Editorial

Attempts to achieve the goals at a time when decadence in the society is rampant, have tobe plausible steps for an institution like BUITEMS whose vision is "To be among the leadinguniversities of the world-accessible to all, imparting quality education and promotingcutting edge research."

It is the collective genius of students, teachers, administrators and all those who matter todecide and follow the guiding principles of the BUITEMS vision; which makes the difference.It is their free will and love to learn, educate and to experience as a team, that leads us toour rewards in pursuit of our stated goals. To evaluate the efforts and role played by theindividuals of this institution or to assess the results of work carried out presently is not ourtask right now; rather it has to be left for the people of this country and this province togauge in times to come.

The most commendable contribution of BUITEMS in promoting other institutions is to providecapable human resources. Our graduates are creditably engaged in contributing to theorganizational growth in the fields of Business, Industry, Electronics, Biotechnology andcomputers science etc. It has not been difficult for our graduates to catch the eye of employersin these spheres of professional life.

We are aware of the fact that our progress has to be lasting and solid and we have toproceed on a gradient of heights continuously. That is where our University would like toseek support from the society and political leadership.

It is a matter of great honor and satisfaction that the leading statutory body, BUITEMSSenate under the chairmanship of Honorable Chancellor Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi hasbeen extending support to BUITEMS' philosophy. For consistent and sustainable progressin academic development, the University needs financial support. The university hasestablished a Directorate of Financial Assistance & University Advancement with the objectof finding ways and means to achieve financial self sufficiency for carrying out academicactivities on sound footings.

Keeping modern principles of education in mind, we must encourage the students to acquirethe best knowledge available. Such wealth of knowledge is never static. It needs to growon lines commensurate to the changing times. The students must acquire a mindset whichis eager to grasp fresh research outcomes and new deductions. The university has to bealive to such need. It would be useless to impart knowledge that is already outdated beforeit reaches the students.

We at BUITEMS preach humanism in true spirit of global fraternity. We aim at enabling thestudents to build a cultured social order and society on international ideals of coherenceand one-ness. That is why we are determined to promote genuine hard work and insist onthe adoption of the rational attitude in resolving differences.

"Video ConferencingFacility Inaugurated"Reported by: Engr. Mohammad Nadeem

The newly constructed, sophisticatedly furnishedand fully equipped Video- Conferencing Hall ofthe Balochistan University of InformationTechnology, Engineering And ManagementSciences was formally inaugurated by NawabZulfiqar Ali Magsi, Governor Balochistan andChancellor, BUITEMS on June 17, 2009 at theTakatu Campus. Qari Arshad Yameen,Asstt. Professor, Islamiat held a befitting dua onthe occasion. Prof. Dr.Sohail H. Naqvi, ExecutiveDirector Higher Education, participated fromIslamabad in the ceremony via video-conferencing facility and communicated with themembers of the senate through videoconferencing and appreciated thetireless efforts of the concerned people.He mentioned that BUITEMS wasamongst the leading public sectoruniversities of Pakistan provided with thevideo-conferencing facility by the HECwith compatible equipment and tools. Hethanked the Honorable Chancellor for hisstrenuous efforts for the development ofhigher education in the province.

Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi extendedthanks to the Executive Director of theHEC for the patronizing support

extended by him to the university. Heoptimistically stated that with the provision of thevideo-conferencing facility, the students ofBalochistan would be able to benefit from thelectures of eminent professors from all over the

world. Vice Chancellor Engr.Ahmed Farooq Bazai told theGovernor that with the help ofCampus Management Solutions,BUITEMS' modern Technology isbeing introduced on a large scale.Six universities of Pakistan arealready taking advantage of thistechnology and BUITEMS is thefirst one in Balochistan to use it.The Honorable Vice Chancelloradded that very soon, withBUITEMS acting as the hub, otheruniversities would be provided witha fiber optic connection. He saidthat all the universities of HECwould be able to come in closerassociation with each other and

also benefit from teachers outside Pakistan.

He also presented a report on the progress anddevelopment of BUITEMS. The Senate,deliberated on the suggestions of the Syndicateand Finance and Planning Committee andapproved the budget recommendations forfiscal years 2008-2009 and 2009-2010. TheSenate also approved the introduction of newdisciplines like Architecture, Micro Biology, andPlant Sciences at BUITEMS, w.e.f Fall 2009.

