Year Group NewsYear 3- Miss Moakes

Year 3 have been learning about deforestation in the rainforest and the effect it has on the animals, plants and people that live there.  In maths we have been focusing on fractions and understanding how to work out a fraction of an amount, for example 1/4 of 12.  In English the children have enjoyed becoming experts on their own, made up animal and writing a non-chronological report about that animal.  We are very impressed with how competent the children are becoming with their iPads, including their ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues as they occur. We are pleased to see that this is helping them to become more independent learners.

Year 6- Miss Johnson Year 5- Mrs Hooper

Year 4- Mrs Fitzgibbon

What an exciting couple of weeks we've had in the lead up to PGL but we've also had to work very hard to get everything done. In English, we've been writing spooky stories and we have been so impressed with how much the children have come on in their writing. Here is an extract from Archie Charles’ story: It was a dark stormy night and the lightning flashed with rage. A boy sat alone in the rain. The stale smell of a graveyard filled the murky air as the boy sat on a stone. Ominous trees surrounded the grave like an army and ebony shadows created by the moon reflected on the ground.

In maths, we've been revisiting multiplication and we've used leaves in science to help us learn about classification of living things. We've also had a great

time watching the Quantum theatre show, celebrating World Book Day and taking part in

Sport's Relief.

Y5 have hit the ground running after half term and have been getting to grips with our new English unit Macbeth. They loved being rude to each other with insults such as “You onion eyed, pigeon brained horse back breaker!” See if you can come up with your own at home. They have also loved the challenge of changing well known pop songs from Shakespearian to modern day English. We have also continued learning about the Shang Dynasty and comparing them to other ancient civilisations such as the Egyptians and Greeks. Finally, Year 5, after weeks of drawing and painting dragonflies are gearing up to take the project to new heights. Watch this space!.

It's been a busy old time in year 6 this past week with students organising World Book Day trails, reading with the infant children and organising sports activities during their lunch hour in aid of Sports Relief. These activities are all part of developing our leadership skills with our year 6's and they have been truly excellent so far! We have also started our unit on CAMs in technology where the pupils will be building their skills in accurate measuring , sawing and designing to produce a moveable toy with a mechanism. We can also announce the summer production will be Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies and all year 6's have been auditioning this week and will then be seen in call backs as we try to work out which role to put them all in and as they are such a talented year group it will be hard to decide!

Challenge: Can you work out which song this is?

Sports UpdateSports Hall Athletics County Finals With the year 3/4 and 5/6 teams already winning the local Ascot and Maidenhead area final, on Friday 6th March both our teams travelled to Newbury to sprint, jump and throw as best as they could to be in with a chance of a medal. Firstly the year 3/4 team competed in the morning session in the closest S.H.A county final we have ever been involved in. Just a small gap of 14 points separated the top 4 teams in what was such an enthralling and entertaining day. Much to FP’s disappointment we finished in 4th place just outside the medals. An unbelievable 4 points only stopped us from claiming a bronze medal. Mrs Winter and Mr Kemp are proud of all the efforts made by this year 3 and 4 team. A special menNon and huge thank you to Jen Francis who came along on Friday to help out with the team and show her support. Onto the year 5/6 sports hall team who were determined to bring home a medal. Throughout the aRernoon session the track performances were certainly at their finest, with FP being in the top 3 of every race except for just the one. A special menNon to the boys team who absolutely smashed it out the park in the over/under and obstacle races, winning them both very comfortably. Also the epic 6 lap paarlauf race, run by our two girls Anna Greenland and Elisabeth Madden was amazing! Furze PlaU finished in a superb 1st PLACE! This meant for the second year running we managed to bring home the GOLD medals once again. Mrs Tisshaw and Mr Kemp were leR for words when they realised their team had won the compeNNon by a staggering 38 points, which is some incredible gap to the next team in 2nd. It gives me immense pride to say that Furze PlaU Junior School are back to back Sports Hall AthleNc County Champions! A huge congratulaNon to all the girls and boys involved, as they certainly trained and worked hard to become outstanding winners!

