9th September 2016 - Issue 1
Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome to the first newsletter of the Autumn
term and also of the new academic year.
There is only one word that I can think of to
describe the past week.
FANTASTIC!
On Tuesday we welcomed Years 7 and 11.
The first day for new students in Year 7 is
always daunting, however, at the end of the
day it was such an enormous pleasure to see
so many of our Year 7 students smiling from
ear to ear because they had enjoyed their first
day and were eager to come back for more.
On Wednesday we welcomed back the
remaining year groups and it has been an
absolute pleasure this week to be part of our
learning community. I know that I speak on
behalf of every single member of staff when I
say that this week has been truly amazing.
Even though this has been a short week,
much has already been accomplished. We
had assemblies for all year groups and some
departments have now moved to different
locations around the site in preparation for
work to begin on our new school build.
I would also like to welcome some new
colleagues joining us, Jamie Phillimore,
Teacher of PE, Steve Freeman as a Cover
Supervisor, Vicky Sanders as an LSA for
Hearing Impaired and Sue Myall as a
Behaviour Support Assistant within our SEN
Department.
Homework will be improving this year both in
terms of frequency and quality. Next week
‘Show My Homework’ will be launched. This is
an electronic programme to set, mark and
monitor homework. You will be receiving
details shortly of how to log-on to the platform.
Behaviour for learning this week has also
been truly amazing and the vast majority of
our students look incredibly smart in their
uniform. We will be working closely with a
small number of students next week to give
them the opportunity to fully comply with our
well known and frequently communicated
standards of appearance.
Just a couple of reminders. Firstly, our main
school reception has now moved and is no
longer located in the main school block. Our
main school reception is now located
adjacent to the bus loop. Secondly, as I am
sure you are now aware, Carisbrooke College
is a mobile free site. This also includes iPods
and MP3 players. If you need to get a
message to your son/daughter urgently then
please contact the main school reception in
the first instance on 524651.
Finally, whatever the weather have a brilliant
weekend.

Upcoming CATs tests for year 7 students.
CATs tests will be undertaken by all year 7 students next week. Most secondary
schools use these Cognitive Abilities Tests (CATs) to signpost a child’s preferred
ways of learning . CATs are designed to assess a student’s ability in three different
areas: verbal (thinking with words); quantitative (thinking with numbers); and non-
verbal (thinking with shapes and space). Teachers use CATs scores to help them
understand how a child learns best so that they can adapt their teaching and
enhance a child’s learning.
There is no preparation needed for CATs. The tests are designed to be taken without
any revision or preparation so we can assess a child’s potential in his or her ability to
reason. CATs are not testing children's knowledge and understanding as a Maths or
English exam might, so they can't ‘learn’ how to answer the questions.
Students will be escorted to a computer room by their tutor during morning
registration on the day of their test.