The Senate applauded the efforts of BUITEMSin introducing advanced and moderntechnology. It has expanded the scopeof programs to encompass manyfresh disciplines and technologiesneeded for keeping pace with themodern day requirements. The dutiesthat IT professionals perform alsoinclude data management,networking, engineering computerhardware, database and softwaredesign, as well as the managementand administration of all systems. NINVAST Workshop on"Vacuum Science &Technology"Reported by: Dr. Shoaibullah Khan

Pakistani Scientists have made their mark in thefield of nuclear science and technology throughtheir amazing performance. A workshop onVacuum Science and Technology was held inIslamabad from 6th to 10th April, 2009 under theaegis of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission& Kahoota Research Laboratories where latestfindings were shared by scientists from 30institutions.

Dr. Shoaibullah Khan,Chairman,Departmentof Physics participatedin the workshop onbehalf of theBalochistanUniversity of InformationTechnology,Engineering

and Management Sciences.Topics discussed atthe meeting were related to researchdevelopments in designing vacuum systems,creation of vacuum in the medium range, highrange and ultra high range using of rotary pumps,diffusion pumps and turbo molecular pumps.

Detection of leaks in the vacuum system, leakidentification and removal were discussed atlength. Scientists from various institutionsincluding BUITEMS were invited to share theirimpressions and give comments on thepresentations. comments based on his specialized studies andprofessional expertise. The participants of theworkshop also had the opportunity of beingbriefed about studies on plasma, fusion,metallurgy, and nanotechnology inside vacuum.

Youth Delegation VisitsChinaReported by: Ms. Zaibunnissa Gharshin

With the object of nurturing fraternal and friendlyrelations between the Youth of China andPakistan, a 10 day good-will visit was arrangedby the Federal Ministery for Youth Affairs,Pakistan. The delegation comprised 100 youngmen and women belonging to different walks oflife and was headed by Mr. Shahid Bhutto, theFederal Minister for Youth Affairs. Ms.Zaibunnisa Gharshin, Public Relations Officer,BUITEMS had the distinction of being selectedto represent the youth of Balochistan province.The delegation focused on learning about thecultural set up of the Chinese society, culturaltraditions and civilization in order to cultivatecloser understanding and goodwill among theChinese and Pakistani Youth.The delegationvisited Urumqi, Lanzhou and Beijing under thehospitality of the China Youth Federation. In

Urumqi, the delegation was taken on a tour toMarker International Furniture Co, InternationalProduct Corporation Lines of BAOSTEELGroup, Xinjiang Bi Iron and Steel CorporationLtd, Xinjiang Medical University, XinjiangSeniors High School and Urumqi Internationalgrand bazaar.

The next visit of Pakistan Youth Delegation wasto Lanzhou in the Gansu Province. In Lanzhou,the members of the delegation visi tedKhwanghka (yellow) River, the Paxta Street, YiWu Trade Market as well as the North WestNormal University, where a special function washeld in honor of the visiting delegation. Themembers exchanged ideas with the studentscommunity and had the privilage of meeting theVice Chancellor, Ms. Suzi. The delegation weretaken on a guided tour to Linxia, also in theGansu province, and had the opportunity ofseeing Linxia Eastern Residences.On the lastleg of the tour, the delegation went to Beijing,where they saw the Be Hang University, theForbidden City, the Great China Wall, thePakistani Embassy in China and the Great Hallof the People. The delegation was presented tothe Vice President of the standing committee ofthe Peoples' Congress of China and MemberCentral Committee of the Political Bureau of theCommunist Party of China, Mr. Wang Zhaoguo.

The visit by the delegationwas of immense valuebecause the members hadthe first hand experience ofbeing acquainted with theChinese culture andintroducing our own culturethere.

working mothers. BUITEMS has established aproper Daycare Centre for looking after theyoung children of faculty and staff duringUniversity timings. Ms. Musarrat Karamat tookthe initiative for the establishment of the DaycareCentre and was later completed by Ms. NadiaAli Shah and Ms. Sadaf Amjad Lecturers Facultyof Management Sciences and made every effortto provide a comfortable, safe and secureenvironment for the kids, much to relief of theirparents. Daycare Centre became operationalin April '09. The Vice Chancellor Engr. AhmedFarooq Bazai visited the centre and appreciatedthe efforts of the teachers whoworked hard for itsestablishment.

