Dear Ray:

I n response t o your appeal t o the membership t o c o n t r i b u t e something, f i r s t l y I want t o adve r t i se t h e f a c t t h a t I am a l i v e and w e l l and l i v i n g i n A u s t r a l i a ' s answer t o Hawaii. While the boom has passed (again! ) and the resources are s t i l l l a r g e l y awa i t i ng discovery, a l l i s n o t gloom and doom, no! As a r e s u l t o f a l i t t l e e x t r a t ime on my hands, my go l f score i s down t o my age ( f o r 9 holes t h a t i s ) and my beer consumption i s about the same number, (13 oz. b o t t l e s pe r week). No anomalies there, no mat te r how you rearrange the data.

On a more ser ious note, the shortsightedness o f some of the l o c a l companies here astounds me. Sure, t h e r e ' s a g l u t o f some commodities, no demand f o r o thers a t a l l , b u t w ip ing o u t whole e x p l o r a t i o n arms i s s u r e l y no t , i n the l ong term, an economy.

One company I have heard about, (no names, no pack d r i l l ) has several m i l l i o n do1 l a r s wor th of data i n t h e i r f i l e s and have sacked EVERYBODY. When they want t o s t a r t up again i n two o r three years t ime, there w i 11 be no c o n t i n u i t y , no one w i l l know where anyth ing b u t the co f fee j u g i s , and t h e y ' l l have t o s t a r t f rom scra tch . Perhaps t h i s i s why o l d consul tants never d ie , they j u s t go on bo r i ng . Perhaps we he lp preserve a 1 i t t l e con- t i n u i t y (and s a n i t y ? ) s imp ly because data j u s t n a t u r a l l y seem t o f a l l o f f t r ucks and w a i t f o r an opportune t ime t o be revealed. Everybody knows a look i s as good as a photocopy t o a b l i n d geochemist, t o paraphrase a h i t h e r t o good aphorism.

I sometimes wonder i f the employees shou ldn ' t be g iven the o p t i o n of work ing f o r reduced s a l a r i e s , running the shebang themselves j u s t t o s t a y a l i v e , r a t h e r than t o make p r o f i t s and dividends, u n t i l such t ime as the re i s a more b u l l i s h market. Bu t then, i f you add j u s t one l e t t e r t o " b u l l i s h " , what have you g o t ?

I hope t h i s 1 ightens your day. I ' m going f o r a d i p i n my 42 foo t pool .
