` Our Vision To celebrate the journey of learning by preparing students for their future through a caring, nurturing learning culture, where all students have the opportunity to achieve personal and academic success. FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Carers, Community Members, Staff and Students I am very pleased to say that Robyn Pearce, our Manager of Corporate Services is a finalist in this years ‘Outstanding Administrative Support Officer Award’. The award recognises dedication, loyalty and commitment to the school, its staff, students and parents. Of all of the applicants across Western Australia, Robyn is one of three finalists. The winner will be announced at a presentation on Friday the 25 th of August. You may have seen Emiko Nishioka and Olivia Richardson, our two Student Social Workers around the school. We are very fortunate to have a partnership with the University of Western Australia in which we provide placements for their Master of Social Work students. Emiko and Olivia are available to help students and families, should they require social support or help in organising support within the community. On Tuesday we had a film crew from the Telethon Kids Institute who were here to film the school’s response to the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) data. Every three years information is collected about pre-primary students across Australia and the school is able to use the information collected to plan programs to address possible vulnerabilities amongst our children. The Institute was very impressed with how the school has designed and installed the Nature Play area in the Kindergarten, how we have intervention programs across the school to help students with their literacy and numeracy and how we work together with the Child and Parent Centre to support families. The video will be available for viewing on the Department of Education and AEDC websites. On the parent afternoon we conducted a satisfaction survey of parents. It was very pleasing to see the high level of satisfaction that parents show for the school. Particularly pleasing that almost all returns ‘strongly agreed’ that they would recommend Calista PS to others. Here are a couple of the comments. ‘I am happy because my daughter is happy and loves to go to school’ ‘Fantastic Primary School’ ‘The best thing I did for my children, putting them into Calista. Great School, Staff Excellent.’ Calista Primary held our faction Cross Country Carnival on the last day of term 2. The effort put in by all of the students was fantastic to see, as was the behaviour of the children spectating. It was great to see so many parents were able to attend and to support the children and the school. A big thankyou to Mr Wall and the many other staff that helped organising this terrific day. The interschool carnival is on this Friday and I wish all the competitors well. The next parent assembly will be on tomorrow and will be presented by the students from room 16. Please come along and enjoy the entertainment and join them for a morning tea in the Child and Parent Centre afterwards. Djilba Growing season (season of conception) August - September Djilba season is a time to look for the yellow and cream flowers starting on mass. Djilba is a transitional time of the year, with some very cold and clear days combining with warmer, rainy and windy days mixing with the occasional sunny day or two.

This is the start of the massive flowering explosion that happens in the South West. This starts with the yellow flowering plants such as the Acacias. Also colours that are around at this time of year are creams, combined with some vivid and striking blues.

Traditionally, the main food sources included many of the land based grazing animals as in the season before. These included the Yongar (kangaroo), the Waitj (emu) and the Koomal (possum).

As the days start to warm up, we start to see and hear the first of the new borns with their proud parent out and about providing them food, guiding them through foraging task and protecting their family units from much bigger animals, including people.

The woodland birds will still be nest bound, hence the swooping protective behaviour of the Koolbardi (Magpie) starts to ramp up and if watched closely, so to do the Djidi Djidi (Willy Wag Tails) and the Chuck-a-luck (Wattle Birds) to name a couple of others.

As the season progresses and the temperatures continue to rise, we'll start to see the flower stalks of the Balgas (Grass Trees) emerging in preparation for the coming Kambarang season.

My Life Is Ruined That was just for you

That was just our little joke So we could share a little laugh

Just the two of us alone But you took the special moment

You posted it online Now forty million people

I bark like a dog And so I hide under the covers

Cursing your very name Saying you better get a good lawyer

Or me a great agent

NIGHT & DAY That night That storm That dark and stormy night It took me back to when I was just a baby Sleeping in silence In my crib away into the night Lightning struck here and there Strike a strike Thunder goes kaboom Hush hush hush My darling young one The sun will come for another day High and bright Fresher than a cheesy grilled sandwich Waiting for the day By Rashini Room 1

Like the horizon I had no pain

Blood fell like tears

It Slipped
