From 2074/12/18 (1st April 2018)

As per the Purbanchal University (PU) course syllabus for B.E. Civil, the final (8th) semester students are required to carry out a six-credit group project work on different civil engineering themes/topics based on their interests. Each project group generally consists of five students and a project supervisor is assigned to the group.

The Civil Engineering Department has outlined some guidelines on the students’ project works. The project groups need to prepare project proposals on their selected topics/themes and carry out PowerPoint presentations in front of an examination committee comprising of the respective project supervisors and other three to four faculty members from the department. After the proposal defense, the project groups start their project work under the guidance of their supervisors. Once their work is completed, the project groups have to prepare draft project reports according to the given guidelines and submit to the department. Then, the department arranges the final project defense date for the group. In the final defense, an examination committee

AUTOCAD TRAINING FOR B.E. CIVIL FINAL YEAR STUDENTS

A 30-hour long “AutoCAD Training” was conducted for B.E. Civil 7th semester (Batch-2013) students. Daily two-hours of “AutoCAD” training classes were conducted for fifteen days from 6th to 25th October 2017. A total of thir ty students of the batch par ticipated in the training. The AutoCAD is a computer software tool used to prepare engineering drawings and the training was provided to the students to help them in their final semester project works and professional careers. After the completion of the training, the participants with 80% or more class attendance were awarded the certificates of participation.

comprising of the respective project supervisors, faculties from the department and an external examiner appointed by the university evaluates the project work. Finally the project groups should submit their hard-bound project reports to the department after incorporating the corrections/suggestions given by the examination committee.

A total of eleven project groups of 8th semester (Batch-2012) students were formed in this session, but one of the groups did not participate in the final defense/examination. After the 2015 earthquakes in Nepal, most of the civil engineering students in AITM overwhelmingly opted for structural analysis and design of buildings for their final semester project works. This year too, ten of the eleven groups carried out their project works on structural design while the remaining one group did its project work on district level earthen road design. This year’s final project defense began on 3rd November 2017 and was completed at the end of the month.

A 30-hour long basic training of Structural Analysis Program (SAP) was conducted for B.E. Civil 8th semester (Batch-2013) students. Daily two-hours training classes were conducted for fifteen days from 13th to 28th December 2017. A total of thirty students of the batch participated in the training program. After the mega earthquakes of 2015 in Nepal, almost all the Bachelor in Civil Engineering students are attracted to carry out their final semester 6-credit group project work on structural analysis and design of different types of buildings. The SAP-2000 is a design tool which assists the students in their project work. After conclusion of the training, the participants with 80% or more class attendance were awarded the certificates of participation.

Six B.E. Civil 7th semester (Batch-2014) students have begun a student’s research project on “Soil-cement

Stabilized Interlocking Brick” from 8th October 2017 under the guidance of Er. Prakash Dulal (full-time faculty

of Civil Engineering Department at AITM) with necessary support from the department and college.

Compressed Stabilized Earth Block (CSEB) machines, designed & provided by Asian Institute of Technology

(AIT), Bangkok, are being used to prepare soil-cement stabilized bricks. Unlike the traditional bricks, the CSEB

need not to be burnt for strength. Due to this uniqueness, these bricks/blocks can be easily produced and

used primarily in building constructions even in remote areas of Nepal without using fire woods or other types

of fuels to burn them. The research output could be a milestone for reconstruction work in the aftermath of

2015 mega earthquake in Nepal.

The primary objective of this research is to find out optimum ratios of the four major constituents of CSEB

(soil, cement, water and typical clays available in Kathmandu valley and nearby areas) for maximum

compressive strength of the blocks.

2. ONGOING EVENTS

3. UPCOMING EVENTS

As required by the Civil Engineering Department, the B.E. Civil 8th semester (Batch-2013) students are now preparing proposals for their final semester six-credit project work. Five project groups of 2013-Batch students and one group of 2011-Batch students (who did not participate in their regular project work along with their batch-mates) have been formed for this academic session, and one project supervisor is assigned to each project group.

Proposal defense is the first step in the final semester project work of the students. A project group normally consists of five students. The project group has to prepare a group proposal (seven to ten pages) on their chosen project theme according to the given guidelines in consultation with their supervisor and submit hard copy of the proposal to the department. In addition, they have to prepare PowerPoint presentation slides and present their proposals in front of an examination committee consisting of the project supervisor and two/three senior faculties from the department. The project group can begin their project work once the proposal defense is completed.

FINAL YEAR STUDENTS’ PROJECT PROPOSAL PREPARATION

i. AutoCAD Training for 7th Semester Students

A 30-hour long “AutoCAD Training” for B.E. Civil 7th semester (Batch-2014) students is scheduled from 3rd January 2018. The “AutoCAD” is a computer software tool used to prepare engineering drawings and the training will help the students in their final semester project works and their professional careers. A total of twenty-one students will be participating in the training.

ii. Hydropower Engineering” Field Visit for B.E. Civil 7th Semester Students

A three-day field visit of “Hydropower Engineering” course for B.E. Civil 7th semester (Batch-2014) is tentatively planned for the last week of January 2018. The students will visit and observe three hydropower stations (Marsyandi and Modikhola) in the field visit. Preparations for the field visit are underway.

iii. Final Project Defense of B.E. Civil 8th Semester Students

Final defense of the final semester project works of B.E. Civil 2013-Batch students will be conducted immediately after their final examination is over by the third week of April 2018. The project groups and supervisors have been informed in this regard and necessary preparations (e.g., providing project report preparation guidelines to the students & supervisors; request for external examiners) will be completed once their proposal defenses are over.

CIVIL ENGINEERING MODEL PREPARATION

Six of the 2013-Batch Civil Engineering students showed their keen interest on preparation of civil engineering

models, and started preparing a prototype model of a typical airport from 22nd September 2017 under the

guidance of a full-time faculty in the department, Er. Prakash Dulal, with necessary support from the

department and college. The model preparation is underway. The students work on the model whenever they

are free from their regular academic activities. The model will be put on display at AITM lobby once it is

completed.
