Our Virtue for Weeks 5-7 of Term 3 is…
Dear God,
If I cannot be brilliant, let me be kind.
If I cannot change the world,
let me inspire just one other to do so.
If I cannot give away riches, let me be loving.
Let me be known for kindness, for it is the greatest glory.
Amen

Dear Parents/Carers,
Last Saturday evening twenty-three candidates from our Parish, including fourteen
students from MTCC, completed the final stage of their Rite of their Initiation into the
Catholic Faith through the Sacrament of Confirmation. This sacrament has the effect
of increasing, deepening, and strengthening the grace of God given to us at our baptism.
Confirmation fills us with the power of the Holy Spirit – the same Spirit the Apostles
received at Pentecost. Congratulations to all the newly Confirmed and their families.
May the Gifts and Fruits of the Spirit give you the strength you need to be the amazing
people God created you to be.
Many of the social issues we deal with everyday relate to incidents that occur while
students are not at school - and the majority of these are linked to social media and other
forms of online communication. Do you know exactly what your child is doing when they
are on your (or their own) phone, iPad, laptop/desktop? Are you aware of the various
platforms children can use to communicate with people they know – and some they have
never met? Generally, the answer from parents is ‘No’. To assist us all in developing a
better understanding of what young people SAY, SEE and DO online, we will be hosting
a Think U Know Parent Session on Wednesday 12 September from 6pm -7.30pm.
Please place this date in your diary as it is a must do for every parent from Year 3 to 7.
We wish our Junior School Choir, Year 7 Christian Dance Group and Year 7 Flute Duet
all the very best for their upcoming performances in the 2018 Catholic Performing Arts
Festival. We thank Mrs Geraldine Williams (Junior School Choir), Mrs Amanda Day
(Christian Dance) and Mrs Sarah Gaynor (Flute) for their excellent work with the
students during the lead up these performances.
This coming Wednesday is the Feast of the Assumption, a holy day of obligation. Mass
will be held at the Parish House at 9am and 6pm – You are all most welcome to attend!
Thank you to Mrs Louise Rimmer for organising Science Incursions for all PP to Year
6 students during Science Week. We know the children will enjoy the experiences on
offer and learn so much too!

We sincerely thank Baldivis MLA, Reece Whitby, for
supporting our request for an extension of the 40km
zone on Eighty Road to beyond the College boundary
and for ensuring a positive response from Main Roads
WA and the Minister for Transport. Rita Saffioti.
The extension is expected to be in place by October,
following the relocation of electronic speed limit signs.
“This is an acknowledgement of our growing school
and local community and a necessary measure to enable
us to meet our highest priority; the safety of our
students,” explained Alison Romagnolo, Assistant
Associate Principal.
A BIG thank you also to Mrs Helen McClenaghan who submitted applications for Water-Wise grants for both our Junior School and
Middle School earlier in the year. There were only 37 grants awarded throughout WA with MTCC awarded two of them. In his letter
of congratulations, Reece Whitby informed us that there was only one other school in the Baldivis electorate that was successful with
their submission. We look forward to the many special resources and learning opportunities these funds will provide.
Our MTCC Inter-House Athletics Carnival will be held this Wednesday, 15 August, on the College grounds (weather permitting). The
success of this event is dependent on everything going to plan and the co-operation of everyone in attendance from students to staff and
most importantly parents and spectators. Last year’s carnival was made more difficult than it had to be when some parents decided they
would not stay within the spectator boundaries, came into areas where the children were competing/being supervised after being told this
was not to happen and refusing to do the right thing when approached by staff. We urge everyone to be mindful of all instructions given
and to work with us, positively, to ensure a wonderful time is had by all. The events will be presented in a Tabloid format with the focus
for the day being on maximum participation and House spirit. Please note that Sausage Sizzle orders will be accepted up until Monday
morning.
May we all seek to live the coming days in a beautiful, generous and caring way.

Year 7
During a recent Year 7 liturgy, Father Daniel blessed special
El Salvadorian Crosses that were later placed in learning
spaces and offices throughout the Middle School building.
The origins of these crosses lies back in the 1960’s and 70’s,
when people fled the brutal persecutions in El Salvador and
lived in refugee camps in neighbouring countries. There they
tried to reconcile their pain and horror with their deeply-held
Christian faith. What they came up with was very practical
and therapeutic: to think of all the things that brought hope
and meaning to their lives - children, a sunrise, scripture,
their village, etc and to paint them in vivid colours onto
wooden crosses.
The results are not only strikingly beautiful, they are also a
moving expression of the ways pain, sorrow, hope, devotion
and worship become connected in the cross of Jesus.

