Newsletter 26-2017 Thursday 24 th August This week saw two of our learning communities participate in ‘incursions’ related to this term’s overall theme of I Am A PHYSICIST. Physics involves the study of matter and its motion and behavior through space and time, along with related concepts such as energy and force. The main goal of physics is to understand how the universe behaves. Firstly, the 1/2s had a visit from Supreme Incursions. Students were involved in a rotation of four activities; Designing a Billy Cart, The Workshop, Building Billy Carts in small groups and Driving a Billy Cart. They tailored our sessions to suit our focus of Simple Machines, Force and Motion & Teamwork’. The 5/6 Learning Community had a visit from a company called Craft Power where they had to build a wooden plane with a battery-operated propeller. Their focus with inventions is on electrical circuits so this allowed them to put the knowledge they have gained into practice through a fun and engaging activity. Today the 5/6 Learning Community headed off to Legoland which offers hands-on learning across the curriculum, including science, mathematics, language, arts, technology, and engineering design, while building and reinforcing collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills. The students will be able to explore a variety of attractions ranging from ‘Miniland’, ‘4D Cinema’, ‘Merlin’s Apprentice Ride’ and ‘Lego factory tour’ just to name a few. The students participated in a 45 minute workshop titled ‘Merry-Go-Round’. A fun, hands-on way to get students excited about engineering, design, and mathematics.

Newsletter 26-2017

Thursday 24th

August

This week saw two of our learning communities participate in

‘incursions’ related to this term’s overall theme of

I Am A PHYSICIST. Physics involves the study of

matter and its motion and behavior through space and time,

along with related concepts such as energy and force. The

main goal of physics is to understand how the universe

behaves.

Firstly, the 1/2s had a visit from Supreme Incursions. Students

were involved in a rotation of four activities; Designing a

Billy Cart, The Workshop, Building Billy Carts in small

groups and Driving a Billy Cart. They tailored our sessions to

suit our focus of Simple Machines, Force and Motion & Teamwork’.

The 5/6 Learning Community had a visit from a company called Craft Power where they had to build a wooden

plane with a battery-operated propeller. Their focus with inventions is on

electrical circuits so this

allowed them to put the

knowledge they have

gained into practice through

a fun and engaging activity.

Today the 5/6 Learning

Community headed off to

Legoland which offers

hands-on learning across

the curriculum, including

science, mathematics,

language, arts, technology,

and engineering design, while building and reinforcing collaboration,

communication, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills. The

students will be able to explore a variety of attractions ranging from ‘Miniland’, ‘4D Cinema’, ‘Merlin’s

Apprentice Ride’ and ‘Lego factory tour’ just to name a few.

The students participated in a 45 minute workshop titled ‘Merry-Go-Round’. A fun, hands-on way to get

students excited about engineering, design, and mathematics.

The 3/4s will be heading off to Latitude in coming weeks as their focus with inventions is on levers and

pulleys. The students will be looking at the use of levers and pulleys in adventure activities, specifically

locking pulleys. The students will participate in hosted activities to ensure safety. This excursion also links with

their previous topic of ‘Our Extraordinary Bodies’ where the students learnt about their bodies and how to stay

healthy.

I look forward to hearing about these excursions and seeing some photos that we will include in next week’s

newsletter.

Over the past week, some of our senior sport teams have participated in tournaments for both AFL and

basketball. I know they have put a lot of time into training and working on their skills and they certainly

proudly represented our school. Please see the report attached to this newsletter for the details. Well done to

all the teams!

Finally, a reminder about our Book Character Dress Up Day

on Monday 4th

September. Come along dressed as your

favourite book character and join us for a parade in the gym!

We look forward to seeing all the great costumes.
