Dear Arcadia Community,
I want to thank all the residents of the Arcadia School District.
After 34 years in public education in Wisconsin and 19 years in the
Arcadia School District, I am retiring from public education. It was
a privilege and honor every day for the past 19 years to say that I
“get” to be the Arcadia High School principal or the Arcadia School
District superintendent. I also want to thank the many parents and
community members who served unselfishly on numerous
committees during my tenure.
The number of talented and committed people I have had the
honor to work alongside are too numerous to mention individually.
I do want all the employees to know that every one of their jobs
was essential to running our school. I truly appreciate the
commitment and dedication they all have to our students on a
daily basis.
I am making this announcement early in the year so the board
will have ample time to find a suitable replacement. I wish nothing
but the best for the Arcadia School District going forward.
Sincerely yours,
Louie Ferguson
Superintendent

Dear Elementary Parents:
It is getting to be that time of year again when we in the Physical Education Department begin to think of Jump Rope for
Heart. We are starting to prepare the activities, organize equipment and just plain brainstorm about how to make it better
each year. This year it will be held on Friday, February 16, 2018.
With that said, we would like you to consider being a part of this exciting day. You would be helping us tremendously
and at the same time your son//daughter would love for you to be a part of this fun filled day. Please check your schedule
to see if you would be available to help us. We would be happy to have parents, guardians, aunts, uncles, and grandpar-
ents that would like to help. In the past our volunteers have turned ropes, timed activities, supervised stations, etc. We will
schedule you during the time of your sons/daughters jumping time and you can enjoy the hour with them. If you are avail-
able for more than an hour we would greatly appreciate your help for a longer time.
Contact Jen Gray or Colleen Sobotta if you are interested or available to help. We would love to have you and we
know the kids would too.
More information will become available as we continue to prepare. If you choose to be a part of this event, please
email us at the address below or call and leave a message.
** For our convenience in planning, it would be beneficial if you would be able to contact us as soon as you know if it
will work with your schedule. Since we assign volunteers to specific jobs, we would appreciate a response before February
9th.
Thank you in advance for your consideration,

febrero.
Gracias de antemano por su consideración,

Dorian Honors Vocal Festival west. There are several rehearsals where Luther College
Professors and a Guest Conductor work with the students,
and then there is a Grand Concert on Monday evening. It
was an amazing experience for all, and great memories
were made. Congratulations to these 7 AHS students.
The Labels for Education Program has ended. In the past few years participation in the program has declined and as
a result, Campbell came to the very difficult decision to wind down the Labels for Education Program. They no longer will
take UPCs from schools or other organizations for redemption for items. Because of this, please do not send labels and
UPCs from products to school with your children. We worked hard to get all UPCs sent in by the last deadline of January
2nd and we will redeem the points for items for all three school libraries. THANK YOU for participating in the program in
the past!

Bernal, Jesse Jayren, Madison Marsolek, Esmeralda
Mendoza, Emily Rath, Kira Vazquez,
Hollie Wagner and Bryce Well), AMS
Drama students (Caleb Glenzinski,
Montgomery Hadley, Carson Halverson,
and Cruz Patzner) and Masquer members
(Samatha Camacho, Rossellin Gaitan,
Oliva Mooney, Megan Steinlicht, Felix

Ronald McDonald - Arts of Young America
sponsored show The Nutcracker Ballet at
Viterbo University on 12/8/17. Peter
Tchaikovsky classical music set the tone
to this annual holiday classic performed by
the La Crosse Dance Centre. Mrs.
Schock's students were delighted with this
ballet rich in color and spectacle of the
holiday season; and they were awesome
audience members displaying proper
theatre etiquette.
Arcadia MS Drama Class presented Crazytown by Jo-
hathan Rand on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.
in the AHS Auditorium.
Crazytown was a fun filled comedy that takes a tour of
the most messed up town in America. From a police inter-
rogation room where the nicest guy in town is issued a
strange ultimatum, to the elementary school for a heated
political debate on critical issues like tater tots; welcome to
Crazytown, where our motto is: Wel-
come to Crazytown.
The three main scenes: “No
More Mister Nice Guy,” “The Future
Is In Your Tiny Hands,” and “May The
Best Fan Win” were connected with
news anchors Jim Pickles (Dakotah
Jordan) and Bill Buttlebee (Caleb
Glenzinski) from WOMG Action
News.
In the first scene we met Sheldon
Grimes (Cruz Patzner), the nicest
guy in town. Unfortunately for Shel-
don, in this town, being a nice guy is
prohibited by law. But after a crash
course from a pair of local police de-
tectives Mills (Carson Halverson)
and Kimball (Andree Gonzalez-
Lawrence) and a very special spe-
cialist Ricky (Ricky Johnston), Shel-
don might just learn to be a jerk fast
Fantastic Drama Field Trip
enough to stay out of prison.
In the next scene, Kaitlyn Parker (Monty Hadley) and
Virgil Grantwood squared off for the political debate of the
century: student president of their elementary school with
moderator Seymour Michaels (Carson Martin). No topic is
off-limits, be it cootie prevention, kickball roster justice, or --
most critically of all -- tater tots. Presented in a town hall
format, all the hard-hitting questions come from fellow stu-
dents in the audience. Who would
win? America’s very freedom hangs in
the balance. Or at least a decision as
to whether Santa is real.
And in the last scene welcome to the
thrilling world of dudes in sports. Fi-
nally, the match-up the entire nation
has been waiting for: the historic
showdown between veteran slacker
Donald Baxter and rookie sensation
slacker Michael Felton. Legendary
sportscaster Tim Bixby was there to
handle the exhilarating action.
The drama students not only acted on
stage, but were in charge of all back
stage production work as well. Direc-
tor Mrs. Schock would like to thank the
students for their work and expressive
talents. One could certainly see the
students’ abilities blossom on stage.

