CRAVEN DEC TAKES OVER THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE
The GSA launched by the Yorkshire and Humber Global Schools Association more than ten years ago and reviewed in 2010 is now administered by Craven DEC and has its own website www.globalschoolsaward.org.uk Endorsed and promoted by the Global Learning Programme and Consortium of Development Education Centres (CoDEC) it offers a framework for schools to work through at three levels: developing; embedded and enhanced. It was designed to recognise good practice in the delivery of global learning in schools in England and the Isle of Man. Schools embark on the Global Schools Award because they want to embed global learning across the school. Often it is seen as the next step after a teacher has completed the Global Teachers Award and/or the school has been a partner/expert centre in the Global Learning Programme. Having gained other Awards, for example, the Fair Achiever Award, the Rights Respecting Schools Award Level 1, Eco-schools Awards, schools may be looking for a framework to help them incorporate global learning into all aspects of the life of the school.Whilst it is well suited to schools which have completed their four terms of training with the Global Learning Programme and want to embed global learning into their school’s vision, culture and environment, it is also ideal for schools starting out on their global learning journey/new to this approach.

GREEN FUTURESCraven DEC is a partner in ‘Green Futures’, one of several projects being funded by the Big Lottery Fund and part of ‘Our Bright Future’. Green Futures is managed by the Yorkshire Dales Millennium TrustOur role in Green Futures is to support and encourage secondary school students to be agents of positive environmental change within the structure of the Eco-Schools Award programme. At the moment we are working with Eco-teams in Settle College, Nidderdale High and Cedar House schools but are looking for more secondary school partners. An exciting part of Green Futures is the opportunity for students to be part of an Annual Youth Environment Summit. The first summit will be held at Malham Tarn Field Centre during the second weekend in October when young people from all aspects of the Green Futures project will meet to plan future action, take part in fun environmental activities and learn new skills. CRAVEN SCHOOLS TO TAKE PART IN A NORTH YORKSHIRE PHILOSOPHY FOR CHILDREN (P4C) PROJECT USING SAPERE’S ‘GOING FOR GOLD’ APPROACHTeachers in six primary schools in Craven will be doing their initial training at the beginning of the autumn and spring terms. P4C is a structured and proven approach to learning through enquiry and dialogue, where students take the lead and the teaching style is facilitative. The training is subsidised by the Peter Sowerby Trust.
Why get involved?
‘I want to change attitudes to teaching and learning. I want it to be less teacher driven in St Stephen’s.’ Tony Pye, Headteacher St Stephen’s Catholic Primary School, Skipton.
‘It’s the natural way of teaching for our KS2 children.’ Katy Herbert, deputy Headteacher, Christ Church CE Primary School, Skipton.
‘28% of the children in my school have Special Educational Needs and the P4C approach to learning will work well with them. It’s about choices – thinking about options rather than taking the easiest solution’. Duggie Speight, Headteacher Carle-ton Endowed CE Primary School.
Teachers at Sutton CP School, Gargrave CE Primary and Embsay CE Primary School all hope to see more independent thinking and learning and stronger speaking, listening and questioning skills within their schools.
If you are interested in finding out more about P4C contact [email protected]. There is a possibility that another school could join the North Yorkshire project. Liz can also deliver an introductory twilight session to P4C ‘free’ for school with GLP credits or at a negotiated price.

NEW ADDITION TO RESOURCESA series of three felted story cloths telling how and why the local Asian community arrived from Mirpur in Pakistan to live and work in Skipton. The cloths were created jointly by Skipton Embroiderers’ Guild and the Broughton Road Women’s group in Skipton under the leadership of textile artist Jackie Lunn. They are very attractive and illustrate the issues of economic migration, integration and local social history. Schools and other organisations are welcome to borrow them to display as part of an event or to use as an educational resource. They are stored rolled up and the roll is approximately 1.5 x 0.5 metres and is light enough to carry. There are lightweight wooden frames which they can be attached to and these are 1.5 x 1 metre.
