Hi Midlands hope life is treating you all just swimmingly!
The Majors have had a bit of a hectic caravanning time lately
with a mini tour to Convention SA 2017 in Vereeniging on
Thursday back on Monday and off to River Valley in
Pennington on Friday.
Sadly I was informed that Lesley Rayson lost her battle to
cancer, may she rest in peace and our thoughts go out to her
family. Stephan Spieker, our Provincial Councillor, was
admitted to hospital in the Pretoria area and was immediately put in ICU so that his
sugars could be stabilised, sadly he had to have his leg amputated below the knee on
Saturday morning – we wish him a speedy recovery and hope he is back to
caravanning soon. I will stand in for him as Alternate Provincial Councillor until he is
ready to resume his duties.
Congratulations to Rhoda on completing the Witness Maritzburg half
marathon and Bill and Sheila Pellew on completing the 10km walk,
Sheila finishing 3rd in the ladies category.
Our last rally was held at River Valley Resort over the weekend of 10th
– 12th March and Mike, the owner of the park, again went out of his way
to look after us, the weather was great and we had a
turnout of 19 families comprising 17 from Midlands
and two visiting families, Terry & Wendy Wattrus
and the Barends family - Lloyd, Jontal and children. Hopefully we
will see them again soon. The marshals did a splendid job,
entertaining us with “frog races” on the Saturday afternoon. At
friendlies we awarded River Valley our trophy for “Midlands Venue
of the Year”, see rally report elsewhere. River Valley has also
offered all CCSA members a 50% discount on park fees out of
season and you need to present your valid CCSA membership card
3
in order to qualify. Please visit www.caravanclubsa.org.za and you will find on the
home page “Caravan Park Special Rates for CCSA Members” with some links to other
parks that offer us discounts.
There was healthy discussion held at Convention SA 2017 and many items came out of
the group discussions regarding membership. National Council are busy compiling a
summary of these items and once it’s available, I will share with you. The main item
that directly affects us members is that as per the Constitution the annual subs have
been increased by 10% for the ensuing year which now amount to R360 pa.
As I mentioned last month, Pedal car rally is coming up so please give your names to
Sally or Neil Campbell if you are interested in riding, I last heard that he was still
looking for lady riders. I have included an intention slip for the rally and intentions are
to be in by 1 May 2017. Midlands won the trophy for the most vans at the rally last
time so let’s do it again as well as win the endurance shield outright.
At the Provincial meeting held on the 25th March, it was decided that from 2018 that
instead of having Pedal Car Rally and Rally Natal in the same year, we would have
Rally SA in 2018, Rally Natal the next year and Pedal Car the following year.
Thereafter the cycle would start again.
AGM is also not far off so please give some thought as to whom you would like to
have on your committee, four committee members have come to the end of their
tenure, so please step up to the plate and make yourself available to carry Midlands
forward.
Our next rally will be held at Scottburgh over the weekend of 21st – 23
rd April, bring
your bicycles – see elsewhere for details.
This thought to ponder relates very much to the CCSA
“Being a family means you are a part of something very wonderful.
It means you will love and be loved for the rest of your life”

“”– Michael
Cheers for now, safe towing and God willing I’ll see you at Scottburgh

We arrived at River Valley around midday on Friday to find a few members ahead of us. Without our usual parking Marshall, Des, members sorted themselves out very well and by the time all 19 families had settled in, we were quite crowded. Bill and Sheila arrived before dark with the largest pot of Breyani I have ever seen. Still too hot to carry! The gazebos were set up along
the concrete strip and preparations made for the evening celebrations. Bill & Sheila were celebrating their 100th National from last year. After pay parade we all lined up for the Breyani which was superb. When all had eaten their fill, the pot was still about half full. Those with containers were happy to take extras away for later enjoyment. Saturday weather was great and after enjoying a quiet morning, the Main Event was prepared and the track readied for the introduction of the Imported Racing Frogs. Tickets were available for punters to select their favourite jockeys and the racing began. Much hilarity from the spectators and frustration from jockeys as the frogs ignored their ‘controllers’ demands. After seven exciting and fun races, the six winning jockeys, one had won two races, competed for the title of Champion, with a slight twist in the final straight. A word of advice. DO NOT take any bets against the FAMILY KOTZE. Between Dave, Darryl and Teagan, they walked off with the three top places and Trish was the most successful punter of the day. A good time being had by all! Fires were lit at sundown and the expected display of superb salads was revealed, followed by some damn fine puddings. Those that could, stayed up a while but many retired full and contented to their vans. Again Sunday arrived with the quality weather we were hoping for and soon after
11
10 am friendlies we packed up and returned home to await the next rally. See you at Scotties. Mike & Karen.

Greetings to all Midlands members. We learnt with great sadness that Lesley Rayson passed away on the 6th March 2017. Lesley was so brave and fought her illness for a couple of years. Our deepest condolences are with Lesley’s family. Unfortunately some of our members are experiencing poor health. Wally Bennett gave Glenda a big fright, collapsing at home. He went to the Doctor, had an angiogram and found his heart was in a bad condition. Wally had a triple bypass on the 6th March 2017. He is now home and Sister Glenda is taking very good care of her man. She also said that he is very positive and doing exceptionally well. On the 16th March 2017, Johnny Engelbrecht underwent an operation, a knee replacement to his right knee. The operation was a great success and Johnny is doing very well. Dereck had a chat to Johnny at the time of my report. He said that the back pain he had been suffering with for the past 3 years, has disappeared. Johnny we are so happy for you and we know Elize is taking good care of you. All of you know Stephan & Juliet Spieker very well. They were in Pretoria for business when Stephan became very ill. Stephan is diabetic and had a cut under his right foot which didn’t heal. Went to the Doctor and was admitted to Hospital in Pretoria. The Doctors were treating him to prevent further infection and tried to save his foot. Very sadly Stephan underwent an amputation below the knee on 25th March 2017. The operation was a success and the Surgeon is very happy with the outcome. Stephan is very positive and doing well under the circumstances.

During the afternoon at River Valley Dallas & Tessa King surprised us with a visit. It was so good to see you guys. Tessa is very positive and looks well for a person who is having chemo treatments. Please keep Tessa, Wally, Johnny and Stephan in your prayers for a complete recovery. Terry and Gayle Schefermann are very excited. They are flying on 27/03/2017 to visit their son and family in the UK. They will also meet their youngest grandson Jack for the 1st time. After a few weeks they will then fly to Dubai to visit their other son and family and see their 3 grandchildren, who have camped with us on rallies before. We wish you a pleasant flight and enjoy your visits with your precious families.

From my side I wish to extend my sincere condolences to Lesley Rayson’s family on the passing of Lesley. May she Rest in Peace. To Wally, Johnny, Tessa and of course Stephan, our Provincial Councillor, wishing you all a speedy recovery and trust you will all be ready to rally again soon. Reading all the news in this edition about River Valley sounds like we certainly missed a fantastic weekend but unfortunately we had a very important birthday to attendR.Brent Smith who celebrated his 8th birthday on the rally weekend. Granny and Grampa just had to be there and celebrate with him and his friends. What a wonderful day we had as well. In our day it was so easy to have birthday parties,

nothing like putting a children’s party together today. So much to organise and plan. Very tiring indeed. And lastly I will be counting down the days again. This time for the arrival back home after a very long time our son Vaughn and of course his lovely wife, Marlena. This will be her first trip out of America. Unfortunately the boys won’t be coming out with them this time maybe when they visit again in the future. They arrive on the 2nd June. So lots of excitement planning for the visit. And finally to everyone going to Scottburgh Rally, safe travels and enjoy. Cheers for now
