Follow UWC Maastricht UWC Maastricht Directors' Bulletin View Online Newsletter 2016 / 2017 - week 49 Dear UWC Maastricht families, Today marks the 25th anniversary celebration of the Maastricht Treaty and fittingly UWC Maastricht students are playing a leading role. We are incredibly privileged to be part of a school community and educational movement that is universally recognised for its celebration of international and intercultural difference, values that were at the heart of the foundation of the European Union 25 years ago. Yesterday evening DP1 student Dionysius Nataraja from Indonesia was honoured with the first prize at the second annual Maastricht Human Rights Prize competition. This year's theme was article 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 'Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution', Dion's arresting charcoal drawing powerfully captured the theme. Congratulations to all of our students who entered the competition. Peter T. Howe Sinterklaas We were so excited to have Sinterklaas, together with his UWC-Piets, visit the Primary School. Students had been waiting patiently, putting out their shoes, practicing their songs, and making sure their Dutch was perfect! Everyone put on a lovely show and we commend Sinterklaas for his excellent choice of Piets who did such a good job! Year 4 Year 4 went to sing Christmas songs at the De Beyart elderly home and in the Vrijthof. They had been rehearsing in their music classes and brought some winter cheer! Cinderella’s Ball ‘Tis the Party Season and Cinderella’s Ball kicked off in Royal Fashion today. You may recall that about six weeks ago, Cinderella and Prince Charming visited Year 1. They were in need of help and set Year 1 the challenge to create the most beautiful ball for them. Year 1 rose to the challenge. They did their research on fairy stories, turning their ideas into beautiful stories and puppet shows, wrote their invitations, explored the dangers of living in a fairytale kingdom – beware dragons! – and created a menu fit for royalty. Cinderella and Prince Charming allowed them to invite their mums and dads so all the people in UWC-Land could attend! A Big Thank You! Look at all these wonderful gift bags ready for the party at the AZC on Wednesday. Thank you for your generosity! Parent Survey A parent survey, as a joint initiative between parents, Division Council and the school, will be making its way to your inbox in the next week. We would really appreciate the ten minutes it will take to fill out as the feedback can really help us shape a better experience and be the basis for on-going dialogue. Reports and Parent Evening Slips These will be emailed to parents on Monday. If you are leaving you will have a printed version ready for the end of the term. End of Term - Friday 16 December Finishing time next week is as usual, however there are no after school clubs on Friday. Rebecca Reminder: CAS Musical "Lucky Stiff" Next week the CAS creativity Musical club will present their annual musical: "Lucky Stiff". Lucky Stiff is a musical farce. It was the first collaboration for the team of Lynn Ahrens (book and lyrics) and Stephen Flaherty (music). The show is based on the 1983 novel 'The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo' by Michael Butterworth. It was created and performed at Playwrights Horizons off-Broadway in 1988, and won the Richard Rodgers Award for that year. The musical was seen in London's West End in 1997 but has not had a Broadway production. The performances are taking place on Wednesday 14 December and 15 Thursday December (both evenings at 7:00 PM in the Atrium). To reserve tickets, please contact [email protected] or [email protected] . Entry for students costs 2 euros, while entry for staff and externals costs 3 euros! A show you do not want to miss!! Serious Request 2016 - Stop the Silent Killer - Pneumonia Did you know that pneumonia kills more children than any other illness – more than AIDS, malaria and measles combined? As part of the Service Action programme MYP1 and MYP5 are collaborating to raise awareness about the silent killer pneumonia and fundraise through the Serious Request 2016 campaign. All this week and the following week, various activities and actions are organised to reach our target donation of 500 euros. Joanna Lame from DP1 will participate. Please save the date! Peace Walking Man (Walk for Human Rights in Congo) On Friday 2 December two DP students Trevor and Alejo together with our Residence Mentors Cathie and Ivan welcomed the Peace Walking Man, John Mpaliza. Alejo writes: We walked with John from Eijsden to Maastricht to support his campaign of helping his homeland which is suffering because of the indiscriminate extraction of coltan and cobalt from the región of Beni and the exploitation of the citizens and workers. John is walking from Italy to Belgium to tell his story and spread the news of the actual situation in Congo. On 8 December he will arrive in Brussels to have a meeting with the EU Parliament to ask for help. Read an interview with Alejo and John at: https://newsjunkynl.wordpress.com/2016/12/03/peace More information can also be found on the website of Mondiaal Centrum Maastricht or www.facebook.com/peacewalkingman and www.facebook.com/john.mpaliza YES Conference Thank you to everyone who attended the YES conference. Our theme of Green vs. Grey allowed us to look critically at sustainability and how it is