KURUNJANG PRIMARY SCHOOL ~ “Learning Together” NEWSLETTER 7 - 2019 Thursday 21 st March, 2019 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT As reported last week, last Friday was the close of nominations for school council. The number of D.E.T. and parent nominations received has equalled the positions available and as a result an election will not be required. We therefore welcome the following people to a position on School Council for 2019/2020: Parent Members Elizabeth Bajada, Melissa Gill, Chantel Pye, Kylie Vella, Noelene Eccles, Sarah Banson, Hayley Tellis and D.E.T members, Wendy McCall and Kim Mitchell. School Councillors serving their second year are Jackie Forward, Paul Naikovu, Debra McDonald, Rob D’Elia and Tom Goddard. Positions on each of School Council’s sub committees Finance, Education and Policy, Buildings and Grounds, and Fundraising, will be determined at next Tuesday’s meeting. Last Friday we also conducted our first Emergency drill for 2019. Each year we conduct 4 emergency drills, an evacuation on site, an evacuation off site, a lock down and a shelter in place according to the hypothetical emergency. On Friday we scheduled an evacuation off site. Students and staff were instructed to evacuate the site through the adjoining Kurunjang Secondary College gate, through their back oval before assembling on the adjacent athletics oval. It took 19 minutes form the alert announcement and siren for the 23 classes (602 students) and staff to leave classrooms; for each of the areas checked and cleared, and all accounted for at the assembly point.at the athletics oval. Today is Harmony Day! Cathy Burton who teaches English as an Additional Language (EAL) has assisted in the planning for students learning about the meaning of harmony, celebrating diversity, tolerance and inclusiveness. It is an ongoing life lesson supported at home and school; the importance of which is undeniable in the face of the horror of events in Christchurch NZ last week and others throughout the world. The message for all of us this Harmony Day is that everyone belongs and in spite of the differences between people and the feelings that we may all experience in feeling different or alone, there are also many things which we have in common and which join us together. I remind all parents and carers that the commencement time for school is 8.50am and the yard is supervised for the 15 minutes prior commencing at 8.35am. Students should not be coming to school earlier than this time unless they are attending Breakfast Club on Mondays and Tuesdays. OSH (Out of school Hours) Club operates every morning from 6.50am and afternoon until 6.30pm for families who require care for their children out of hours. Please contact the school for further information if you are requiring care prior to 8.35am and after 3.30pm each day. A reminder again to all our community that the Annual General Meeting is next Tuesday 27th March, at 7.00pm in the staff room. All parents are welcome to attend. Please join us for the presentation of the annual report to the community and for supper. We look forward to seeing you. ~ Learning Together STUDENT OF THE WEEK AWARDS Student of the week awards are made each week and announced in the newsletter on a Thursday.
