KURUNJANG PRIMARY SCHOOL ~ “Learning Together” NEWSLETTER 23 - 2019 Thursday 15 th August, 2019 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Just a reminder to all families who received the link to complete the parent opinion survey last week. The last day for being able to access the survey is this Sunday the 18 th August. Thank you to all those who are completing the survey; we look forward to your input into future planning for our school. I will announce the winners of the family Reading Cinema passes in next week’s newsletter. Stay tuned. The August census continued this week with information forwarded to the Department of Education including Anaphylaxis and Allergies, Student Support Services, English as an Additional Language, Koorie Outcomes, Languages Education, Specialized Programs, Student Voice and Participation, Students with Disabilities, Transition to Primary School and Secondary School, and Digital Learning. On Monday and Tuesday students in years 3-6 participated in the Melton Primary School’s Sports Association (MPSSA) district athletics. At the end of Monday we were leading in the track events. We were very excited when we maintained this position at the end of Tuesday’s field events. We congratulate all our athletes who participated and to Mrs Helen Craig for her training of the children and her organisation of the district athletics. This Friday, the Junior School Council is organising a gold coin donation sports colour day. Money raised will go toward one of our students Detroit Williams who has been successful in state finals for rugby and will be competing in the national competition in Canberra. Please help support Detroit by donating a gold coin and allowing your children to dress in a sports uniform, or wear an item of sports clothing or colour. Last Friday the year 1/2 team held the Big Night In. The year 1 and 2 students enjoyed games and pizza and ice cream dinner before the year 1s went home. The year 2s then enjoyed a movie, popcorn and hot chocolate before sleeping the night. It was a terrific evening and morning for the students. A big thank you to all the 1/2 teachers and other teachers and education support staff who attended to ensure the children had a wonderful time. Next week is Celebration of Learning week. The theme is ‘Reading is My Secret Power’. Events throughout the week will include daily book brainteasers, whole school story, maths activities and various lunchtime activities culminating in a dress up parade on Friday morning and the lunchtime treasure hunt where the children follow written clues to identify various staff power character costumes around the yard. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Friday is also the day of the official opening of the Kurunjang Community Hub beginning with the Master Chef demonstration and finishing with a family movie night at 6.30pm. Please see the attached flyer as bookings are essential for the various activities during the day. The official opening will be done by Melton Mayor Bob Turner. As a result our Year 3-6 assembly will not be held next Friday 23rd. We will reschedule 3/4 Blake’s assembly item to a following date. Selected students from Kurunjang will represent the school for the official ceremony at the Community Hub with a speech and performance of African drumming. We look forward to seeing you at the student learning conferences on Tuesday and Wednesday night, at the costume parade on Friday morning or enjoying the events at the Community Hub. ~ Learning Together ‘BOTTLE TOPS & BREAD TAG’ COLLECTION Just a reminder, we continue to collect cleaned bottle top lids and bread tags. ‘SPORTS COLOURS DAY’

Junior School Council is getting behind one of their Year 6 peers, Detroit, who has made it to the Victorian State Team for Rugby Touch. This is an amazing achievement. He will be playing in a National tournament in Canberra against other States of Australia.

Detroit’s brother Keoni, who is now in Year 7 and attended KPS, also made the team. We will be helping them raise money to support their family in sending them to the competition. As we know, trips cost a lot of money and we wouldn’t want them to miss out on this amazing opportunity. This competition is a great pathway and has in the past lead players into National and International Competitions such as the Olympics and Commonwealth Games.

On Friday, August 16, we will be having a Sports Colours Day. Come in your favourite sports colours or uniform and bring a gold coin to help support Detroit.

Let’s all get behind him, and his brother Keoni, and help them achieve this goal.

Thankyou ~ Mrs Burton & JSC
