Greetings from Ghana Welcome to our quarterly Field Ready newsletter for November 2019.

This year has been an amazing one for us at Field Ready, especially in Ghana. In June, our Cohort 2 students completed their programme and were all commissioned as ‘Field Ready’ at a beautiful and moving ceremony held at the Takoradi Technical University.

Our third cohort of students started the programme in September after a rigorous selection process led by Technical Commissioners. We are pleased to announce that out of the 24 selected students, we have almost half female participation on the program. This year has also seen us diversify our Alliance companies to involve not only oil and gas, but mining, agro business, the beverage industry, automotive and IT industries.

Our Field Ready programme has also been recognized by the Petroleum Commission this year, with their

commitment to include all Field Ready candidates on the Petroleum Commission approved list of employees ready for employment. This is indeed significant as we continue to work towards the National Goal, as per the Petroleum Local Content and Local Participation Regulations 2013, (L.I 2204). With such progress, and partnership from the Petroleum Commission and the National Service Secretariat we continue to pledge our ongoing support to the development of employable young people in Ghana.

Thanks to each and everyone of our students, partners and the team at the Takoradi Technical University, without their support we couldn’t have reached all of these achievements. We look forward to more success in the coming years.

And finally, I was lucky enough to meet face to face with my colleagues from Mozambique and Nigeria at the recent Getenergy Global event in the UK. It was great to hear about their work and how, collectively, we are changing the story of employability across Africa.

MOZAMBIQUE COHORT 1

COHORT 1 COMMISSIONING CEREMONYCongratulations to our students, faculty and institutes in Mozambique

After 8 months of technical training, applied personal skills and practical field experience, 20 students from across Mozambique sat down with their Technical Commissioners for a final interview. Each student had previously submitted a final portfolio of evidence covering their 8 months training, including faculty reports, exam results, completed log books and their own personal statements.

Technical Commissioners from HCB, Sasol, Kenmare Resouces, Total

(formerly Anadarko) and Port of Maputo interviewed each student to

determine if they were now “Field Ready”.

We were delighted that so many of the Technical Commissioners were then able to attend the graduation ceremonies in Maputo on 7th October 2019 and in Nampula on 9th October 2019. The graduations were attended by more than 40 organisations – including all Field Ready Alliance companies and guests such as Toyota, Vale, CDN, Midal Cables, Applus, Schlumberger, Portos do Norte, Bakhresa, Nova Texmoque, AMB Veritas, Central Térmica de Ressano Garcia (CTRG), Intertek, Motorcare and Cimentos de Moçambique.

Arlindo Brazao Lead Instructor, Nampula Industrial and Commercial Institute, Mozambique

What made you study engineering? Since childhood, I have always been interested in industrial electricity.

What challenges do you think young students in Mozambique face today? How can these be overcome? The challenges facing young people in Mozambique are:

A lack of interest in studying. They do not have a vision of what they want to be in the future; they do not prepare the subject before taking exams and are not bothered if they receive negative results.

To overcome these challenges, training centres and schools should start giving career guidance and applied personal skills (APS) classes – such as the Field Ready programme

What do you enjoy about your role as an instructor at the Institute? In my role as an instructor I feel proud because I am contributing to the development of students in Mozambican society and especially in the vocational training sector, where I am helping train professional technicians for the industrial sectors.

What advice do you have for future Field Ready students who wish to join the programme? For future students of the programme I would advise them to be humble, responsible, always be ready to learn something new and be committed to the Field Ready programme.

What do you wish you’d known before you started your career? I wish I had received more technical knowledge in my professional area - especially focusing on HES.

What do you like to do outside of work? I spend the day with my family, help my children with their schoolwork and play soccer with friends over the weekend.

TULLOW ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAMME Following the launch of Cohort 3 at TTU, Field Ready welcomed representatives from Tullow Oil who visited our new students as they embarked on their Field Ready experience. The visit - which happened during the third week of September - coincided with the initial week of Applied Personal Skills training for Cohort 3 and students were able to meet with and talk to the Tullow representatives as part of their industry exposure programme.

Field Ready also met with Tullow to discuss the new entrepreneurship programme that we are developing with them and that will form a key part of the personal skills learning later in the programme. We look forward to cementing our partnership with Tullow over the coming months and creating more opportunities for our Ghanaian students to learn from them and from our other Alliance partners.

FIELD READY GHANA ALLIANCE UPDATE

Our Instructor Support Consultant in Ghana, Jide Abayomi, continues to work closely with the staff and instructors at TTU to ensure the new crop of students are fully up to speed with HSE and enjoy a great start to their Field Ready experience. GRADUATE STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Ana Jessica Cajingue Recently graduated from Nampula Industrial and Commercial Institute, Mozambique

“The Field Ready programme is changing the way we

interpret education. It is more than a programme, it is

an opportunity for the world.”

