Dear Parents/Caregivers,Many of the events and meetings that I have been to lately have been to continue to build the great partnerships that our school has with outside organizations which have the capacity to provide opportunities for our students both during and after their time in the school. I am very proud of the work that the school is undertaking with the Beacon Foundation and the links that we have already made to our local businesses and the industries such as Cummins Diesel and Hume pipes which are affiliated with Beacon and now our school. This is another powerful opportunity for our students to be exposed to things that are of value to their future success.

Our year 12 school leaders attended a full day leadership day with about forty other school captains. Again our students presented in a way that was exemplary and was reported back to me in the most positive of words.

Our students have competed very successfully in a number of public speaking contests recently and they have done themselves, their families and their school proud. M E D I A A T T E N T I O N O N C O O K I N G S K I L L S‘Because of the increasing rates of obesity, unhealthy eating habits and physical inactivity, we may see the first generation that will be less healthy and a shorter life expectancy than their parents.’ (American Heart Association website 25 November 2013, www.heart.org)

Researchers have been making this prediction for the past decade and in recent weeks there has been much local media attention given to Australia’s health crisis with headlines such as ‘Cooking should join the 3Rs’ and ‘Cooking up a cure for junk food addiction’. Queensland Health and the Australian Medical Association are suggesting that children should be taught to cook at school.

Parents at Rosewood State High School can be assured that curriculum at this school does support the development of students’ cookery skills through the compulsory Home Economics subject for all Year 8 students. This subject provides students with basic skills to produce meals and snacks for themselves and family members as well as an overview of nutrition and how to make healthy food choices. After completing the semester of study, Year 8 students are aware of the recently published Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and the 2013 Australian Dietary Guidelines. We acknowledge that during their teenage years, most students are going to consume ‘treats’, so the program includes recipes such as Banana Bran Muffins as a homemade alternative that include high-fibre ingredients (such as fruit and nuts rather than choc chips) and

U N I F O R M B L I T Z !

less sugar and salt than commercially produced muffins, which are high in sugar, saturated fat, salt, and chemical additives.

The new national Australian Curriculum includes food and nutrition in both the Health and Physical Education (HPE) and Technologies curriculum, with both curriculum areas noting that Home Economics will be part of the delivery of these two curriculum areas. Therefore, there will be ample opportunities for students to develop food and nutrition skill, including practical cooking skills at Rosewood State High.

Optimal nutrition promotes not only physical growth and health, but also cognitive development, helping children learn from infancy through to adolescence and beyond. Cognitive development includes remembering, problem-solving and decision- making. Children, adolescents and adults perform their intellectual best when they have the winning combination of healthy, balanced meals and daily physical activity; therefore developing cooking skills that promote all dimensions of health should be priority for all students!

JESSE SOVER - KING OF CLOWNS!For those of you who didn’t know, Rosewood’s resident jester Jesse Sover has recently found out he was one of a VERY select few students selected to compete to be the State Champion of School Stand-Up comedy, as part of the Class Clowns Competition! We took a few moments out of his busy day to learn a little more about him…

So…Why Stand-Up Comedy?

J: I like making people laugh and (I think) I’m good at Impro. I don’t know, people seem to like it.

Who are the Comedians that inspire you?

J: Ross Noble, Rowan Atkinson, Stephen K. Amos, Arj Barker, and the list goes on!

What was your Semi-final performance about?

J: Um....how do I put this? An amusing story about my dog…and what it did on my lawn.

Were you nervous?

Just a reminder to Parents/Guardians and students of Rosewood High, that in order to build on School Pride we are asking that all students wear their uniform correctly!

This includes:

* WHITE socks (NOT Black or Coloured)

* MAROON shorts (NOT football shorts or branded shorts)

* NO JEWELLERY or BRACELETS (these constitute a breach of Occupational Health and Safety)

and

* BLACK IMPERVIOUS LEATHER/VINYL SHOES ONLY! (Also a requirement of our Occupational Health and Safety Policy)

Should you require more information on this (as well as the rest of the Uniform Policy) Please don’t hesitate to contact the school or visit the school website!

J: Yes, that was my first time delivering Stand-Up, but I just tried to channel the nerves into positive energy.

(After the STATE FINALS)What’s next for you?

J: World Domination.

Staff, Students, Parents, Friends and the whole Rosewood Family is invited to come, laugh and cheer Jesse on in the State Finals of the Class Clowns competition on XX at the Brisbane Powerhouse. Tickets are $16 and are available at the door. Good Luck Jesse and keep up the Hilarious work!

ROSEWOOD STUDENTS CLEAN UP!

KORI’S BRAVE SHAVE

On Saturday March 1, a group of dedicated students, families and teachers from Rosewood State High School joined thousands of other volunteers across Australia to lend a hand to clean up the local community in Rosewood.

Working their way from Johnston Park, down John Street and adjoining streets, the skate park and finally railway station, the team worked tirelessly filling bags of rubbish to make their community a tidier town.

Organised by the Student Representative Council, students agreed that their morning was well spent and felt that they had contributed something to the environment and the local community.

It was fantastic to see that the volunteer’s efforts did not go unnoticed with many of the residents and shop owners approaching students to commend then on a job well done!

A heads up that THIS Thursday the 13th of March one of our students Kori Besgrove will be shaving her head in an effort to raise some much needed money the Leukaemia Foundation.

The shave will be part of the organisation’s World’s Greatest Shave pledge drive with volunteers choosing to either lose their locks, or dye their hair for the benefit of Leukaemia sufferers.

Donations can be taken at the school office, whilst Kori’s shave itself, will occur at 1pm infront of staff and students this Thursday (the 13th of March).

