Principal’s Report
Awards Night
Each year we celebrate the success of ourstudents in their learning endeavoursthrough an Awards Night featuring thepresentation of certificates, medallions andsome cash prizes.
Awards Night 2016 featured an extensiveparade of talented students from James Nash High whoseachievements in academic, cultural, sporting and citizenshipwere publicly acknowledged. It was a credit to this communitythat our young people have shown such dedication andresultant excellence in the many and varied areas at the school.I commend all students who were recognised for theirexemplary performance during the ceremony.
Special thanks go to our 2016 Senior Student Leaders whoacted as Masters of Ceremony for this prestigious event.Helana Chippindall, Mikaela Hourigan, Matthew Hurrell and AlexWilson have done us proud in their duties yet again in 2016.
I also acknowledge the support of our sponsors; the LadiesAuxiliary who provided so much to the school throughout theyear and who provided supper on the night; Mrs Greinke, MsD’Arcy, Ms Rackley, Mr Francis, Ms Luke, Mrs Morrow, MrSmith and Miss Thurlow and many other staff and students
responsible for the overall organisation and success of theevent.
This year, 13 students nominated for the 2016 Senior Studentleadership positions. The calibre of nominees was exceptionaland the selection panel experienced considerable difficulty inseparating the candidates and selecting the final 4 positions. It is with great pleasure that I publish the names of our 2017leaders.

Attendance
School absenteeism can impact significantly on students'learning and wellbeing.
Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendanceis associated, on average, with higher student achievement.Additionally, attending school every day helps children to buildsocial and emotional skills such as communication, teamworkand resilience.
Under the law, you must make sure your child is enrolled andattends school on all school days unless there is a reasonableexcuse. Schools must monitor attendance of students andfollow up with parents and caregivers any unexplainedabsences.
If your child does not want to go to school, or is missingschool without you knowing, contact your school immediatelyfor assistance and support.
At James Nash SHS we:
Good standing and Awards Trips
As part of our good standing policy students need to maintaina minimum of 90% attendance as well as having all absences
• monitor student attendance
• notify you if your child has an unexplained absenceas soon as practicable on the day of your child'sabsence with a txt message. Parents can reply to txtmessages with the reason for the student’s absence.Follow-up letter are sent on a weekly basis forstudents who have 3 or more unexplained absences. When completed these can be returned to schooland given to either Student Services or Care classteachers.
• use effective teaching strategies to engage your childin learning
• help you with strategies to encourage your child togo to school and provide support for families via theschools Guidance officer and Youth supportCoordinator.

explained to be eligible to attend the rewards trips at the end ofthe year.
Current Year 10 and 11 students need to have 90% or betterand all absences explained to be eligible for unsupervised studyfrom the start of next year - 2017.

Gold Rush Parade and Lady Mayoress Concert2016
This month Gympie has celebrated the Annual Gold RushFestival and to help kick off the celebrations the James NashConcert Band along with the Human Powered Vehicle studentswere involved in the Gold Rush Parade.
Our band marched proudly along Mary Street playing ThePennsylvania Polka whilst the HPV students peddled their bikesto the delight of the crowd. As always the students proudlyrepresented their school and were dressed to impress. We also
9
had student, teacher and parent volunteers marching alongsidewith promotional goodies for prospective students. It was anenjoyable afternoon and we thank all who came along.
Closing the Gold Rush on Friday the 21st was the annual LadyMayoress Concert. Our school’s reputation preceded us as thestudents were requested to play by Griffith University along withthe Young Conservatorium of music students. The James NashStage Band opened with stand up applause from the audience. They were minus their conductors and had to go it alone – suchprofessionals. Oh I tell a lie, Mr Edwards did step up to conductthem through their warm up! There is a lot we can learn fromwatching Brad Smith.
After interval the ACA Choir took the stage and as always wereextremely well received. Led by Naomi Thurlow, their set wasa mix of contemporary, gospel and fun. Last but certainly notleast was the Young Conservatorium Orchestra and I mentionit because two of our fabulous strings players were asked lastminute to join. Grace R and Samantha M found out only a daybefore and didn’t even have time to learn pieces before goingon stage to perform. Of course they nailed it, all our studentsdid. You are all fabulous and James Nash really appreciate allyour hard work and dedication.

The Technology Challenge involved over 3000 students andinvolves the HPV, Robotics, Smiley push carts for Primaryschools, Co2 Cars and solar powered cars and boats. Ourstudents entered the category for HPV`s a 24 hour race forHuman Powered Vehicles.
The teams finished mid field with 148 teams competing thisyear. We completed 325 laps of the circuit. The vehicles ranreliably throughout the race with just flat tyres and one race rollover. The rider was a little shaken but recovered and continuedin the event.

Readers Cup Comptetition
Last Thursday evening, 20 October, our Year 7 Reader’s Cupteam travelled to the Sunshine Coast to compete in the regionalcompetition against 18 very competitive Secondary Schools.Mikayla L, Jill R, Scarlett M and Aliyah M have spent the last 10weeks reading the 6 prescribed books for the competition (byno means an easy feat).
The girls participated in 6 rounds of questions in the heats, having to recall some very obscure knowledge! For example:“What is the latin word for ‘beetle’ and what is the directtranslation?” Answer: “Coleoptera: Meaning Sheathed Wing”.To throw a further challenge at them, they had to pay particularattention to their spelling, punctuation and grammar in theirresponses (any wrong spelling, meant no points) – thiscompetition was far more than just reading!
Our team fought hard and placed First in their heat with 52points, advancing them to the Finals. Up against 4 otherschools, the points were wiped clean and the girls tackledanother 6 rounds of questions that were much harder than theheats (some of the questions even stumped the teachers whohad also read the books!).
With the final points tallied, winners were announced and prizesawarded. Our Year 7 Reader’s Cup Team took out Runner’sUp; a very convincing 2nd Place and hot on the heels of theWinners. Each of our team members received 4 novels (of theirchoice) each; an engraved medallion; a $25 gift certificate tobuy more books; a certificate of participation; and a book-packgift for our School Library.
10
We would like to say extend a massive thank you to ourReader’s Cup Mentor Coaches, Lahni, Matilda and Elora whoworked with our Year 7 team the entire way. They took on astrong leadership role by reading books, quizzing and testingour team, and giving helpful advice and support throughout theentire process leading up to this competition.
We would like to also say a huge thank you to the Parentsand Students who attended the evening to support our team. This is an incredible testament to the dedication, commitmentand high performance of these students and of our Schoolas a whole. An amazing achievement; congratulations Year 7Reader’s Cup Team!
