Fairhope Lights Up For The Holidays On Thursday, November 20

The City of Fairhope will kick off the holiday season with their annual Fairhope Tree Lighting Ceremony on Thursday, November 20. Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. and the lights come on at 6 p.m. In celebration of Fairhope’s Centen-nial, this year’s Tree Lighting is dedi-cated to Fairhope residents who are 100 years. “It is important to recognize our city’s achievements over the past 100 years as well as the lifetime achieve-ments of our residents who are 100 years old,” said Fairhope Mayor Tim Kant. The Tree Lighting Ceremony will be emceed by WABF Radio per-sonality Lori Dubose. Entertainment includes the Fairhope High School Band, the Eastern Shore Choral Soci-ety, and the Fairhope Middle School Band. Mrs. Claus will be also be passing out candy canes and letting children write a wish list to Santa for her to take back to the North Pole This year’s poster artwork is by Holly Irwin. Irwin’s work is about simplicity and beauty in con-temporary life. Irwin uses a rich, warm color palette, building up layers and depth. Each painting has a history of searching and sketching before intuition takes over and the final story begins. A display of Irwin’s art work will be on display the night of the tree lighting at the Lyon’s Share Gallery in downtown Fairhope and posters will be on sale at City Hall and Lyon’s Share Gallery be-ginning November 10th. Posters are $10 each. .

ARTIST’S SPOTLIGHT

Holly Irwin was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and studied fine art at Carnegie-Mellon University and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Irwin’s formal training emphasized drawing as the foundation of all art. Drawing the figure from live models is part of my ongoing dicipline. I constantly experi- ment with different ways of conveying the hu- man form. Irwins work is about simplicticly and beauty in contemporary life. A passion for figure drawing is the basis for my often quiet, reflective paintings.

Her goal is to bal- ance line and form, rep-resentation and abstrac- tion. I use a rich, warm color pallette, building up layers and depth. Each painting has a history of searching and sketching before intu-ition takes over and the final story begins.

Holly Irwin’s “One Star” painting is the featured artwork for 2008

All About Fairhope

Over a hundred years old, Fairhope prides itself on being a welcome home to many artists and intellectu-als. This embrace of creativity is made apparent by the collection of diverse shops, boutiques, cafes, art galler-ies and gift shops. The liberal use of wrought iron in the architecture and the constant sound of live entertainment are remi niscent of the Big Easy. Although long known for its lovely parks, moss-draped live oaks and its sweeping panoramic views of the Mobile Bay, Fairhope is now famous for its many festival offerings throughout the year.

Its three day Arts and Crafts festival, ranked 10th in the nation, the Grand Festival of Art in the fall, the November light- ing of the trees and Mardi Gras in February are just a taste of its year long com-munity celebrations. There is also an Art Walk on the first Friday of ev-ery month where the local art galleries open their doors and provide a reception to reveal the openings for the month. Add to this the constant music and food festivals and you have a vacation recipe for the mind, body and soul.
