| DARLING RANGE SPORTS COLLEGE NEWSLETTER | 2017 TERM 1, EDITION 1 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Welcome back to our students and parents to what looms as an exciting and successful year. I extend a special welcome to all new students and parents and in particular, our Year 7 students. We certainly began 2017 with a rush, holding our opening assembly, information evenings for Year 7 and Year 12 parents, VET induction day, professional learning days for teachers, Year 7 transition day, College and interschool swimming carnivals and cyber-safety workshops. Just around the corner is the annual fun run and ANZAC assembly. The opening assembly saw the presentation of the 2016 Year 11 academic achievements including Dux and Runner Up Dux. Congratulations to all students who received Top Student Awards with special mention to our Academic Dux, Jack Muggridge and Runner Up Dux, Kobi Lowicki. The VET (Vocational Education and Training) Dux was awarded to Tanayaa Brown. The new Year 12 Student Councillors and Sports Captains were also presented to the school. It is with pleasure that I announce the Student Council Leaders: I look forward to working with the Student Council and Sports Captains as they represent their fellow students across the College. Also announced at the Assembly were the 2017 Scholarship recipients. Congratulations to: Academic Scholarships: Jack Muggridge, Jade Richmond, Rylen Towers VET Scholarship: Ebony Doran Sports Scholarships: Tyson Barron (AFL), Joshua Jones (Athletics), Matthew Martin (Baseball), Aidan Hodge (Cricket), Katie Te Ao (Netball), Joshua Samson (Soccer) and Jason Martin (Swimming). Staff have spent much time analysing the College performance data for 2016. This analysis will form the basis of the 2017 Annual Report which will be finalised later this term. In viewing the performance data, it is pleasing to see another solid performance by our ATAR students following the success of 2016. Our students performed admirably with a median ATAR of 71 and Attainment Rate of 99%. Our VET students also excelled with 83% of students achieving a Certificate II or higher. In particular, I would like to congratulate the 2016 Year 12 Dux, Jennifer Carter and our VET Dux, Chloe Redmond as well as students who received a Certificate of Merit from the School Curriculum and Standards Authority: Shae Muggridge, Jennifer Carter and Ross Orbon. Performance data across all years provides information for the College to develop its priorities, targets and strategies as we plan for the coming year. In 2017, we review our current Business Plan and develop our new Business Plan for 2018-2020. 2017 TERM 1, EDITION 1 NEWSLETTER Chelsea Batty President Briony Kennedy Vice President Taylor Slater Councillor Kiesha Wareham Councillor Petra Gannaway Councillor Blake McGann Sports Captain Chloe Hill Sports Captain

FROM THE PRINCIPALI am pleased to announce that both the Liberal and Labor Parties made significant funding commitments to the College, with Liberal pledging $10.5m and Labor $10m. The main focus of the funding is to upgrade the Design and Technology and Home Economics Centres. Other areas to be funded, pending costs, include the canteen, Science department, ovals and courts. I look forward to development in these areas of the College.

The PACES Program commenced this term with Year 6 students from our partner primary schools (Dawson Park, Edney, Forrestfield, High Wycombe, Wattle Grove and Woodlupine) attending Darling Range Sports College once a week. Students participate in lessons and activities to extend and challenge their thinking. This Program runs throughout the year and provides a transition program to students who enrol into the ACES Program in Year 7.

Thank you to those parents who nominated for membership of the new College Board. I am pleased to announce the new Board members:

I encourage all parents to inform the College if their child is selected for state or national representation. We endeavour to acknowledge all students who achieve these honours.

I wish all students a successful 2017.

FROM THE MIDDLE SCHOOL COORDINATORThe first few weeks of Term 1 have seen students moving around the campus and meeting new teachers and Administration staff. This can be a little overwhelming but the students have handled it very well. If your child is finding it a little difficult, please remind them that they can come and see me, Mrs Wallace (Middle School Manager) and Justine Hughes (Youth Worker) in Student Services.

