31 August, 2015 Ref: 003/15-16 1 Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds. This year we will begin our Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds initiative in order to make sure children are in peak condition for learning and life long growth. We will run assemblies and fun activities to raise awareness that what we eat and drink affects how we feel. Mr Riddell has already been working with Deli Fresh, our lunch provider, advising them on the food they offer and we now need your help. Our aim is for all students to be eating healthy, nutritious and balanced snacks and lunches. Packaged crisps, sweets, biscuits and sweetened drinks all have a very high added salt and sugar content and are not the types of foods we will be encouraging as part of a nutritious snack or lunch in school. Water is all your children need to rehydrate and we have many water fountains across the school to refill water bottles. We will soon be running parent and helper workshops to support this initiative. KJS NEWS Success for Every Child ACTION: Make a lantern! Sign up for workshops. Apply for 2016/17 Y1 places from tomorrow. Year Ahead Meeting Thank you to those parents who were able to make the Year Ahead Meetings this week. Thank you also for all the positive feedback which is much appreciated by the teachers who spend more than twelve hours in work on these occasions. I hope you found the evening informative. During the leadership presentation we talked about some of our key priorities this year: Developing links across the Kowloon Learning Campus in order to further benefit all students’ experience. The consolidation and development of Learner Agency, where we raise the expectation for our students to become more active participants in their learning. The introduction of Growth Mindset for all - the understanding that we can ‘grow’ our brains if our learning stretches us beyond our comfort zone. The launch of our Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds initiative which will start in earnest after the October half term. In coming weeks more information will follow to inform you about each of these initiatives but I did promise to send a link for those expressing a link about Growth Mindset: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pN34FNbOKXc

HK Water Scare As you may know, recently there have been reports of high lead content in domestic water supplies at some Hong Kong housing estates.

Over the summer ESF proactively took water samples from 30 fresh drinking water sources at KJS, then tested the samples in an independent laboratory for traces of lead, cadmium, chromium and nickel. The tests were done in accordance with international standards.

I n l i ne w i t h t he l a tes t HK Government criteria (2015), I am pleased to tell you that the test results for the water supply at KJS are well below the allowable limits.

Assembly Performers

Thank you to Naomi and Carson for their fabulous performances in the upper school assembly this week. If your child has a practised piece they would be interested in sharing with the school they should inform Mr Davenport.

Well done Marissa! We are so proud of Marissa who was the third runner-up in the SCMP Young Post's 2015 Summer Story competition. You can read Marissa’s story here:

http://yp.scmp.com/over-to-you/poems-and-short-stories/article/98201/clued-factory-work

If your child has something achieved success out of school please do let us know, we are keen to share and celebrate their effort and achievement.

Ambassadors for the school

On Friday we hosted the Hong Kong SEN Network meeting, with more than sixty highly skilled professionals joining us in the library. My thanks go to Jacqui Stewart for organising such a s successful event, to both Jacqui and Mary Briggs who gave informative keynote speeches and to the entire KJS IN team for their contribution. At the end of the morning Rohan, Jared, Andy, Chapman, Zac, Joseph, Alex, Marcus, Akash, Tanay and Carson acted as tour guides for participants and proved themselves as true ambassadors for KJS.

Student Voice We believe that Student Voice plays a crucial part in school development. Elections are starting to happen for students who wish to be part of the Student Council. The Council will play an important role in helping us make KJS better than ever before. We are looking for students who show excellent communication skills, who are able to be open-minded and to see situations from other people’s perspective.