A 17 member team Footballteam from BUITEMS, afterquali fying in the Inter-University Zonalchampionship, proceeded to

Lahore to take part in thefinal round. Twelve teamshad qualified to play in thisround as a result of theirperformance in zonalchampionship. For thefinal round, they weredivided into four groups.BUITEMS was placed ingroup B alongwith MalakandUniversity and COMSAT.The final round of thechampionship was played atLahore Universi ty ofManagement Sciences fromApril 12 to April 20, 2009.The tournament was playedon league system. The pre

quarter final match between BUITEMS andMalakand University was a closely contestedgame. Both teams exerted hard to dominate, butthe match ended in a 1-1 draw. The matchbetween BUITEMS and COMSAT was again atussle for dominance between two equal teams,but BUITEMS managed to carry the day onpenalty kicks and qualified to play in the quarterfinals. In quarter finals, BUITEMS football teamwas pitched against the University of SportsSciences, Islamabad. Both teams strived hardto get the upper hand. BUITEMS captainNassarullah Khan impressed the onlookers withhis speed and body-dodges. The team from the

University of Sports Sciences finally managedto win the match by one goal. Mr. Masood AhmedKasi (Team Manager) and Mr. NaseebullahKakar (Coach) accompanied the team on thevisit to Lahore. In the overall rankings, BUITEMSFootball team was placed 4th out of all theUniversity teams in the country. This is acreditable achievement and the manager, thecoach and the players deserve warmappreciation for the same.

Decorative Art ContestReported by: Ms. Ayesha Yaqoob

A three day workshop of Decorative Art Contestwas held in Iqra University Quetta from 23rd ofApril to 25th of April, 2009. It was a youthdevelopment program conducted by Center forCivic Education, Pakistan. The theme of thecontest was "Young people for peaceful andtolerant society". The contest was divided intotwo parts i.e painting and calligraphy. Renownedartist of Pakistan Mrs. Fauzia Minallah was thereat the contest to guide the students. Renownedartist from Quetta Mr. Kaleem guided thecontestants in painting and NCA teacher forcalligraphy was there to give tips to the studentsin the art of calligraphy.

Four universities of Quetta namely University ofBalochistan, SBK Women University, IqraUniversity and BUITEMS participated in theworkshop. Thirteen students from BUITEMSattended the workshop. BUITEMS won two

second positions in painting, one third positionand one consolation price in calligraphy. Theirnames are:Painting: O Sidra Hasnain BS (BA) 2nd position,

The 12th All Pakistan Allama Iqbal shield debatewas held at the Higher Education Commission(HEC) Secretariat in Islamabad on May 7, 2009.The Federal Minister of Education, Mir HazarKhan Bijarani was the chief guest of the event.

The BUITEMS team comprising Sania SabirQureshi of BS Economics, Qudratullah Khan ofMBA, Nasrullah Khan of B.S Economics andSami-ur-Rehman of MBA were accompanied bythe Director of Student affairs BUITEMS Mr.Ahmad Shah Durrani. The BUITEMS team wasthe first to be called on to express their views,which they did commendably with great zeal andenthusiasm. The University of Punjab won

shields both for Urdu and English in thecompetition. Begum Shahnaz Wazir Ali,Special assistant to Prime Minister onSocial sector and Incharge HEC gracedthe occasion with her presence alongwith Dr Sohail Naqvi: Executive DirectorHEC, Mr. Rahim Bux Channa: DGacademics HEC, Dr Mukhtar Ahmed:Member Operations and Planning HEC,students and the media. Cash Prizes ofRs. 25,000, Rs.20,000 and Rs. 15,000were awarded to individual speakerswho won first, second and third positionsrespectively. A one day Seminar was arranged atthe Expo Centre of Takatu Campus ofBUITEMS on May 9, 2009 under theauspices of BARGAD-an NGO. Themain objective of the Seminar was tomake the students realize their ownpotential as peace makers. In hisopening address the Honorable ViceChancellor, Engr. Ahmed FarooqBazai, emphasized the need of socialreforms through the efforts of the youthas they are 30% of the total populationof the country. He asserted that peaceis essential for the continuity of the