Football Competition News In heavy wind and rain, a team of year 4 footballers went to Altwood for the Maidenhead schools competition on Thursday 5th March. A thumping 4-0 win in the first match was followed by three draws which left us second in the group and so we couldn’t go through to the semi-finals. There were some great individual performances and despite the rain, lots of fun was had! By Mr Foreshew

Football Team News In a double fixture on Wednesday 26th February, the B team footballers ran out 2-0 and 5-0 winners in two dominant performances against Waltham St Lawrence and Cookham Rise. Against two physical teams, we out-passed and out-battled the opposition and deserved to win both matches by more goals. So far this term, it’s three wins out of three! The A team played Wessex on Thursday 27th February. Despite dominating in possession and a number of shots on goal, the team frustratingly came away with a 1-1 draw. Written by Mr Foreshew & Mr Wallace

Girls Football - Mr Kemp On Thursday 12th March FPJS competed in a girls’ football compeNNon at FPSS. This year the tournament had an amazing twelve teams parNcipaNng. Although we were in a very tough group, the compeNNon started off very well with a fantasNc 0-0 draw against Courthouse, who later in the day went on to win the compeNNon. However with another 3 draws, all 0-0, and just the one convincing win, our girls were not able to finish in the top two placings of the group to progress to the semi-finals. Mr Kemp noted some very strong individual performances from Ella-Rose Collins and Tabby Gie. Overall not losing a game at such a compeNNve tournament is sNll a brilliant achievement so well done girls!

Sports UpdateSports Relief Week

Well done to everyone who contributed to raising money for Sports Relief Week. Thanks to your generous donations, we raised a brilliant £250 for the charity. Our Y6 were in charge of running exciting sporting activities during lunchtime which included golf, skipping, running, tennis and basketball and many more. For every activity completed, children earned points for their house. The winning team overall at the end of the week was Romans, with 458 points, followed by Danes with 372, Normans with 327 and Vikings with 313.

The Sports Relief assembly on Monday was run by Mr Kemp and Mrs Tisshaw, who talked about how the money we raised will be used to help many people both in the UK and the wider world. We

learned a new song for the assembly, written especially for the event called “Game On”. You can see us perform it by clicking on the QR code. Many thanks to Mrs Tisshaw and Mr Kemp for all their hard work organising such a brilliant week!

Ethiopia Link School FPJS has recently set up a link school in Ethiopia in order to widen our children’s understanding of what life is like for children in a very different part of the world.

On 3rd March, the charity Link Ethiopia visited us in assembly to introduce our link school “Kembele 02” which is located in Gondar, north east Ethiopia.

The informative talk was followed by a whole school lesson which explored the similarities and differences between our school and Kembele 02, plus a chance to try out some Ethiopian shoulder dancing!

As a school community, learning about a school which has many challenges makes us appreciate how lucky we are at FPJS. For example, at Kembele 02, only have 4 taps for water for all 253 pupils.

The future aims of this project are to: - Raise money to support the

school - Provide a link to send pupils

writing, etc - Provide our pupils with

greater awareness of the differences between us and a very different culture.

500 Words

Competition Congratulations to all the pupils who entered the Radio 2 500 words competition recently, following some top tips given out in assembly. All pupils who entered the competition were given a certificate of congratulations for taking part. We wish all of our entrants good luck with the next stage of the competition- fingers crossed we have a finalist at FPJS!

Rotary Club Writing Winner Congratulations to Y6 pupil Charles Taylor for being chosen as the winner for the Y6 Essay writing competition. Charles was invited to the Holiday Inn, Maidenhead to hear his piece read aloud, written in the voice of one of the ugly sisters. He also received a book voucher, worth £15. Well done Charles!

Introducing... Furze Platt Juniors would like to welcome Emma Hawkins to our office team. Emma is already known to many of you as she has a daughter in Y5. Emma will commence her role as Finance Manager on 30th March. She will be working closely with Mrs Nagiel, Mrs Fraser and Mrs Tanner to support the office team. We hope Emma will settle into her new role and become an important part of our team!. Our restructuring of the office team has come about as Julie Nagiel, our Business Manager will be retiring at the end of the term, after an amazing 20 years of service at the school. More information to follow in the next Newsletter!

Quantum Theatre visit Y3 and Y4 pupils were in for a treat when the Quantum Theatre visited us on 5th March to perform the play “The calculating Mr One”. The play engaged our pupils in their maths thinking, enhancing their understanding of place value and the four functions in a most entertaining way, in the style of a Sherlock Holmes comedy mystery. The children were enthralled throughout the interactive performance, which was a great chance for them to deepen their understanding of recently taught maths skills.

NSPCC Thanks Well done to all the children who took part in the fund raising event for the NSPCC. The children had great fun completing the exercise activities in their PE lessons to raise money for such an important cause. The final amount raised was £1327.40 which was phenomenal! Special congratulations to Class FK for raising the most money in the school.
