Media Release: 2018 Comrades Marathon Route Changes and Official Distance

The official distance of the 2018 Comrades Marathon as well as changes to the route have been confirmed by the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA). CMA Race Director, Rowyn James says, “The officially measured and certified distance for this year’s Down Run is 90,184km.”

The 2018 Comrades Down Run will be slightly longer than the previous Down Run route. The 2016 route was 89,208km.”

James has advised that some changes will be effected from the Start at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall. He says, “On race day, our runners will start their epic Down Run journey at the City Hall, running down Chief Albert Luthuli Street, heading east. From there they will continue along Alan Paton Avenue and then contraflow onto the N3 national freeway. From there, they will glide off right onto the Market Road on ramp and then left onto the slip road to CB Downes Road and then follow the traditional Comrades route towards Polly Shortts and onwards to Durban.”

James continues, “Regarding the route into Durban, athletes will follow the N3 under the Tollgate Bridge and then take the new fly-over into David Webster

Street which becomes Bram Fischer Road. From there, our runners will turn left into Samora Machel Road which then becomes Masabalala Yengwa Avenue.”

James concludes, “Runners will then run contraflow in Masabalala Yengwa Avenue and cross to the north bound lane at Battery Beach Road. They will then take the pathway to the left between the bollards, pass the Virgin Active Gym and turn left into the tunnel before Nino’s and onto the field to the Finish Line at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.”

As per the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act 2010, James has also confirmed that the new finish at Moses Mabhida Stadium aligns with the requirements of the Events Act which necessitated the move to this iconic Durban landmark.”

James has thanked the eThekwini Metro Police and Msunduzi Traffic Police for providing escorts to ensure the safety of the route course measurer, saying, “We are working closely with all traffic and law enforcement officials to ensure the safety and integrity of the event.”

James adds, “Working with the officials at the Moses Mabhida Stadium has been a pleasure. We look forward to ensuring a great race day for both our runners and spectators on Sunday, 10 June 2018.”

For more detailed information and maps of the changes to the start and finish of the route, please visit the Comrades Marathon website: www.comrades.com

Attention trail and nature lovers! These days our lives are so preoccupied with the tasks of providing and being busy that it’s no surprise that we are constantly trying to jam as much enjoyment and experience into our “off” time as possible. We know that trail running offers this; exercise, fresh air, beautiful scenery and great people. But there are some trail run events that deliver even more… these are the bucket list runs!

Kruger2Canyon, one of KZNTR’s “Big 6”, held from 13th to 15th July is one such event. A 2 day stage trail run based

just outside Kampersrus in Limpopo, it delivers the best of both the bushveld and the ‘Berg (this is the most northern section of the Drakensberg). Runners will be privy to some of the most spectacular scenery that South Africa has to offer, including being routed through a game reserve home to 4 of the Big 5. The new venue for 2018, Franklyn Park, is an exciting new change but won’t mean any major route changes. Franklyn Park is beautifully positioned at the base of Mariepskop with great access to the mountains and the bushveld. The camping ground is set under shady trees on lush green lawns, an idyllic place to rest up after each stage. With the option of either Ultra or Marathon distances to tackle and many different entry options K2C is a race which is accessible to not only the elite amongst us.

Small pricing increase on full package With the change in venue a small increase in the price of the full tented package from R2850 to R2950 and R2350 to R2450 respectively has become necessary. This change in pricing will take place on the 15th of January at 12 noon. Set in South Africa’s first World Heritage site, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, this unique area is one of the most sought after experiential destinations in the country. The event is perfectly positioned in the July school holidays, so it’s the ideal opportunity load up the family and share a warm winter escape packed with bush and beach experiences. Although the iSimangaliso Trail Challenge primarily aims to provide runners with a one-of-a-kind trail running experience, a major focus is placed on the incorporation of spectators! Spectator packages can be booked separately (details below) and not only are they encouraged to partake in Stage 1, the 6km full moon beach run, but there will be a score of other activities on offer. Some of these are free of charge whilst a few will incur a small fee. These include guided game walks, game drives, mountain biking, horse riding and more! The partnership between KZNTR, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the legendary Wilderness Leadership School have added an unequalled quality to the event, contextualising the wilderness areas that participants will experience. For runners jetting into King Shaka from all corners of the country, the airport shuttle will depart the airport on Friday 29th June at 2pm and drop runners off again on Sunday 1st July at approx. 5.30pm (we advise not booking a flight that departs before 7pm; shuttle booking essential – email [email protected]).
