Principals Report

I would like to start by welcoming back all students and families and wish you all the best for a great 2016.

It does not take long for a school to get into full swing. I have been very impressed with the way the students have settled back into the routine of school and the high quality learning that has been taking place during the first few weeks.

To our new Kincumber High School students and families, I hope your time at our school is filled with fun, friendship and success and you find Kincumber High School to be a school that exceeds your expectations. I feel very fortunate to work at Kincumber, it is a great school with wonderful students, supportive and interested families and dedicated staff.

Our Year 12 class of 2015 achieved some brilliant HSC results with 149 Band 5 and 6 results across all KLAs. 12 subjects were above state average. 2015 was another year of strong growth in academic performance at HSC level and is a reflection of the high expectations set by the school and the hard work of both students and staff. We have a number of new staff members at Kincumber in 2016. Mr David Krix (HT Welfare) comes to us from Ballina and brings a wealth of experience in both CAPA and Welfare. Mr Trent Martin (Mathematics) was successful in gaining a position through merit selection. Mr Rodney Degens (Mathematics) replaces Mr Mitchell Smith, who has transferred to Tamworth High School. Ms Molly Dutton (PDHPE & CAPA – Dance) will job share with Mrs Kirsty McRae after Miss Eleisha Taylor gained a 12 month contract at The Entrance Campus of Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College. Finally, Mr Jesse McIvor (science) replaces Ms Clare Winnick who has taken leave as a result of her impending motherhood. All teachers have settled into their new school well and I am confident that they will enjoy their time at Kincumber High and add value to our school community.

Our Year 7 students have transitioned to high school very well and have made an immediate positive impact on staff. Polite, respectful, motivated and interested are just some of the words staff have used to describe Year 7. I remind parents and students we are very keen to hear if your child needs extra support to fully transition into their new setting. Mr Donaldson is the Year Adviser and the person to contact if you need help. Year 7 have been on camp for the past 3 days and all reports back from camp indicate students are making new friends, learning a lot, overcoming the challenges presented to them and behaving respectfully. I look forward to hearing reports from students first hand upon their return. A full camp report will appear in our next newsletter.

Over the holidays we have continued to work on the refurbishment of areas within the school to improve the learning environment for students and staff. Painting, gutter replacement, new blinds and complete renewal of the Hall floor have been among the many jobs undertaken. The school grounds have also been given particular attention and I would like to acknowledge the work done during the holidays by our 2 GAs, Lou Forster and Keirian Williams. Many students, staff and community members have been making favourable comments.

Last week I was fortunate enough to attend the Sydney North Blue Awards Ceremony, where 2 Kincumber students, Kiran Riachardson and Kaitlin Clague, received Sydney North Blues. These are very prestigious awards and both students are wonderful role models for our school and I congratulate them on their achievement. More details will appear in the Sports Report Section later in the newsletter.

Next Wednesday night, 17 February, is our Evening of Excellence. I encourage all students receiving awards to attend this special night of recognition. Invitations have been sent out to students and if you have not replied indicating your intention to attend, a response would be appreciated, to allow us to finalise our organisation of this event.

Mrs Debenham returns from her Long Service Leave on Monday 15 February (next week) and I would like to take the opportunity to thank the entire school community for the support they have given me while in the Relieving Principal role during the first 3 weeks of term.

Paul Broadbent, Relieving Principal

Deputy Principal’s Report

Shopping precinct expectations – So far this year, students have been conducting themselves in a responsible manner before school in the Kincumber shopping precinct, which includes Coles and McDonalds. For the continued success of this popular morning ritual and for those families who are new to the school, we ask that students follow three basic expectations:

Students are to be calm, quiet and respectful when moving about the shopping precinct.

School bags and groups of students are not to obstruct walkways and thoroughfares in and around the shopping precinct.

Students are to vacate the shopping precinct by 8:10am, in order to make the five minute walk up to school and be on site as the 8:15am bell sounds.

Uniform - Thank you to the vast majority of students who have been coming to school in the correct footwear. In two newsletters in Term 4, 2015, we asked families to ensure that students started 2016 in all black, fully enclosed leather school shoes. This has been adhered to by most students and we ask that the remaining students resolve their issues and meet the school’s Work, Health and Safety requirements, particularly for operating in our TAS workshops and Science Labs. I firmly believe that wearing the full uniform, including correct footwear, demonstrates pride in your school and impacts the community’s perception of our school and its students. Our graduates, job seekers and school leavers know full well that they benefit directly through having attended a school with a positive reputation.