approached today. On the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of December we explored the interplay between sustainability and development using the different backgrounds of our participants for enlightening and horizon-broadening discussion. We approached very different sides to this contemporary issue and we hope that our participants not only realise the urgency of action but also the flaws of our current sustainable methods. The closing ceremony marked the end of this years conference but we truly hope that the discussion does not stop here. With this conference we aimed to cause a spark that would transform the minds of our participants. We entrust our participants to be changemakers and hope to see issues on sustainability as a bigger topic of discussion going forward. Lastly, the YES-Conference Organising Team give our thanks to all those who helped make the conference a reality: teachers, staff and parents from our school community, Sint Janskerk staff, Petra de Waal Malefijt, Cees Bom and our sponsors Reprodex and Triodos Foundation. Dinner with Day-student Families Last week the PSG and the Student council organised dinner evenings for residential students and day- student families. More than 40 residential students met with day-student families. It was a great success, with a lot of positive feedback. Thanks to everyone who took part in this new initiative. Due to its success this initiative will be repeated in the future. So keep an eye out to sign up to be a hosting family or to be a residential participant. Swap Shop - Thank you! The swap shop team and all the happy costumers would like to thank all parents and staff who donated winter clothing for the Monday's swap shop event. About 200 items got sold, some of the remaining pieces are on its way to the refugees thanks to the initiative of the International Friends Share team and some will be donated to the Salvation Army. The next selling event will be in February and we would like to encourage especially the male part of the community to clear their closets until then as we desperately lack clothes for men. Music School Concert 1 December Thanks to those who attended the concert on last Thursday. Maastricht Human Rights Prize Each week we are featuring the wonderful pieces of creative work that our students submitted to the Maastricht Human Rights Prize (Maastrichtse Mensenrechten Prijs)! This week we feature the entry from Natasha Amisha. Description: The art piece is made up of different watercolour figures outlined with pencil and they are all connected to each other with string. My intention is that by believing that the places we travel and come from are what makes us shine bright. We are humans and we are always in movement. Through this artwork the message I am conveying is that everyone has traveled and moved around and this follows and sticks with us but it shouldn’t be the thing that restricts our freedom of movement. The other entry we feature this week, is a video that is produced by a group of DP students who, at the day of the Big Draw, went to the AZC in Heerlen and drew together with children there: https://drive.google.com Tian Parent Portal Our big news today is that we are launching the Parent Portal of our new school information system. Parents, please be on the lookout for an e-mail from school with your individual sign-on information and a link to a 'How To' video. Once we have everything up and running, we feel that the Parent Portal will help us streamline, consolidate and optimize communication about all of the exciting things that happen here at UWCM. In Secondary, our DP2s are finishing their university applications and have received their November marks. DP1s just had a Test Week to get a sense of where they stand with respect to their IB subjects. MYP students continue to explore their 9 diverse subjects. I am appreciative of all the effort that has gone in to this portion of the year and wish everyone a peaceful, and richly deserved holiday. Looking ahead, on Friday 27 January 2017, MYP and DP1 students will receive a Full Report. They will get Attained Grades to date and a teacher comment in each of their subjects. They will also get a Tutor comment. For our local families, the Parent-Teacher (and Student if desired) Conferences are scheduled for all day on Friday 10 February 2017. Finally, to help get us in the holiday spirit, a group of MYP 1,2 and 3 students did a lovely job carol singing at the Magical Meet and Greet at the Expat Centre yesterday evening. Tine Vandewege organised the group. Thanks to Anna Watson, Luke Brennan, Fionn Brennan, Berit Royers and Anna Killham. Tom Testimonies Another nice story: My lovely roommates from Jamaica, Canada and Sudan have become like family to me. I discovered here that even though my fellow students come from all over the world, we are not that different from each other. We are all teenagers with big dreams. From exploring the culture of Morocco on a project week, to organising a peace conference, we made it possible by working together. I love being here, but for many it was difficult to get used to the large amount of rain, bikes and bread in the Netherlands. As a ‘Dutchie’ I felt like it was my duty to help them. I tried to do this by teaching them the language and showing them good aspects of the country, like stroopwafels. I believe it is undeniable that both UWC Maastricht and the Netherlands are amazing places.