Virtue - Caring
Are We Raising Great Kids? - Make caring for others a priority!
Research shows that parents tend to highlight their children’s happiness and achievements over their children’s concern for
others. Yet, this should be a priority as children need to learn to balance their needs with the needs of others, whether it’s
passing the ball to a teammate or standing up for friend who is being bullied.
They need to hear from parents that caring for others is a top priority. A big part of that is holding children to high ethical
expectations, such as honouring their commitments, even if they don’t want to. For example, before kids quit a sports team,
choir, or a friendship, we should ask them to consider their obligations to the group or the friend and encourage them to work
out problems before quitting.
Instead of saying to your children: “The most important thing is that you’re happy,” say “The most important thing is that
you are kind.” Ensure that children always address others respectfully, even when they’re tired, distracted, or angry and
emphasise caring , yourself, when you interact with other key adults in your children’s lives.
It’s never too late to become a caring person, but it won’t happen on its own. Children need to practice caring for others,
express gratitude for those who care for them and contribute positively to others’ lives. Studies show that people who are in
the habit of expressing gratitude are more likely to be helpful, generous, compassionate, and forgiving—and they’re also
more likely to be happy and healthy.
Learning to be caring is like learning to play a sport or an instrument. Daily repetition—whether it’s a helping a friend with
class work, helping out around the house, or having a classroom job—help make caring second nature and develop and hone
children’s caregiving capacities. Learning gratitude involves regularly practising it.
Don’t reward your child for every act of helpfulness, such as clearing the dinner table. We should expect our children to help
around the house, with siblings, and with neighbours and only reward uncommon/unexpected acts of kindness. Discuss with
your child about the caring and uncaring acts they see on television and about acts of justice and injustice they might witness
or hear about in the news. Make gratitude a daily ritual at dinnertime, bedtime, in the car, or on a family walk. Express
thanks for those who care and give to us and others in large and small ways.
Children learn ethical values by watching the actions of adults they respect. They also learn values by thinking through ethical
dilemmas with adults, e.g. “Should I invite a new neighbour to my birthday party when my best friend doesn’t like her?”.
Being a moral role model and mentor means that we need to practice honesty, fairness, and caring ourselves. But it doesn’t
mean being perfect all the time. For our children to be able to respect and trust us, we need to acknowledge our mistakes and
flaws. We also need to respect children’s thinking and listen to their perspectives, demonstrating to them how we want them
to engage others. Model caring for others by doing community service at least once a month. Even better, do this service
with your child. Give your child an ethical dilemma at dinner or ask your child about dilemmas they’ve faced.

Sustainability
This week our Sustainability Area has been extremely fortunate to receive some great donations. I would like to thank
Lilliana and Finnley Ruffino for donating the ground coffee from their Cafe on The Dam. The worms will really love it!
We were also lucky to receive some blue metal for a pathway from Mr Ian Tammen (Luke and Max's dad). Thank you,
Ian, for unloading the trailer as well! Waldecks Garden Centre in Melville donated three blueberry bushes. Thank you,
John, and your team, we really appreciate your generosity.
A big thank you also to everyone who supported the successful Market Stall this week. The Green Team did a super job
running the stall, which made $262. This money will go towards buying food and hay for the chickens and some plants
for our 'Butterfly Garden' that the children are designing.
We recently celebrated National Tree Day by planting two fruit trees near the Sustainability Area. Thank you to the
wonderful Green Team who dug the holes and planted the trees.
Our children have enjoyed their time in the Sustainability Area this week. The Year One classes mulched around their
potato bushes and removed all the bugs eating the plants. The Year Three class were planting seeds in different
environments and will observe which seeds grow the quickest. They have also planted some seeds and seedlings in the
greenhouse. Year Four Blue made the beautiful bees wax lunch wraps. The Year Six children collected the castings from
the worm farms and added it to the vegetable gardens. Many children have enjoyed caring for the chickens, feeding the
fish and meeting a frog who has found, in our Sustainability Area, a new place to call home!
We have a Plastic Free Raffle, which will be drawn on the 15th August at the Sports Carnival. Tickets are $2 each or 3
for $5. We will be selling tickets on Monday and Tuesday before and after school this week.

FOR
Think U Know provides information on the technologies young people use, the challenges they may face, and importantly, how they can be overcome.
Presenters aim to provide parents/carers and teachers with the tools to create a safer online environment for young people in your care.
The presentation covers what young people SAY, SEE and DO online.
Topics include social media reputation management, cyberbullying, ‘sexting’, online grooming, online gaming, inappropriate content, privacy management, identity theft, how to protect your devices, and how to report matters when things go wrong.
The program bridges the knowledge gap between adults and young people so that everyone has an understanding of the roles they play and what they can do if something serious happens online.

All Years 4-6 students are invited to join our new Junior Youth Group (as yet to be named).
Parents will need to be committed, but we do have a capable facilitator and older Secondary School students to be senior leaders or mentors.
It is envisaged that the group will meet every 2 or 4 weeks, and that activities will develop over time.
The timing of this gathering could be changed to suit families as we go along.
All are welcome - we look forward to you joining in the fun.
