I am glad we were able to facilitate an introduction to this year’s candidates for the local election. There were some great questions and discussion. If you were not able to make the meeting I encourage you to reach out to the candidates directly and become an informed voter. Consider which candidates will best meet the needs of the citizens and our businesses in Colchester. I urge everyone to get out and vote on November 5th in Colchester or wherever you are registered. We had another successful Scarecrow decorating contest again this year. We had 21 registered contestants this year and voting just wrapped up. The winners will be announced at the next dinner meeting. A big thank you to Angela Zizik, Tiffany Quinn, Pat McCarthy for their assistance in organizing and setting up the event. Thanks to our staff Jake Snyder and Meredith Eisenberg for their support and Cliff O’Donal for sponsoring the hay again this year. As some of you may be aware we had to postpone the parade of costumes that normally kicks of our scarecrow event. The town cancelled all activities on town property after dusk due to the EEE virus concerns. It was the right thing to do and I am happy to report that Park & Rec asked us to include our parade of costumes with their Trick or Trunk and Fireworks (the parade kicks off the event promptly at 5:30pm) rescheduled on November 1st at the recreation complex. After our November 5th meeting, our next big event will be our Holiday Auction On December 3rd at the Polish Club. Our committee chair Ash Bashir and his committee: Svetlana Smith and Taylor Sasman are working diligently to make this the largest auction ever. We ask for your support with some great auction Items this year. Please invite your friends and family to participate in the auction. The more the merrier! It is for a great cause, to support the Colchester food & Fuel bank (Santa’s Anonymous) as well as the CBA Scholarship Fund. Thank you all for your continued support. I look forward to seeing you at the November meeting. November 2019

WINTER IS COMING… One thing we can be certain of living in the northern states is snow. With the snowfall and various other freezing precipitation, we can count on a few things. Happy skiers and rusty cars. While the snow itself does not cause the rusting of the cars, the chemicals used to treat the roads do.

Here is your chemistry lesson for the day; rust is the result of an electrochemical reaction combining iron and oxygen to form iron oxide. When water is added, it steps up the process, partly by bringing more oxygen and carbon dioxide in contact with the metal, and also by acting as an electrolyte (an agent for electrolysis). However, pure water doesn’t function all that well as an electrolyte. In order for water to function as an electrolyte, it needs some impurities. This is where road salt comes into the picture. Towns and cities spread both salt and sand on the roads during the winter for different reasons: Sand provides traction, while salt both melts the ice and snow and prevents it from refreezing. So…when road salt is working, it’s introducing a lot of free floating ions into melting water on the road that your tires kick up into your wheel wells and other moisture-trapping crevices. Sodium chloride is not the only treatment used. It’s just the cheapest. Other treatments include calcium chloride and magnesium chloride which are even more damaging to your vehicle.

Once the rust starts, it works quickly. Iron oxide molecules take up more space than iron atoms, so they start to expand. Carbon dioxide in the water combines with the iron to create iron hydroxide, another form of rust that easily separates from the base metal. None of these processes stop unless all the corrosion is removed and the base metal is protected by some form of barrier.

INTRODUCING FLUID FILM®… Fluid Film® is a safe, affordable, extremely effective application to help extend the life of your vehicle and reduce repair costs due to corrosion related issues. It also provides long-term lubrication to any moving parts. When the US Navy needed to conquer the costs and delays of battling rust and corrosion in the ballast tanks of its thousands of combat and support vessels in World War II, an innovative chemist formulated a powerful protectant based on lanolin (wool wax). The savings were immediate. The costs of chipping, sealing and painting were greatly reduced. The new film penetrated corrosion and rust quickly. Fluid Film® has proven to be effective in some of the most severe conditions; industrial, agricultural, raw-terrain construction…even on the space shuttle! It is non-toxic, non-hazardous, contains no solvents and is environmentally friendly.Fluid Film® protects all known metals by creating a non-drying barrier that seals out moisture and air. With the Fluid Film® barrier in place, existing rust and corrosion cannot develop. Fluid Film® penetrates to the base metal, remaining active and migrating to inaccessible areas. It provides long-term protection from the corrosive effects of salts, calcium chloride, moisture and fertilizers.

RELIABLE AUTO CENTER CAN OFFER THIS SERVICE TO YOU… Call Reliable Auto Center to make an appointment for your Fluid Film® treatment. The application typically takes one hour but varies by vehicle size. The cost of the treatment also varies by vehicle size. Don’t subject your vehicle to another harsh northeast winter without the protection of Fluid Film®!!
