GOD BLESS YOU The Bible abounds in pictures of blessing: blessing sought, blessing promised, blessing conferred, and blessing received. Blessing presupposes a benefactor and a recipient. In the Bible, blessing is ultimately from God. When God created the earth’s animals, “He blessed them” and commanded them to multiply (Gen. 1:22). Natural abundance is one of the images of divine blessing in the Bible. It is a universal blessing, not limited to believers in God; as Jesus said, God “makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the un-just” (Matthew 5:45). A second picture of blessing is the blessing of OT fathers on their sons as they approached their time of death. Such blessings were more than good wishes as we see with Moses, as an extension of family blessings, Moses blessed his nation on the eve of his death (Deut. 33). Another image of blessing is the blessing tied to the covenant. We can see five Biblical themes in reference to blessing and covenant: God promises to bless those who keep His covenant; blessing as part of a test of the obedience of peo-ple; blessing in some sense a reward for obedience; an inauguration of a future era (Deut. 28-30 and 1 Samuel 12); a prophetic word of judgment for a nation’s failure to obey God’s covenant; the theme of grace. As we live in the New Covenant we receive the benefit of spiritual blessings because we belong to Christ’s kingdom. Our blessing in the Lord is a spiritual inheritance reserved in heaven for the believer. In fact, in the Beatitudes Jesus pronounces blessing on those who suffer deprivation in this life. Often people associate a blessing in terms of wealth but that is not consistent with Biblical teaching. Paul tells us in 2 Cor. 8:9 that though Christ was rich, it was for our sake that He became poor, so that we could become rich. This is a reference to Jesus experiencing the glory of heaven before He became the Suffering Servant here on earth for our benefit. We will experience the glory of heaven and the Lord one day and there is no greater blessing than being in the presence of God. Allow me to move on from the theology of blessing and consider the application of blessing. I have adapted a para-graph of thought from a friend and deacon named Skip Laird who personalized the thought of bestowing a blessing upon his children. When we offer a blessing upon someone it should not be a superficial slogan. Those who are God’s children have a very personal relationship with the Lord. He has shown great love and cares for you, and has proven He listens when called upon. So when calling on God to bless someone, an event, or travel mercies, you are calling on the Almighty God of all creation, the sustainer of all that is, to pause, as it were, for a moment. In that moment we are asking Him to focus special attention to a person or situation, to their care and sustenance. To the needs that only He can know that you or the person you are praying for have! And also that you may know that He has, indeed, extended His blessing for His glory! God Bless You! Pastor Tom
The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it. Proverbs 10:22 NKJV