developmental process. He advised thestudents to hold frequent meetings for discussingand discovering fresh avenues of intellectualrefinement. Ms. Sabiha Shaheen, CEOBARGAD talked about the growing number ofeducation-seeking youth at our universities. Shewas encouraged to see that female studentswere coming forward to partake of theintellectual boom presently taking place atinstitutions of higher learning. Director,QUILLIAM Foundation, London, Mr. MajidNawaz, highlighted the activities of hisfoundation and narrated his own experience ofblind subjugation to a revolutionary movement.

BUITEMS is rapidly growing in stature as anotable seat of higher education and is able tocatch the eyes of distinguished visitors to theprovincial metropolis. It was on April 27, 2009

that H.E.DanielJaunneanou, theAmbassador ofFrance to Pakistanarrived in Quettaon an official visit.He made it a pointto visi t theBalochistanUniversi ty of

Information Technology, Engineering andManagement Sciences on priority basis. He wasaccompanied by the Honorary Consul Generalof France in Balochistan, Brig.(R) Abdul Raziq.The guests were given a warm welcome on theirarrival at the City Campus and were escorteddirectly to the auditorium for exchange of ideaswith students and faculty members. The meetingformally commenced with the recitation of versesfrom the Holy Quran. Mrs. Batool Ishaq Lecturerin English briefed the honorable guests aboutthe growth of the university & supplemented herpresentation with slides. Mr. Ahmed Shah who

conducted the proceedings, presented aprofessional life sketch of His Excellency theAmbassador who took over his diplomaticresponsibilities in Pakistan on October 31, 2008.

In his key address to the audience, HisExcellency the Ambassador made it clear thathis visit to Balochistan was for listening andlearning. He was keen to foster closer relationswith Balochistan and asserted that he had givenpriority to BUITEMS, faith in which is shown bygreat universities like Vancouver by establishinglinkage. Stating his government's policy, he madeit clear that France has deep respect for Islam.A large muslim community there, is well-integrated in the French cultural set up. Heproudly referred to the presence of a Muslimminister on the French Cabinet. "French peoplehave great regard for moral and aestheticvalues and are firm practitioners of HumanRights" he said. The Honorable Ambassadormentioned that the 21st Century is an age of bigmutual interest groups and future is for bigregional groupings and alliances. He stated thatthe geographical location of Pakistan made thiscountry a place of pivotal importance in international affairs. "Strategically Balochistancan benefit immensely from the prospectivegroupings. The French institutions of higherlearning offer brilliant prospects of intellectualgrowth. French language is a valuable assetwhich can be profitably marketed in the newemerging scenario". He concluded his addresswith the remark that "France is a fantasticmosaic of culture and activity." A lengthyquestion and answer session followed theAmbassador's address during which importantcul tural, idealogical , educational andcooperation issues were taken up. Seminar on "Scope andUtility of Psychology inPresent Age"Reported by: Mr. Misri khan

A seminar on "Scope and Utility of Psychologyin Present Age" was organized by the studentsof BS (Psychology) under the supervision ofMr. Aziz-u-din Agha at BUITEMS city campusJinnah Town Quetta on May 7, 2009. The seminarfocused on the utility of Psychology in presentage as well the scope of application ofPsychology in real life. Students from everyfaculty of BUITEM and the students ofPsychology from University of Balochistanparticipated in the seminar. The seminar startedwith the recitation of Holy Quran and theproceedings were conducted by Miss Batool.Mr. Aziz-u-din Agha started the seminar byintroducing the guest speaker Dr. RahimBarakzai (mental health specialist). Dr. RahimBarakzai delivered a comprehensive lecture onthe topic and shed light on the increasingdemand of the subject. He answered thequestions raised by the participants of seminar.A pool of information was provided to thestudents through this informative seminar. Eightstudents from different departments related topsychology presented their views on psychology.They included Nisar Ahmed and Awais NajeebBS (BA), Faiza Munawar and Ulasyar Khan BS(BA), Ejaz Ali and Marjan Arbab BS (ECO),Khanzaib Khan BS (SS), and Irfan Ali BS (ECO).Miss Ayesha thanked the guest for givingvaluable time out of his busy schedule. Theseminar ended with the distribution of certificatesamong the organizers of seminar; Asmatullah,Misri Khan, Khajista Khan from BS(psychology) and the speaker participants ofdifferent departments of the universi ty.