AHS Drama Stage Children’s Theatre show -
Bedtime Stories (As Told By Our Dad) (Who Messed Them Up)
The AHS Drama Class proudly presented Ed Monk’s
children’s tale Bedtime Stories (As Told By Our Dad) (Who
Messed Them Up) on Monday, January 15, 2018 to Arca-
dia Elementary School and Holy Family Catholic School
grades 2nd through 4th at the Arcadia High School Audito-
rium, which lasted about 45 minutes. Relatives of the cast
were welcomed to attend as well.
Dad (Jayren Jesse) has to tell three stories to his three
children before they will go to bed, but let’s say dad doesn’t
always get the stories right. He takes a turn to tell his three
rambunctious kids Katie (Jazlynn Salgado), Wally (Carlos
Mora), and Ashley (Hollie Wagner) their bedtime stories,
but when he gets fuzzy on the details, the classics get crea-
tive. You may think you know your fairy tales, but not the
way Dad tells them.
In the first story: Prince Reginald, with a snoring prob-
lems, spices up “The Princess and The Pea” as he set out
to find a wife because his mother the Queen (Kira
Vazquez) says so. He ends up falling in love with Mindy the
maid (Esmeralda Mendoza), but who knows if they will end
up happily ever after, let alone being married.
“The Boy Who Cried Wolf” or should I say “The Boy
Who Cried Dinosaur” was our second story. Wilbur (Emily
Rath) did his best to protect the sheep (including Breanna
Bernal) from Horace the dinosaur (Madison Mar-
solek). Wilbur’s Mother and Father (Lizzandro Aguilar
Vasquez) can’t believe what’s going on and neither can the
Mayor (Jarumi Bautista).
And in the last story, a favorite of Ashley’s, was Rum-
pelstiltskin. Now Rumpelstiltskin (Bryce Wells) is enlisted
to help turn all of the Prince’s pesky gold into straw. I know,
I know, it’s really straw into gold, but not this time.
The cast doubled as the crew, helping with make-up,
costumes, set construction, lights, and sound. Drama Di-
rector Mrs. Schock thanks all who let her students shine
with their Bedtime Stories (As Told By Our Dad) (Who
Messed Them Up) production.
attractive flight attendant and the couple employed as
housekeeper and handyman. That night, the housekeeper
disappears during a violent thunderstorm and her husband
drops dead after ingesting candy that any of them could
have sampled. Laughs and chills abound until the startling
truth emerges and the tension mounts.
Director Mrs. Lisa S. Schock will head up the acting
ensemble that will also double as the production work crew
from props, to costumes, to publicity, to scenery and
everything else in between. At the time of publication, the
cast has not been filled for this zany and
suspenseful murder mystery comedy with a twist at the
end. Thank you Arcadia for your fine arts support and we
can’t wait to see you March 23 & 24, 2018 starting at 7:30
p.m. with You Could DIE Laughing!

Using Technology to Enhance Student Learning Fourth grade students have been using technology to
enhance their learning during Science units. While learning
about Energy and Motion students used their chromebooks
to interact with a roller coaster simulator. They applied what
they had learned from the simulator and built their own roller
coaster in the classroom. Students then had the opportunity
to demonstrate their understanding of the essential learning
objective by creating an individualized project using their
choice of technology me-
dium, such as Google
Slides, Google Docs, or
Kahoot.

ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Confront, Evacuate. Our entire staff has been trained how to han-
dle the threat of an aggressive intruder or active shooting event. Students in grades 5-12 have also dis-
cussed this with teachers Below are some Frequently Asked Questions about ALICE Please use this as a
guide for how you may respond to questions that your child may have about the ALICE training that they have
received. If you have further questions, please find contact information at the end of this document.
1. How will the police act in an ALICE situation?
They will follow police protocol for handling the intruder when they are informed of an active intruder.
2. Can I call my parents once I get to safety?
Yes, please call your parents once you get to a safe place. You can also call 911 to let them know where you
are.
3. Can we throw things if there is an intruder in our classroom?
Your teacher might choose to throw things from the classroom at the intruder if they enter the classroom. You
should be following the directions of your teacher (or adult in the room) which could include being prepared to
distract the intruder, being prepared to evacuate the room, or moving furniture around to create a barricade.
4. Can we break a window to get out?
Your teacher might choose to use the window as a way to evacuate if the door is not an option. You should be
following the directions of your teacher or adult in the room. They will know how to evacuate through the win-
dow, but they may ask you to help. Carefully clear away glass before going out the window, and then RUN to
safety.
5. How will I reunite with my family?
The police or law enforcement will identify a place for you to be reunited with your family. The information about
where to reunite with your family will be sent out at that time in many ways, including a mass message from
school, social media posts, school messenger system, and officer’s squad cars. The school will be working to-
gether with law enforcement to decide where parents can pick up students, and how to send out this informa-
tion. Parents, for everyone’s safety, please only go to the places designated by law enforcement at that time.
6. Do substitutes know what to do?
Substitutes will information in their sub folders regarding ALICE, but they may need reminders from students
about the closest exit or available materials in the room.
7. Are we allowed to evacuate without a teacher?
If there is no teacher around you, and you can safely evacuate, you can do so. Remember to run to the closest
exit and do not return to the building. Keep running until you reach a safe place or are with a safe adult.
8. What if someone has an injury or other reason why they cannot evacuate? If someone is unable to
evacuate, locking the classroom and barricading the door is a great option. If you can help the person to evacu-
ate, you can do that as well.
9. What if there is no PA Announcement of the intruder? There may not be an announcement, or you may
not be able to hear it for some reason. There may be other things that you hear that alert you or your teacher to
begin to implement ALICE. Your teacher has been trained in what to listen for.
10. Will we be able to come back and get our stuff from school? The police will let the school district know
when it is safe to return to the building. It may not be until the following day or even a few days. Do not re-enter
the school until you have been alerted that it is safe.
11. Does it matter if the intruder hears the announcement? It does not matter if the intruder hears the an-
nouncement. They will still have no idea what everyone will do. The National ALICE Training organization tells
us that it is distracting to the intruder to be hearing all of the announcements, and that is a good thing.
ALICE—Frequently Asked Questions.
12
12. How do we lock the door? All doors are locked during the school day when students are in the classroom.
Your teacher may also choose to use classroom items to secure the door closed.
13. Can we run to our house? Yes, you can run to your house as long as it is in the direction you are evacuat-
ing. Remember to always run AWAY from the sound of the threat. Contact your parents and/or the police to let
them know where you are.
14. What if there is more than one intruder? The same ALICE options apply, but rarely is there more than
one intruder.
15. What will the office staff do? The office staff will also implement ALICE. They will use any of their options,
which could include lockdown, barricading or evacuating the office.
16. What if the intruder comes during a passing period or at the beginning or end of the day? If the in-
truder comes into the school during a time when students are moving around the school, whether at arrival/
dismissal or during a passing period, the same ALICE options apply. If you can, run into a classroom and lock-
down and barricade. If you can run out a nearby exit, you can do that too.
17. What if the intruder is a student and knows about the ALICE Procedure? Even if the intruder knew that
we follow ALICE, they still will not know how everyone will react. The way the protocol is designed, staff (and
students) will be making split-second decisions as to which option they feel is the best to implement based on
the information provided.
18. If a student falls while running and gets hurt, should we help them or keep running? Certainly see if
you and maybe another student or the staff can quickly help them, then continue to run to a safe location. If the
other student was unable to run with you, then once you reach safety, alert a first responder (911) of where the
hurt student is so that they can go help the student.
19. What if we end up in the hallway and all the classroom doors are locked? Evacuation is a very good
option. Find the closest exit and run from the building as soon and as quickly as possible. Run until you can no
longer see the building. When you reach safety, flag down a first responder, or call 911 or your parents to let
them know where you are.
20. Some of the classroom doors open out - how will a barricade help? Barricading puts things between
you and the intruder. The barricade can also work on ways to hold the door shut or prevent it from opening.
21. Why can’t we evacuate with our cars? In a time of panic, it might seem like a good idea to leave in a car.
It is not appropriate to leave in a vehicle as emergency personnel and other supporting agencies will quickly be
arriving on the scene.
22. How do police officers know when I am running that I am not the intruder? Students have been in-
structed to leave the building with hands in the air so that police know that they are not the intruder.
23. What if I am outside with my class and the intruder is in the building? Do not go back into the building.
Follow your teacher’s directions which will likely include running away from the threat until you get to safety.
24. What if there is a shooter or person with a weapon on the playground? The staff and students should
move away from danger. This may mean re-entering the school or running farther away to get out of view.

A.L.I.C.E. significa Alerta, Bloquear y Proteger, Informar, Confrontar y Evacuar.

13. ¿Podemos correr a nuestra casa?
Si el in-
