SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORTFrom the classroomsI have enjoyed spending time in classrooms over the last two weeks to see the excellent learning being undertaken by students.

In Agricultural our programs have been enhanced with the donation of two calves by local Dairy Farmer, Mr Corey Crosthwaite. Mr Crosthwaite has been an outstanding supporter of our school farm in recent years, donating calves for our students to raise. Over the last two weeks our Agriculture students have been very busy mixing formula and bottle feeding our new wards. Day old chickens also arrived this week to support the Year 7 Agriculture program, where students raise chickens and compare the growth rates of chickens on various diets.

Our Ag farm provides students with an opportunity to develop skills in animal husbandry as well as developing an understanding of how to propagate seeds and grow fruit, vegetables and herbs which support our cooking programs in Food Technology and Hospitality. In the future we expect to broaden the offerings to students in this area with additional Vocational Education Training (VET) courses which will provide students with a wide range of skills to support their employment beyond school.

Year 7 history students in Mrs Wolther’s class have been consolidating their understanding of the Vikings by creating the missing two scenes of the Bayeoux Tapestry; which showcased not only their historical understanding but their artistic skills. The Avengers class have been creating Viking Runes with Mrs Mainey, showing their Viking names. Please turn to page 6 for a photo of Jamaica and Cameron working on their Runes with Mr Mason.

Year 12 VET Metal students have been very busy working on their major projects, including motorbike stands and complex decorative cube structures. In addition, our Construction students are building picnic tables for the playground.

Subject selectionsMonday evening, we will be holding the Year 10 into 11 subject selection evening at 6pm in the SEC. This is an important event where students and parents will gain an understanding of HSC requirements and the pathways and choices available to our students. There will be an opportunity to speak with subject teachers about their courses to ensure that students are making the right choice about the subjects they will complete over the next two years.

In addition, students will be interviewed by a panel of teachers after they have submitted their subject selections to ensure that their choice will support their long-term education and career goals.

It is vital that all Year 10 students and their parents attend this event and I look forward to speaking with students and parents during the evening.

Road SafetyPlease remind your children about the important of road safety. Unfortunately, we do not have a designated crossing at the front of the school, so it is imperative that students take the time to cross the road safely, ideally walking up to the traffic lights to cross. Visibility at the front of the school can be poor for drivers so it is vital that students look both ways before crossing and if riding a bike always wear their helmet.

YEAR 11 TEXTILES & DESIGNOur practical project for Yr 11 Textiles and Design required students to choose a country as a source of inspiration for their bag and then design, decorate and construct the bag. Many of the students in this class had no background in junior school Textiles and they have done an amazing job, in the midst of dealing with Covid and its restrictions to create some fabulous bag designs. The front panels of the bags were created by students from a piece of white cotton - so all colourwork (printing and dyeing) and decorations were done by the students. I am very proud of how they have applied themselves and the beautiful bags they have created and can't wait to see what their major projects bring for the HSC in 2021. Mrs Marriott, TAS Faculty

DOWN AT THE FARM Students have been spending time getting to know some new residents of Tweed River High School Farm. We have two new baby calves (Barack & Belle) and some baby chickens. Students have been learning how to feed the calves and ensuring they put on the right amount of weight per week. Year 8-10 Agriculture classes are currently learning about both the beef and dairy industries as part of their curriculum. Year 7 students are also currently engaged in tracking the growth of baby chickens and growing vegatables as part of their 'Farms and Ecosystems' unit.

YEAR 7 HISTORYYear 7 History is completing The Vikings unit of work. Their assignment work was writing a Survival Guide for a teenager of today to let them know how different life was in Viking times. 7N's work has been beautifully presented in their google class.

While some students continue to complete the Survival Guide work in class, others were busy designing their own Viking shield, with pictures designed to protect warriors in Viking battles.

Other students competed online using the Education version of Minecraft in the create section. They created a Viking's village, planted seeds, raided others' crops, and scored sheep to eat. Students were also able to create longships and longhouses with burning fires as a competition after their assignment task.

LIBRARY NEWSTerm 3 is an important time for our seniors and our library has seen many year 11 and 12 students working on large assignments. Remember that tutors are available to support students from year 7 to 12 every Tuesday and Friday. Our reading lessons have been running smoothly and we appreciate the support of McDonalds with their reward vouchers. Our best readers get to have a free snack and it really helps motivate students to keep reading.

We continue to purchase new fiction titles and have ordered all the new NESA HSC workbooks that should be of great help for our year 12 students.

In the difficult times we are facing, remember the value of reading and escaping into another world/ life that is not our own, where we can be free from our worries. Whilst there are great advantages in living in the Digital Age, there is much we can do, away from screens in the natural world or at home.

FACT SHEET FOR PARENTS, GUARDIANS AND CARERS

WHAT IS THE NCCD?The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) takes place every year.

The NCCD is a collection that counts:

• the number of school students receiving anadjustment or ‘help’ due to disability

• the level of adjustment they are receiving toaccess education on the same basis as otherstudents.

Students are counted in the NCCD if they receive ongoing adjustments at school due to disability. This ‘help’ allows them to access education on the same basis as a child without disability. The NCCD uses the definition of disability in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.

Schools provide this information to education authorities.

Go to What is a reasonable adjustment? below to learn about adjustments.

WHY IS THIS DATA BEING COLLECTED?All schools in Australia must collect information about students with disability.

The NCCD:

• ensures that the information collected istransparent, consistent and reliable

• provides better information that improvesunderstanding of students with disability

• allows parents, guardians, carers, teachers, principals, education authorities and governmentto better support students with disability.

Student with disability loadingFunding from the Australian Government for students with disability is based on the NCCD through the student with disability loading.

Students with disability who are counted in the top three levels of the NCCD (extensive, substantial and supplementary) attract the loading. Funding is based on a per-student amount at each of the three levels of additional support. The amount of the loading reflects the level of support students with disability need to participate fully in school, with higher funding for those who need higher levels of support.

Australian Government recurrent school funding is provided as a lump sum to school authorities including state and territory governments, which can then distribute the funding to their member schools according to their own needs-based arrangements.

The Government expects schools and school systems to consider their funding from all sources (ie Australian Government, state and territory and private) and prioritise their spending to meet the educational needs of all of their students, including students with disability. This can include payment of professional learning for staff and building inclusive cultures in schools.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THE NCCD FOR STUDENTS?The information collected by the NCCD helps teachers, principals, education authorities and governments to better support students with disability at school.

The NCCD encourages schools to review their learning and support systems and processes. This helps schools to continually improve education outcomes for all students.