A Husn-i-Qiraat and Naat Khwani competitionwas organized by the Islamic Society of StudentsAffairs, BUITEMS on April 29, 2009 in the CityCampus Auditorium. A large number of maleand female students, members of the facultyand administrative staff attended the event. TheStage Secretary of the event was Sameen Khan,student of BS (International Relations). All theparticipants presented Qiraat and Naat in animpressive style, unremitting rhythm and withengaging voices. According to the decision ofthe jury, in Qirat, Riaz-ul-Haq, student of BS(Petroleum & Gas Engineering) got first position,Mushtaq Hussain, student of BS (BusinessAdministration) got second position, andMuhammad Hammad Jaffer, student of BS(Petroleum & Gas Engineering) got thirdposition. In the category of Naat, MuhammadHammad Jaffer, student of BS (Petroleum & GasEngineering) got first position, Syed OwaisAthar, student of BS (Electronic Engineering) gotsecond position while Sabiqa Batool, student ofMBA (Banking & Finance) got third position. Atthe end of the competition, Mr. Ahmad ShahDurrani, Director Student Affairs thanked theworthy Vice Chancellor for his supervision &great interest in co-curricular & extra-curricularactivities.

The Literary Society of Balochistan University ofInformation Technology, Engineering &Management Sciences, arranged an essaywriting competition on April 27, 2009 at TakatuCampus. Students from all departmentsassembled to prove their capabilities asessayists. A single topic was given to studentsboth in English and Urdu i.e. "Why Muslims areportrayed as terrorists? How can they changetheir image into a peaceful community?" Within60 minutes, the students were able to come up

The seminar began with the recitation of versesfrom the Holy Quran by Qari Arshad Yameen.There were two sessions. In the first session,Prof. Dr. M.A.K. Concluding the firstsession, Engr. Ahmed Farooq Bazai,Vice Chancellor BUITEMS said, "In the prevalentlaw and order situation we have to be self-reliant and vigilant to avoid any untowardincidents." He remarked that universities are notmerely for teaching curricula but they are toimpart education with the message of universalpeace and brotherhood. He added thatteachers are to play the pivotal role oftransforming ordinary people into true humanbeings by polishing their physical, mental andspiritual faculties. Higher Education Commission-Financial AidDevelopment (HEC-FAD) program, a three yearprogram funded by USAID, organized a two dayNational Conference on public-privatepartnerships for Higher Education on May 25-26, 2009 followed by a workshop on "WritingEffective Proposals for Fund Raising" on May27, 2009. Representatives from 125 public andprivate universities, HEC, the business andcorporate sector and NGO's and civil societyorganizations attended the conference on May25-26 while Vice chancellors and seniorrepresentatives of 11 public and private sectoruniversities attended the workshop on May 27.The agenda focused on improving quality andincreasing access to higher education:Development and Financial Aid.

Dr. John W. Shumaker welcomed theparticipants. There were two workshops and aspecial session on May 25, 2009. Engr. AhmedFarooq Bazai Vice Chancellor BUITEMS wasthe moderator for the workshop titled "Optionsfor Financial Aid Development: Challenges forImplementation" while Mr. Arthur Hauptman,International Policy Expert in Higher EducationFinance and Financial Aid Arlington Virginia

