Art Year 4/5 students from Studios 10 & 13 have taken on the challenge to fold a thousand paper cranes to recognize International Day of Peace on September 21st. Steph has talked with the students about the horrific atomic bombings over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki which took place in August 1945. Sadako Sasaki was a 2 years old girl at the time of the bombings who was diagnosed with leukemia, caused by radiation from the bombs. She passed away when she was 12 years old. Sadako was inspired to fold a thousand paper cranes by the Japanese legend that ‘one who created a thousand paper cranes would be granted a wish’. Her wish was simply to live through her disease.

Learning in our Junior Primary Classes Rooms 0, 1 and 2 have been developing understanding in a range of concepts across maths. From weeks 1 through 3, the reception classes have welcomed 3 pre-service teachers. We have welcomed Rani, Angela and Ariel to our learning spaces and have been supporting them to develop their teaching practice. These student teachers have taken on the teaching load for a shape unit in maths. We have been learning about 1D, 2D and now 3D shapes. Activities have been based around finding shapes in our environment, creating shapes using matchsticks and geoboards, sorting and matching shapes, investigating shapes with provocations and also discussing sides and corners In rooms 3, 4 and 4A, students have been learning about column graphs. Column graphs have a title, columns, column labels, a base line and tell us something. Students are saying sentences like “My column graph tells me that …”. They have also learnt to tally in 5s. The pictures show some of the ways students have been learning.

The paper crane (or peace crane) is one of the most widely recognized models in the origami world. Everyone recognizes the paper crane as a symbol of peace and goodwill. Cranes originally symbolized longevity and good health.

SAPSASA Here is another example of one of our Prospect North Primary School students showing excellence in the community. Way to go Jenna!! Between the 17th and 20th of June I represented the North Adelaide District in the SAPSASA State Netball carnival at Priceline Stadium. It was a lot of fun but I was very exhausted by the end of the week. My team and I played 10 full matches of netball across 4 days; we won 5, lost 2, and drew 2. This meant we finished 4th on the ladder overall. I felt extremely privileged to get a week off school doing something I love! By Jenna S

This Week in

Studio 13 This term we have been looking at ‘Learning

Powers’ and have paired each one with a creative

task to better understand what these look like in

the classroom. Our most recent Learning Power is

‘Imagination’, which means to creatively explore

possibilities.

We connect what we know to new ideas and

allow the mind to bubble up with possibilities. We

visualise to refine skills or explore consequences

and are intuitive by following the path of thought

or feeling.

With Book Week coming up, we decided to

choose our favourite story characters, and use our

imagination to design a

handmade costume. Our

criteria included a

sustainable perspective, as

we could only use

recyclables or materials that

were already in the

classroom. We have sketched out two designs and

collected sample materials for our final collage –

to show colour and texture.

To ensure our costumes fit properly, we have

applied math concepts, including measurement

and symmetry to create patterns before

beginning.

We are now starting to bring these costumes to

life. We hope to have them finished just in time

for Book Week!
