director. The event aimed at disseminating knowledge of the main financial products available to ministries, the financial system, the private sector and the Confederation of Economic Associations (CTA), among other actors. Those present also discussed the "Promotion of Economic Development and diversification through trade". In this context, Afreximbank, which features a new fund of US$3.5 billion, ensured a greater inclusion of Mozambique in this package and announced its intention to boost national exports. It announced that it will spend US$500 million on financing investment projects in the agriculture, tourism and energy sectors. Both national public institutions and private companies are eligible for funding. "If the project requires more than the amount on offer, we will create a union involving several international banks, which together can finance large projects. We have done this in 20 countries with projects worth up to US$2 billion", Simwaka said. Since 1993, Mozambique has only received funding for four national companies, totaling US$90 million, while countries such as Zimbabwe have managed through this fund more than US$200 million in just one year. The government has announced that the economic growth target this year, set at 7 percent, will not be compromised by the severe drought in the south and center and the heavy rains in the north of the country. Speaking on Feb. 12 during the closing of the Planning Meeting 2015 between the government and the Group of Programmatic Support’s Partners (PAP) to the State Budget, Minister of Economy and Finance, Adriano Maleiane, announced that "floods and the drought are above the initial forecasts we had when drawing up the economic and social plan and will have a significant impact on agricultural production and livestock, but we believe it will not affect the economic growth forecasts for this year".

This meeting aimed to assess the government's planning instruments, notably the Economic and Social Plan, the State Budget and the definition of performance goals of the executive and the partners for the period 2016-2018. Portuguese Ambassador José Duarte, the chairman of the troika, said the last four months have been marked by changes in macroeconomic scenarios and reaffirmed "the commitment of the partners to continue to ensure predictability in the disbursement of funds pledged to the Mozambican government, which this year will reach US$305 million".

The CTA has announced that in partnership with the Community of Portuguese Language Countries’ Union of Exporters (EU-CPLP) and the CPLP Business Council, the government of East Timor is organizing the First Global Economic Forum to be held on Feb. 25-27 in Dili, East Timor. The event is of great interest and strategic significance, not only to assess the potential of investment and the business partnerships opportunities in East Timor but also to establish contacts and promote business with companies from the

Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Pacific, East Timor being a platform for these regions. In this context, the CTA invites entrepreneurs interested in attending the event to submit an application using the contact details below:

The CTA has announced that the Center for Public Integrity (CIP) invites those interested to participate in the launch of the report of the Business Integrity Country Assessments (BICA), which will take place on Feb. 18 at Hotel Radisson Blu in Maputo from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The BICA is an initiative that aims to contribute to a better business environment in the country, with a focus on corporate integrity.

Poetry of Mbate Pedro wins BCI Prize for Literature 2015

With the work "Debaixo do silêncio que arde", published in 2015, Mbate Pedro won the sixth edition of the BCI Prize for Literature. The announcement was made on Feb. 11 in the BCI’s Media Library by the president of the jury, Jorge Oliveira. According to Oliveira, the fact that the work combined "the main elements of artistic writing, such as commitment to literary tradition, the work of language and the artist's creativity and imagination" was decisive for the jury's decision. Oliveira added: "Debaixo do silêncio que arde" is also a book that enshrines the dreamer who over the past few years has not stopped fading and thus does not cease to be a tribute to those who find in poetry the best of universal art. The prize given to this work was a way we deem beneficial to reward the

work, artist and genre."After receiving the check of 200,000 meticais, delivered by the BCI’s Chief Executive Officer Paulo Sousa, Mbate Peter, who is a medical doctor and, in his own words, a "writer on Sundays and holidays," said he had come to the conclusion that "with great respect for the BCI, the highest award that literature can give us is the existence of readers and the enrichment that they give to the work of the author. I write to heal my own wounds so I have decided that half of the monetary value of the prize -- 100 000 meticais -- will go to two organizations that really have made the promotion of reading and of the book: the literary movement ‘Kuphaluxa de Maputo’ and the club of writers based in Niassa, the ‘Clube dos Escritores, Poetas e Amigos do Niassa’."

The CTA has announced that through the Lisboa Feiras Congressos e Eventos and the Instituto para a Promoção de Exportações (Institute for Export Promotion - IPEX), the AIP Foundation (Associação Industrial Portuguesa) will organize the "Expoconstrução Tektónica Moçambique" on March 9-13, in the FACIM park in Marracuene, Maputo province. This is the largest fair of Mozambique on construction, real estate, energy, environment, safety and decoration. The construction sector is a major driver of the development of the Mozambican economy, with investments in infrastructure,

transport, water distribution networks, mining, energy and communications, residential and commercial real estate, offices, tourism and catering. The "Expoconstrução Tektónica Moçambique" is the privileged place for official entities, companies, engineers, architects, designers and financial institutions to meet the best businesses and projects for the country.