delivered the keynote address. Mr.Hauptman noted that it wasimperative for growth of publicsector universities to improve thequal ity of their academicprograms and charge higher fees.He proposed to develop afinancial aid program in whichstudents hailing from higherincome group of society pay fullfee while students from lowerincome group receive feewaivers. Dr. Powell stressed on relations with corporatesector which could generate money and createopportunities for students and professors ineducational and professional domains. Dr.Katherine Boswell emphasized that the highereducation leaders need political support fromthe government and legislators as well as enoughfinancial resources to maintain their campuses.Ms. Chato Calderon, one of the panelists of thissession, discussed the role of alumniassociations. In her concluding remarks Mrs.Shahnaz Wazir Ali stressed the need of equity-based approach for higher education. ViceChancellor revealed that the BalochistanUniversi ty of Information Technology,Engineering and Management Sciences, is oneof the six universities in the country where highlysophisticated technology like CampusManagement Solutions is being introduced. IEEE Celebrated its 125th Anniversary on 13thMay 2009. In Pakistan IEEE Islamabad sectionorganized the Pakistan Student Congress(29-30 May) 2009 at NUST Islamabad. The aimof the congress was to bring the different IEEE

Student Branches together to share their lifeexperiences with one another. The PSC 2009was spread over 3 days. The office bearers andother 21 members of IEEE BUITEMS SBparticipated.

The 3 day congress was formally opened by Mr.Osaid Khaliq (Chairman, PSC 2009). After thatDr. Abidi had an interactive session on "How totake Pakistan EE to the next level". Mr. NadeemChawhan held a session on "ChangingMindsets". An activity named as "Ice Breaking"followed to provide Networking Opportunity tothe IEEE Student Members from all across Pa-kistan. Mr. Aamer Jelani (Counselor, IEEE-NUSTSEECS) delivered a message from the Directorof Region 10 for the PSC 2009 participants. TheSSR of Lahore section Mr. Amir Zahoorconducted a session to motivate "PakistaniYouth". An opportunity was given to IEEEstudent branches of different universities ofPakistan to come on to the stage and introducethemselves. FAST-NUCES Karachi and NED Karachi gave5 minutes presentation each. Mr. ShahabSiddiqui (IEEE Student Activities Chair, KarachiSection) delivered a talk "Why we are here atPSC 2009?" After that the officials fromBrightSpyre stressed on the need for practicalknowledge, in addition to book knowledge. Theystressed the need of a well rounded personalityand good communication skills for impressingthe employers. On the third day of IEEE PSC2009, Ravendar Lal , Om Paraksh and Rafeeltalked about generating funds followed by WIECongress. Mr. Amir Zahoor (SSR, IEEE LahoreSection) conducted an IEEE LeadershipTraining Workshop whereas Arsalan Bajwadiscussed how to handle finances of events.Certificates were distributed amongst the IEEEPakistan Student Congress delegates.

The closing ceremony was held at the SCEEAuditorium, NUST Islamabad. Dr. MuhammadAkbar (An IEEE Fellow) and Member of IEEEIslamabad Section ExCom. TheQuality Enhancement and AccreditationDirectorate ensures that international standardsare applied for measuring the capabilities andperformance of the faculty and updating theeducational facilities according to the demandsof the 21st Century. Cultural ShowReported by: Mr. Ulusyar TareenOn the 17th of June 2009, BS(BA) students of

BUITEMS organized a cultural show in the citycampus. The students performed different actsand skits to show the diverse Pashtoon andBaloch cultures. All the students were in theirtraditional dresses, depicting the cultural side ofBalochistan and its people. In this cultural showthe topics included:

o Cuisines of Balochistan o Pashto Folktales o Balochi Folktales o Pashto Music o Balochi music o Pashtoon Weddings o Handicrafts of Balochistan o Nomads in Balochistan

Each group had three participants; first a 5minute presentation was given then a 10minstage show of the topic. The participantsappeared in folk dresses of Balochistan. Thestudents decorated the stage of the auditoriumwith different handicrafts. In the presentation ofcuisines the group had brought differentdelicious foods, whereas in the wedding'spresentation real 'Attan' was performed. Thestudents of BSBA organized this event in just oneday.