How has the Field Ready programme benefitted your career? The Field Ready programme benefitted my career by bringing me closer to my dream, which is working in a field environment. Before the programme I felt that there was a big gap between the field and myself to an extent where I believed that it would take years of experience in some other technical area to achieve my goal. Field Ready also expanded my network and personal skills which has given me more opportunities, greater access to information and the tools to develop in my career.

What challenges do you think female engineers face in industry? How can these be overcome?Female engineers face many challenges in the industry such as gender stereotypes and staying in the industry. Women’s voices can be ignored during discussions, or

their views are not taken seriously. Most of the time they have to work harder to prove themselves and they are often seen as “assistants” and not given much hands-on work.

These challenges can be overcome by creating an inclusive work environment where women feel equal to their male peers allowing them to have opportunities for advancement and the same responsibilities. Another solution is to ensure good work life balance where they are able to sustain an enjoyable life outside of work.

What advice would you give to future applicants of the Field Ready programme? My advice for future applicants of the Field Ready programme would be to always be open to the possibilities that the programme offers and to always try their best at everything.

How would you encourage young women to enter a male-dominated career?Encouraging young women to enter a male-dominated career is a very difficult task for many reasons. Working in math and physics isn’t a very common career path for women. My best weapon would be to share the stories about successful women in engineering who are working in the industry. It is essential to showcase women’s contribution in STEM.

What are you looking forward to as you graduate from the Field Ready programme and take your first steps into employment?I´m looking forward to applying the skills and knowledge I’ve gained from the programme, help bring more safety awareness, have exposure to process and control systems in the field and to grow and develop in the area. I also look forward to contributing to the development of the Field Ready programme so that more young people, especially women, like myself can have the same opportunity and maybe who knows be a Technical Commissioner someday!

GRADUATE STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Arlete Mujacarama Matola Industrial and Commercial Institute, Mozambique

“In my life I have always believed that education is

the most powerful weapon that we can use to change

the world. We start in our minds, and then we shoot

to the world.”

Why did you decide to study engineering? When I graduated from high school, I wanted to enter vocational technical education because I was always fascinated by the practical field. My father was a source of inspiration, but I kept thinking I would be one of only a few women to embrace engineering. However, I have never felt less able because I am woman, so I often say that engineering chose me, and I embraced her!

What challenges do you think female engineers face in industry? How can these be overcome? One of the biggest challenges we face is discrimination against being a woman. Many people think that because we are women, we are therefore fragile, and there is contempt for not being able to carry out certain activities.

Who has inspired you and why? When I started in engineering, my father gave me a lot of strength, but after I started learning, I met some other women who also studied in industry. One of them is Esperança Mangaze (CEO and founder of Folha Verde) whose determination and strength inspired me.

What advice would you give to future applicants of the Field Ready programme? First of all, I wish all the new Field Ready students the best of luck, I advise you to do your best, follow the instructions and have a lot of strength to hold on to this opportunity.

How would you encourage young women to enter a male-dominated career? For young women who want to get into the industry I would say believe in yourself and your potential as you are capable of anything if you keep a positive mindset. Challenges will always exist; the important thing is knowing how to deal with them.

What are you looking forward to as you graduate from the Field Ready programme and take your first steps into employment?I want to apply all the knowledge I’ve gained in Field Ready not only from the technical area, but also in the personal skills area, showcasing what makes me different me from others so that I have the opportunity to enter professional industry.

Enoch Parry was commissioned as Field Ready as part our first ever programme, which launched in Ghana in 2016. After spending 6 months on his field placement with Eni, he went on to complete his BOSIET and is now employed as an Instrument Technician for Yinson.

What are you up to at the moment?Presently I am on board the FPSO JAK offshore Ghana as an Instrument Technician. I am responsible for maintenance, repairs and calibration of all instruments and any other jobs specified by the SEIT (Senior Electrical and Instrument Technician) or OIM (Offshore Installation Manager).

Can you describe your typical work day?My day typically starts at 7am. First we attend a tool box talk with SEIT describing the tasks for the day, then I make sure all permits are printed and registered. At 8am I start the daily activities and this could be instruments maintenance, repairs, or calibrations. The work day finishes at around 7pm.

How would you describe your industry in 3 words?Demanding. Challenging. Rewarding.

What do you enjoy most about your role? The troubleshooting aspect interest me the most - that feeling of being able to solve problems is very fulfilling.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?I would like to branch off to the programming, so working on computers building logic patterns for customers.

What are some of the challenges you face in your role? The role has got ups and downs for everyone but I think the top of the list is missing family and the various events at home. Also for young guys such as myself, holding down a relationship is hard.

What do you like to do outside of work? When still offshore, most times I am in the cabin catching up with events back home or reading some instrument manuals.

How can Field Ready help someone wishing to join your industry?Field Ready gives students an overview of the industry; the technical basics of the roles they wish to have and exposes them to high profile industry players so they can build relationships and networks for their future career path.

What advice do you have for future Field Ready students?Work hard and be nice to people! Networking is key.
