The report cards will be completed and sent home to parents at the end of week 3 next term. Learning moment today - Today at first break, I was greeted with a large number of passionate students peacefully protesting the concern over a marking on a tree. I met with them all and answered their concerns over what they had called, the significant memory tree. This is the transcript of my written response delivered to all our year 3 to 6 classes today. The deep learning from this is premised on the work in their current English unit – persuasive writing. A Message from our Principal, Mr Finney regarding the trees. Dear students Today I was able to witness ‘lifelong learning in action.’ A group of students showed passion yet a sense of calmness, in protest of their beliefs. They were concerned their ‘significant tree’ was going to be cut down. I met with the group and explained as I am now, why the tree has a painted mark on it. Last week, I asked a tree specialist to identify unsafe trees within our school as I must ensure the safety of my students, staff, parents and visiting guests. The result of the inspection meant that some trees require only a trim whereas as some have been identified for removal as they pose a risk to people and buildings. This particular ‘significant tree’ requires a trim only. I wish to reassure all students that the removal of any tree will be replaced by a safer species of tree. I personally love our green space environment and are an avid bush walker and camper in my spare time. It is also my long term vision for our school to develop our own ‘school learning forest.’ That is, to have a space to provide a natural habitat for local birds and wildlife designed and planted by our students. This is a long term project but one I hope you will be proud of in generations to come. The work involving tree management is expensive and will take time to complete as the school budget allows. I trust this message answers any of your concerns regarding the tree inspection and applaud you for your real life learning. If you have any further questions please ask your class teacher to discuss with you. Sincerely yours in education, Mr Finney, Principal of Moranbah East State School Safe riding to school -A few weeks ago I asked our students to adhere to the road safety guidelines in wearing a helmet when cycling to school. While it is not a legal requirement to wear a helmet when riding a scooter, for your safety and to reduce injuries you should wear protective clothing such as an approved helmet, etc. The uptake has been very pleasing though I am still concerned some children are not wearing the appropriate safety equipment. Please think about your safety at all times when coming and leaving the school grounds. https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/safety/rules/wheeled-devices/skateboards Parades working well – Our on-line parade seems to be having a positive effect. Congratulations to all our past students of the week and ‘gotcha card’ winners. Keep working hard kids. Warm regards, the leadership team.