The meeting startedwith the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran,after which the Honorable Vice Chancellordescribed the status of the University with respectto the progress made both academically andadministratively. He also highlighted theobjectives of the meeting. Fun and enjoyment are very important inmaintaining a fresh and healthy environment inany organization. A food festival was arrangedat BUITEMS City Campus by the ManagementSciences Department on June 19, 2009. "Suchactivities and events help in improving theacademic environment", said the ViceChancellor, Engr. Ahmed Farooq Bazai. Heemphasized the importance of co-curricularactivities because they not only perk up theenvironment but also bring people together in afriendly milieu. The Vice Chancellor appreciatedthe efforts of students in arranging the festivaland looked forward to other similar events in

future. The food stalls at the festival offered alarge variety of dishes and drinks. The visitorshad the choice of going for continental or fastfood according to their liking.

BUITEMS along with imparting qual ityeducation provides opportunities to its studentsto take part activities to motivate their social zealand build up their confidence in every field of life.In the series of co-curricular activities a specialquiz show was held at PTV Quetta center aboutthe life of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto,which was telecast on June 21, 2009 (thebirthday of Mohtarma) on PTV Bolan .Studentsfrom many institutions took part in the quizcompetition. BUITEMS had two teams. Team A,and team C, whereas team B comprised thestudents of Govt. Gir ls College QuettaCantonment .BUITEMS teams were coordinatedby Director Student Affairs, Mr. Ahmad ShahDurrani. Renowned resource personslike, Prof. Muhammad Aslam Adeeb (IslamiaUniversity Bahawalpur), Dr Jan-e-Alam Khakiand Dr. Grame Kane (Agha Khan University,Institute for Educational Development),Dr.Iftikharuddin Khawaja( Director IqraUniversity, Quetta), Mr. Zahid Majeed (AIOU,Islamabad), Dr. Hamid Rafique khan Khatak(Dean Business School), Dr. Sohaila Javed(Dean, NUML), and Dr. Noreen Mirza(educationist/ Corporate Trainer) providedvaluable training to the participants.Besides them, guest speakers Dr. MukhtarAhmed (Chairman LID) , Dr. Riaz Qureshi(Advisor HEC), Dr.Ansar (Corporate trainer),etc., were also invited to share their knowledgeand experiences. One day training workshop on "EffectiveTeaching Methods" was organized for facultymembers on June 25, 2009. Prof. Barkat Ali,Chairman Department Management Scienceswas the resource person for this trainingworkshop. Thirty two faculty members from allfive faculties attended. Being an experiencedteacher, Prof. Barkat Ali stressed upon thepragmatic aspect of teaching while talking aboutthe various methods and techniques of teaching.He stressed that a teacher must not only havecommand over the subject but also develop andcomprehend student's behaviour along with theirpotential for growth. The honorable ViceChancellor, Engr. Mr. Ahmad Shah Durranienlightened the audience about variousco-curricular activities being held atBUITEMS under the auspices ofDirectorate of Student Affairs. Ananimated movie of the seven principles of RedCross Society namely humanity, impartiality,neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unityand universality was shown. The seminarconcluded with a question and answer session.The session was basically conducted toencourage the youth a volunteer their servicesat the time of crisis. At the end forms weredistributed among the interested students toregister themselves as members of RC/RCsociety. Six students were chosen for a three-day training at Pakistan Red Crescent SocietyBalochistan and first aid kits were given to themat the end of training.

Spearman correlation testand l inear regression analysis wasconducted.Results: There were 219 males and 71females with mean age of 46±10.5 yearsand mean body mass index of 23.5 ±3.8.Mean plasma homocysteine levels inPakistani normal adults were found to be17.95±8.4 mol/l. Mean concentrations ofplasma/serum folate, vitamin B12and PLPwere found to be 5±3.9 ng/ml, 522±296 pg/ml and 21.6±14 nmol/l, respectively. Serum/plasma levels of folate, vitamin B12and PLPwere negatively correlated with plasmahomocysteine (rho coefficient=-0.367,p<0.001; -0.173, p=0.004; -0.185, p=0.002,respectively). Serum folate and plasmaPLP levels were inversely related withplasma homocysteine, adjusted for gender,age, smoking and body mass index(p<0.001 and p=0.003, respectively).Percent deficiency values of folate, vitaminB6and vitamin B12were 39.7%, 52.8% and6.6% respectively.Conclusion: The high levels of plasmahomocysteine could indicate a reason formass micronutrient supplementation toprevent the high incidence of cardiovasculardisease observed in Pakistani population.