Thursday the 6th of March saw YOUR School Captains; Emily Maguire, Amy Daw, Joshua Feldhahn and Sam Wieland (pictured) with Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale) yet again, representing Rosewood High with pride and professionalism.

The Captains were invited to Bundamba Secondary College to meet with the school leaders from other local high schools.

The day was designed to allow the leaders to join together to share ideas and tips on being effective leaders of their school. The students were inspired by a keynote speech by Mr Pisasale and were given the opportunity to have some fun and challenge themselves in the climbing centre. Well done guys!

Sport at Rosewood State High School for 2014 is off to a flier after only just 5 weeks into the term.

So far students have had the opportunity to be involved in a number of sporting endeavours including the District Swimming Carnival, Cluster Day 2 and the beginning of CISSSA after-school sport. All students who have participated in these events have showed great pride in their school and left nothing on the field. Throughout these carnivals many students went on to make district teams with the potential for further representative honours.

District Swimming:

Held on February 13, Rosewood High took a small group of 25 swimmers to the Lowood pool for the district carnival. For such a small squad Rosewood High performed well with 3 Age Champions including strong performances from all of those involved. Overall Rosewood finished 3rd in the standings out of the 5 competing schools which was mainly due to the outstanding efforts of our relay teams, who placed 2nd in all their events.

District Age Champions:

13 Years Boys: Daniel McCarthy

13 Years Girls: Georgia Philpott

15 Years Girls: Megan Maguire

Cluster Day 2:

On record, Cluster Day 2 held out at the Laidley Recreation grounds proved to be one of our most successful sports carnivals for a long time. With 30 students trialling for the sports of Rugby League, Soccer, Golf and Netball the students brought their ‘A’ games. This resulted in 19 of the 30 students being picked to go on and represent the Lockyer district at upcoming Met West trials. What was even more pleasing to hear were the many positive

comments from the wider community at the venue towards the students’ behaviour and attitude. Whether it was sinking a putt, slotting a ball in the back of a net, shooting a hoop or scoring a try in the corner, all students performed extremely well.

CISSSA Sport:

Last week saw the beginning of CISSSA Summer Season for 2014. Rosewood High managed to fill 7 teams for this years after school sport competition. These teams included the Open and Junior Boys futsal team and the Open Girls Futsal and Touch teams who began their season with mixed results. A long trek out to Boonah saw the Open Boys Futsal go down to the locals, however there were some promising signs, particularly from Jake Bentley which is a good omen for the games to come. Their female counterparts however, fared much better on the

futsal arena with a convincing 7-1 win over Ipswich High. In attack, Lareena Meiklejohn and Brooke Fechner were ruthless on goals not giving the home team a look in. The Open Girls Touch also played their first game out at Laidley and went down 6 – 2, however the girls fought hard a carried a positive attitude throughout the game. The only home game for the week came in the form of the Junior Boys Futsal team. Playing Bremer, Rosewood’s defence was tested all game with a 6 – 3 result to the away. Strong games from the ever competitive Aaron Morris and highly reliable Will Bentley gave Bremer a shake and shows this team has plenty more to build off. This week sees the Open Boys Touch open their account against Bremer after a round 1 bye. Continue to watch this space for more sporting news at Rosewood High in 2014.

Our school has received additional funding from the Great Results Guarantee and we need to decide how we can use this money to better support our students and improve their outcomes.

We are now working to develop our own Great Results Guarantee with evidence-based strategies and actions to improve literacy and numeracy.

Read more about the guarantee at www.education.qld.gov.au/resultsguarantee.

If you have an idea on a way to support our students to learn more or if you would like to take part in the discussion please get in touch.

Make 2014 the year when your child doesn’t miss a day of school. Research shows that students who have good patterns of attendance are more likely to achieve at school.

If students aren’t at school or don’t stay the whole day, they are missing valuable lessons.

YEAR 10 Health Forum The Year 10’s recently attended a Respectful Relationships Program “Love Bites” as part of the Year 10 Health Forum. The program provided students with important information about relationship violence and sexual assault. The students were presented with scenarios that could be seen as typical of some adolescent activities and relationships and through conversation students were able to engage in very positive discussions about gender equality, respect, valuing difference and antibullying. The day ended with a creative session that encouraged students to creatively express what they had learnt during the day. The results were some fabulous paintings and a Hip Hop song. Students can take their paintings home after they have been displayed for a period of time. The students engaged well with each presenter and gained a lot of useful information.

Tips for parents Many parents find it difficult to talk to their children about their relationships with the opposite sex, or they may be concerned about their teenagers’ activities, but are not sure who to talk to, or how to tackle a conversation they may want to have with their child. The following website provides excellent information for parents to assist with managing conversations about relationships and sex and can be accessed at: http://www.cyh.com/HealthTopics/HealthTopicDetails.aspx?p=240&np=296&id=2115

WEP Student Exchange –A Once-In-A-Lifetime Opportunity!

World Education Program (WEP) Australia is now accepting applications from students who wish to participate in 2014/15 exchange programs for a summer, semester or year. Students can choose to study and live life with a carefully selected host family in more than 25 countries.

Exchange students return to Australia with maturity, confidence, and in many cases, proficiency in another language. If learning another language is not for your child, excellent programs to the USA, Canada and Ireland are also available.

I did it! 10 months in a foreign country, without knowing the language or culture. Thinking about all the amazing people I’ve met, the lessons I have learnt and things I have seen, I feel truly lucky to have been here living a different life. I have no regrets, as I have grown to be more mature, open to life and aware of the world around me. Despite it being hard, it has also been the best thing I have ever done for myself. I now feel ready to start life in Australia with a clearer idea of my strengths, weaknesses and my future goals. Exchange has really helped me define myself.Alison (Moreton Bay College) year program to Italy