We also recommend that you make contact with teachers via email to keep track of how your child is progressing with their subjects and Individual Pathway Planning (IPP). For school students, the IPP is a plan for how an individual will navigate the curriculum to demonstrate career competencies and achieve career development outcomes. The IPP is a valuable tool for managing transitions and will assist students in Course Selection / Counselling in Year 10. This year, these IPP’s will be digitally accessed and submitted. They are found on CONNECT under the student’s Form Class.

Form teachers will also be working closely with your child on their IPP so we encourage you to contact them via email as well. Staff email addresses are located under the Contact Us tab on our website and Form Teacher email addresses are listed under the Parent Information tab.

Many teachers are already utilising the online CONNECT program with their classes. If you would like access to CONNECT to see what your child is studying, please download, complete and return the registration form as soon as possible and return to the front office for processing. These forms are located on our website under the Parent Information tab.

STUDENT SERVICES REMINDERSUNIFORM It is fantastic to see the majority of students wearing correct uniform. DRSC caps are the only type to be worn on school premises. Any other brand or colour cap will be confiscated and will then need to be collected by a parent/guardian from the front office. Also, jumpers or ‘hoodies’ not of DRSC brand need to be removed once on site.

ATTENDANCE Please contact the College as soon as possible if your child is going to be absent or requires an early leaver’s pass. This can be done via the school app, SMS or a phone call to 9453 0135.

MOBILE PHONES/HEADPHONES Students need to remember that mobile phones are not to be used on College premises. They should either be handed in at the front office or locked away securely. Students are responsible for ensuring the security of their own mobiles.

ACES PROGRAMWelcome to our new students and their families to the ACES Program. February 2017 saw a smooth start to the academic year for our Year 7 ACES students. Congratulations to Jade Richmond and Rylen Towers who were awarded Academic Scholarships for 2017.

An afternoon tea and information session was held for Year 7 ACES students and their families. Thank you to all parents who supported this event, it was fantastic to see so many families and have the opportunity to chat one on one.

This year we are running a Study Skills Program across Years 7 to 12 ACES and ATAR classes. These sessions are conducted by Elevate Education and will cover topics such as Study Kick Start, Study Sensei and Time Management. An early introduction to good study techniques will greatly assist students in reaching their full potential. We will also be running a condensed version of this course free of charge to parents.

Throughout the year a variety of extra-curricular events will be held to ensure that our ACES students are truly thriving.

VETThe VET classes have started off with flying colours! We have two Year 11 and two Year 12 classes in 2017, with only a few students finalising their Workplace Learning positions. All four classes have started their work extremely well and most have commenced TAFE placements.

Our General students are currently investigating Workplace Learning opportunities as they will be attending work experience during the ATAR exams in weeks 7 and 8 of Term 2. By achieving 55 hours of Workplace Learning and completing a skills journal, this attributes to their WACE. Please encourage your child/children to start this process now, as we have a staggering amount going out into industry and the community and wish to have all details confirmed.

SPORT PROGRAM UPDATEThe Sports Academy is excited to have new staff join our team this year:

Aaron Black, Sandover medalist and West Perth Falcons premiership player, joins the AFL team.

FUN RUNThis year’s fun run will take place on Thursday, 30 March 2017.

The event is a fundraiser and is all about participation. Students raise funds and are rewarded with fantastic incentive prizes. Family support is key to our fundraising success and we encourage all students to participate.

The more money we raise, the more we can provide for our students through vital school projects.

Students have now received a Sponsorship Form which will assist in raising funds for the school. Please read through the Sponsorship Form and become familiar with the five steps to supercharge your fundraising.

Students who raise as little as $10 will receive an incentive prize for their efforts. There are over 70 prizes on offer so select your favourite and make this your fundraising goal.

Please see our website for more information.

COMMUNITY NOTICESA group of students are making blankets for the homeless, a community project for 2017.

We would greatly appreciate donations of 12 ply wool, knitting needles and crochet hooks. Please leave these items at the front desk.

If any parent, caregiver or friend would like to contribute by knitting or crocheting, please contact Jenny Bell: [email protected] or 9453 0152.
