MOTIVATE - EDUCATE - CELEBRATE

On any given day, more than 1 billion of the world’s children go to school. They go to learn – but too

often, that does not happen. For many children, learning becomes difficult because of

discrimination, bullying, poor sanitation facilities, crumbling buildings or makeshift classes. Others

come to school too hungry or sick, or too exhausted from work or household tasks, to benefit from

their lessons. (https://www.unicef.org/)

At Ardross Primary School our children are fortunate to be part of a whole community whose intent it is to provide the best possible facilities to ensure a love of learning and that every child achieves

their personal best. Throughout the year parents have worked tirelessly through the Parent and

Citizens Association, School Board and helping in classrooms. Thank you for what you do for our

students. It doesn’t go unnoticed.

SCHOOL BOARD

Ardross Primary School Board (APSB) has four vacancies for the 2018 and 2019 school year. The APSB

1.1The functions of the Board are:

a) To take part in:

i) establishing, and reviewing from time to time, the school’s objectives, priorities and

general policy directions;

ii)) the planning of financial arrangements necessary to fund those objectives, priorities

and directions;

iii) evaluating the school’s performance in achieving them; and

iv) formulating codes of conduct for students at the school.

b) To promote the school in the community.

c) To determine, in consultation with students, their parents and staff of the school, a dress

code for students when they are attending or representing the school.

d) To consult with the Principal on:

i) any general policy concerning the use in school activities of prayers, songs and

materials based on religious, spiritual or moral values: sections 68(2)(b) and 70(a); and

ii) the implementation of special religious education: sections 69(2) and 70(b).

e) To approve:

i) any charge or contribution: sections 99(3) and (4);

ii) the costs to be paid for participation in an extra cost optional component of the

school’s educational programme: sections 100(1) and (3);

iv) any agreement or arrangement for advertising or sponsorship entered into by the

principal: sections 216(5) and (6).

f) If the Board is incorporated it may:

i) obtain funds for the benefit of the school;

GOOD SAMARITANS CHRISTMAS SHOE BOX COLLECTION

Woolworths, Garden City & K-Mart Garden City have both generously donated to the Good Samaritans Christmas

Shoe Box collection. Thank you to both for sponsoring this wonderful project which the children have been working on.

Mr. Hoyle and the Years 6 students have filled over 80 shoe boxes, which is an amazing effort and something we as a

community should be very proud of. Thank you all for your donations. Samantha Hickman

ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCILLORS REPORT

On Tuesday, 31 October we went to Piney Lakes for the morning for ‘Kids Teaching Kids’. We taught the other students

abut Noongar Totems. They taught us about Noongar tools and plant uses. We had painted many different native

animals onto smooth black river rocks and put their Noongar names on the back. We hid them around the area and everyone joined in a treasure hunt which was fun.

ROOM 19

Room 19 was fortunate enough to be able to visit Woodside to meet Robonaut, a robot on loan to Woodside from

NASA. They were the only school in Western Australia invited to participate in this activity. Two data science graduates

explained how maths is used in data analytics, how to find oil and gas underground and the Woodside Robotics

Programme. During their time with Robonaut, students were able to link knowledge gained from their class robotics

programme with the real world of robotics in the oil and gas industry. The programmers were happy to share their

knowledge and provided the students with an opportunity to interact with Robonaut. Alison Barnes and her team

provided a rare opportunity for our students to engage with a NASA robot and we are very appreciative.

14 of our students and Miss Heary attended the ‘First Lego League – Robotics’ competition on Sunday 12 November.

The competition consisted of four components which each group of 7 students needed to demonstrate:

• Engineer a robot and code it;

• Core values of team work of which they received an excellent;

• Project component - solve an issue:

- in the way humans use water, or

- using condensation and current technology

The students achievement are to be celebrated attaining

the place of 5th and 8th out of 34 schools. Of the 34 schools

that were represented only two were primary schools. Go

KINDY & PRE PRIMARY SPORTS DAY

On Wednesday, 18 October the Kindy and Pre Primary students held a fun sport day. The students in mixed groups

moved around a series of ten tabloids. The included bean bag throwing, parachutes, egg and spoon races and ball

activities. With music and LOTS of parent help the morning ran smoothly and was lots of fun.

After a recess break the students were back on the oval doing a variety of races. We then watched the parents have

lots of fun with their egg and spoon race. The wonderful morning concluded with a shared family picnic lunch. Thank

you to all the parent who assisted. We appreciate your help. Lee-Anne Downey
