Jamie coached Kate when she first started select soccer at U9 until U12 for Canton and will bring defensive talent to LTU with her goal tending and back line abilities. She was a great athlete in her younger years as well. Katelyn will sign with LTU next month, becoming one of the very first Blue Devil female soccer players. She will be an integral piece of the Women’s Soccer program and Jamie is very excited to have the opportunity to work with Kate again. Watson will lead Plymouth High School this spring after receiving All District honors last year as a Junior. She plans to major in Civil Engineering due to her love for math and desire to improve the environment. We wish you the best of luck Wipeout!

Notes from the Directors Chair

I just want to take a moment and thank all the parents that took the time to fill out the evaluation/survey regarding their coach a few weeks ago. We had nearly 200 responses and although we did receive some “negative” feedback I was very impressed to see the number of you who took the time to express your satisfaction and happiness with your son or daughters coach and team.

I also want to let all of you know that we are using your comments as a tool to help our coaches grow and improve. In saying that I also want to assure you that unless you stated otherwise we are keeping your comments anonymous and confidential. For those of you that included a phone number we also plan to contact you over the next month or so to give you the opportunity to discuss any other feedback you may have with us personally.

Thanks again for helping us be the best we can be for your sons and daughters!

As I hope everyone is aware, this years tryouts are set for June 16th and 17th. The exact times for each age group will be announced on or before April 1st. I know everyone is anxious to find out next years coaching assignments and I want to assure everyone that Ian Jones, Bill Joker and I are diligently working to finalize that list. At the moment we are meeting with all of our coaches individually and determining what we think will be the best fit for our players and teams for 2012/13. We hope to have our coaching assignments finalized and announced by the end of March.

Well that is all for now but as always I want to encourage all of you to contact me at anytime if you have any questions, concerns, comments or just thoughts on how we can improve what we offer our Celtic players, my email address is [email protected].

Yours in Soccer,

Peter AlexanderCSC Club Director/DOC

From the President’s Desk…

Dear Friends in soccer,

as we begin to move to the outdoor season we wanted to let you know we have been busy making improvements to Independence Park.

By the spring season you will see we have expanded the south playing area and added a field towards the east side next to the parking lot. In addition, we have been working on improving the drainage in the south playing areas and upgrading the gravel parking area to the south side as well as construction of a storage building. The long term goal is to make an improved parking area for the Canton Cup and add another field.

The township drain construction project on the north side of the park has been completed and the fields have been restored with sod and seed.

I look forward to seeing everyone in the spring and at the coaches in March.Until then, keep kicking.

Comparison of Ground Reaction Forces on Different Types of Goalkeeper Dives By Bryanne Bellovary

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to determine if a goalkeeper’s landing, when using a taught diving technique, created a softer landing than a landing performed just on the side of the body. Often a goalkeeper’s specific skills, such as diving, are over looked when conducting research, so literature was limited. To create a more game-like dive landing, techniques taught by most coaches were used. This landing involved having the ball and forearm land first compared to just land-ing on the side of the body. A soccer ball was thrown away from the subject so that they would have to perform a dive, and then applied both landing techniques onto force plat-forms. The peak ground reaction forces (GRF) were 3185.1 N when landing on the side of the body first and 4364.7 N when landing on the ball and forearm first. Impulse was also calcu-lated at 334306.7 N and 263456.6 N respectively. Higher peak GRF during the ball and forearm landing could be attributed to the smaller surface area the GRF has to act on. An inter-esting finding was that during the side of the body landing, another spike in GRF occurred. It was thought that it could be possible that the subject’s body rebounded up some and hit the force platform again. It would have been best if video analysis had been used in tandem with the force platforms to see the subject’s body actions during the landing.

In the world of sports and fitness, “RECOVERY” has lost its function and is not a focal point in way too many people’s training. As an athlete, recovery is the most important factor in training. Without proper recovery, several complications can arise and overtraining can occur. Also, the positive ad-aptations that are trying to be reached cannot be realized. Training to become stronger is an adaptation that will not be achieved if constant stimulus and stress is placed on the body. Obviously, the training itself must be rigorous, consis-tent, sound, and technical to necessitate recovery. “Recov-ery,” for this subject matter, is a broad term which will cover everything from sleep, nutrition, hydration, training breaks, and so on.

Years ago, recovery might have been only for those few elite professional athletes that trained year round. Today, millions of youth athletes are playing sports throughout the year and many are playing on different teams at once. Daily practic-es, weightlifting, skill training, speed training, schooling, etc. can wreak havoc on the body, mentally and physically. If not equipped with adequate recovery mechanisms, compli-cations can be extremely high for these young age groups. As coaches and parents, we must have a firm understanding of the role and importance of recovery.

POTENTIAL ISSUES WITH INAPPROPRIATE RECOVERY

• Weightloss/gain • DecreasedPerformance • Higherriskforcatastrophicinjuries • Stressfractures • Impropergrowthandmaturationofskeletomuscular system • Loweredimmunity • Fatigue • Irritability • Decreasedmentalalertness • Digestiveproblems •Insomnia • Decreasedoverallhealth • Hormonalandotherphysiologicalchanges

DISCUSSION

These recovery methods can all lend to greater recovery and less chance for complications. However, you do not need to overthink recovery. Make sure athletes eat well and get enough rest as they are crucial to recovery. Be aware of how your athlete/child feels and responds physically and mentally. Health and longevity should be the most impor-tant consideration for any athlete.

“Exercise to stimulate, not to annihilate. The world wasn’t formed in a day, and neither were we. Set small goals and build upon them.”- Lee Haney (8x Mr. Olympia)

I am Darryl Noel and I have the honor to be the Tournament Director of the 2012 Canton Cup.

I am also very proud to represent our truly outstanding cast of volunteers on the 2012 Canton Cup Committee. These dedicated volunteers on the Committee and the hundreds of volunteers that help during the Memorial Day Weekend are what make the Canton Cup the Highest Quality tournament in the country. It is because of the personal commitment of this amazing group that the 2011 Canton Cup set a national record as the largest 3 day club based tournament in the country with 780 teams. We take a great deal of pride in being the “high quality big tournament with the small tournament feel”.

This year is a very special year for the Canton Cup. This is the 30th annual Canton Cup. Preparation has been underway for many months. Our Team knows that we will be able to increase the quality experience for our guests to an even higher level this year.

Team Registration is going strong and over 350 teams have already chosen to be our guest and join us at the 2012 Can-ton Cup. The Canton Cup Committee and I are well on our way to give them the very best Canton Cup Experience this year.

If being a part of a very energetic, dedicated and fun loving team is something that interests you, we would love to have you join us as part of our team. If you can join us for just a little bit of time or more extended amount of time you are welcome.

Please contact me at [email protected] and we can find a place for you in the Canton Cup Family.

Thank you,

Darryl T. NoelTournament Director2012 Canton Cup

Welcome to Celtic Meeting

Nike Elite Training 2.0 visited HV on February 15th and worked with a few of our Celtic teams. Players went through a variety of physical and soccer related tests, providing them with a unique combination of physical assessment and data collection. Using their special equipment, player’s performance was captured and evaluated to create individual reports.

Players had an opportunity to understand how they perform and also to see where they can improve. This unique opportunity was provided free of charge by Nike. Although players didn’t go through the entire training session due to space requirements, it allowed the club to test it out in hopes of doing it again outside in the near future with all teams.
