Dear Members,

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce to you this almost forgotten, butinteresting document, titled “ Budo Kensho” concerning the goals of Budo establishedby some leading federations in Japan in 1987 to protect and preserve the spirit andvalues of traditional Budo. During the first European Budo Symposium held 1998 inMoers (Germany) Mr. Feliks Hoff already mentioned the enormous importance of thisdocument. Chairman of the meeting was Dr. Takahiro Shinjo from the JapaneseEmbassy. It was a great honor being invited as a guest that day.

Regards,Jens Fricke

Bud , the Japanese martial ways, have their origins inthe age-old martial spirit of Japan. Through centuries ofhistorical and social change, these forms of traditionalculture evolved from combat techniques (Jutsu) intoways of self-development ( D ).

Seeking the perfect unity of mind and technique, Budhas been refined and cultivated into ways of physicaltraining and spiritual development. The study of Budencourages courteous behaviour, advances technicalproficiency, strengthens the body, and perfects themind. Modern Japanese have inherited traditional valuesthrough Bud which continue to play a significant rolein the formation ofthe Japanese personality, serving as sources of

boundless energy and rejuvenation. As such, Bud hasattracted strong interest internationally, and is studiedaround the world.

However, a recent trend towards infatuation just withtechnical ability compounded by an excessive concernwith winning is a severe threat to the essence of Bud . Toprevent any possible misrepresentation, practitioners ofBud must continually engage in self-examination andendeavour to perfect and preserve this traditional culture.

It is with this hope that we, the member organisations ofthe Japanese Bud Associations, established The BudCharter in order to uphold the fundamental principles ofBud

ARTICLE 4 D (Training Hall)

The D j is a special place for training the mind and body.In the D j , Bud practitioners must maintain discipline, and show proper courtesies and respect. The D j should be a quiet, clean, safe, and solemnenvironment

ARTICLE 5 TEACHING

Teachers of Bud should always encourage others to alsostrive to better themselves and diligently train theirminds and bodies, while continuing to further theirunderstanding of the technical principles of Bud .Teachers should not allow focus to be put on winning orlosing in competition, or on technical ability alone. Aboveall, teachers have a responsibility to set an example asrole models.

ARTICLE 6 PROMOTING BUDPersons promoting Bud must maintain an open-mindedand international perspective as they uphold traditionalvalues. They should make efforts to contribute toresearch and teaching, and do their utmost to advanceBud in every way.

ARTICLE 1 OBJECTIVE OF BUD

Through physical and mental training in the Japanesemartial ways, Bud exponents seek to build theircharacter, enhance their sense of judgment, andbecome disciplined individuals capable of makingcontributions to society at large.

ARTICLE 2 KEIKO (Training)

When training in Bud , practitioners must always actwith respect and courtesy, adhere to the prescribedfundamentals of the art, and resist the temptation topursue mere technical skill rather than strive towardsthe perfect unity of mind, body, and technique.

ARTICLE 3 SHIAI (Competition)Whether competing in a match or doing set forms(Kata), exponents must externalize the spirit underlyingBud . They must do their best at all times, winning withmodesty, accepting defeat gracefully, and constantlyexhibiting self-control.
