    Cartoons and Journalism

Indian Institute of Cartoonists is an organisation, first of its kind in India, established to promote the art of cartooning in the country. The organisation gives a large degree of autonomy to cartoonists to work on an idea and to publish their work. This industry is booming with the emergence of novel ideas every now and then.

    Nurtaj Khatun (Semester III)

The word 'cartoon' is a pictorial parody or imitation that depicts a story and revisit to analyse societal events. The first picture to be called a cartoon was John Leech's drawing in the 'Punch' magazine (Britain, 1843). The word was first used when an exhibition of pictures were given for a competition to decorate the new House of Parliament. Since then the power of cartoons is not in doubt as they use humour and satire in pictures and drawings to provoke a response from audiences.

The comic strip, animated cartoons for the electronic media and the editorial cartoons for newspapers and magazines are some of the popular forms of cartoons in Modern Journalism. The press adopts the use of cartoons as its strategy for disseminating information about politics, crime, sports etc. Cartoonists play a significant role in designing and communicating the story or event in a humorous way.

  • John C. Maxwell has managed to stand out with “The Difference Maker”. In his book he highlights the importance of ‘attitude’ in life and how it helps in differentiating between failure and success. The book has an easy conversational flow and it also urges the reader to think deeply about their lives. The author explains the origin of our attitude as well as its capacities, limitations and value as an asset.

The book reveals that in order to achieve a winning attitude we must overcome five obstacles that are: discouragement, change, problems, fear; and failure. So, in case you are wondering why you are not succeeding in your life, then this book might just give you a relevant perspective.