BYOD update – At the start of 2015, KHS adopted a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy for Years 7-12, meaning students are welcome to bring in a personal device and connect it to the school’s wi-fi for learning purposes. While laptops and tablets offer greater functionality, we also allow smart phones to be connected, acknowledging that many students already own this type of device. To connect a device, students need to collect and return a BYOD Student Agreement from their Deputy Principal, then see Mr Forster, our Technical Support Officer, to connect the device. 132 students have connected devices under the BYOD program so far.

Communication – I would like to thank the school community for their support of the school’s Facebook page. We have recently reached the significant milestone of 1,000 likes for the page. This makes it a significant communication medium for the sharing of announcements and the celebration of student learning and achievements. We endorse the thirteen years minimum age level for the use of Facebook and also respect families’ rights to choose whether they use it or not. An alternative communication tool is the school app by Tiqbiz. Download instructions are on the school website. We ask that app users (both parents and students) select the whole school category and then the year groups they wish to receive messages for.

Matt Riley - Deputy Principal (Years 8, 10 & 12)

YEAR 7-10 PDHPE UPDATE

PDHPE is one of the mandatory subjects for Years 7-10. It is an exciting subject that is relevant to all students, and addresses important issues related to health and development, as well as giving students the opportunity to develop skills for lifelong involvement in physical activity.

As part of this subject, there are a number of sensitive issues that will be covered. These sensitive issues are covered as part of broader units of work that follow the NSW PDHPE syllabus (Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) - Board of Studies NSW.)

All classes are taught by qualified PDHPE teachers, who have been trained in methods of teaching to deal with this content in an appropriate and sensitive manner. The issues that may be covered this year include drug education, mental health, child protection, growth and development, diversity and discrimination, sexual health, and relationships, including abuse of power in relationships.

Some parents/carers have an interest in finding out more about these topics or have questions about the format and content of these units. Many parents/carers like to know this information so that they can discuss any issues that arise with their children, and others request more details to ensure that lessons are being taught in a way that reflects their values and beliefs.

If you have any questions or concerns about the subject content, or the requirements for PDHPE, please contact the school to discuss these issues.

Mr P Batey, Head Teacher PDHPE

Sydney North Blue Presentation

On Tuesday 2 February, Mr Broadbent and myself had the pleasure of attending the Sydney North Blue Presentation Night, held at Asquith Golf Club. Two of our students were recipients of this prestigious award. Kaitlin Clague for her outstanding achievements in Water Polo, and Kiran Richardson for his outstanding achievements in Athletics. Kirra Dibb also received a second Sydney North Blue Endorsement for her continued achievements in Touch Football. This award is only presented to thirty-six students (two students per gender, per sport) from the 60,00 students attending schools in the Sydney North Region. An excellent achievement.

Brisbane Water Tennis Trials

Congratulations to students who have been selected into the Brisbane Water Tennis Team, who now progress onto the Sydney North Trials. We wish all students good luck at the next level.

Sydney North Baseball Team

Congratulations to Tristan Watts, who has again been selected into the Sydney North Baseball Team. He will now compete at the NSWCHSSA State Carnival at Belmont in March.

KHS Swimming Carnival

The KHS Swimming Carnival is on Thursday 25 February at the Woy Woy Peninsula Leisure Centre. Permission notes will be distributed in roll call on the Monday prior. Permission note and $8 will be collected on arrival at the pool.

The day will include swim races, novelty events and outdoor games on the grassed area. Students should come dressed in either their house colours or sport uniform. Prizes will again be on offer for the best dressed. Again, no zinc cream is to be worn or taken into the pool area.

Sydney North Trials

The Sydney North Calendar is now up outside the female PE staffroom. Students wishing to trial for Sydney North Teams must check the calendar for trial dates and collect permission notes from Mrs Toy.

Kincumber High Teams

A number of teams are already trialling. Students need to make sure they are listening to the morning announcements for details. (These will be placed on the PE window each morning.) A list of KHS Coaches is also on the window. So if you are unsure of trials, either ask the appropriate coach, or see Mrs Toy.

Deaf B - Water Aid Fundraiser:

At the end of last term the students of Deaf B; Lachlan Dries, Cathleen Ross, Dylan Condon and Jake Piepers, organised a bake sale to conclude their study of Globalisation. As a class, the students planned for and prepared the majority of the items for the bake sale.

The bake sale raised money for the students’ chosen charity, ‘Water Aid’. It was a very successful sale, raising just over $140. The amount raised will help equip one remote community with the training needed to maintain and manage their water supply system.

The students would like to say a big thank you to everyone who donated money and bought yummy treats on the day, it was a great success.

Maths News

Mathematics have had a positive start to the year – our new staff members, Mr Rodney Degens and Mr Trent Martin, have settled in well and are getting to know their way around the school.

We have recommenced our intensive numeracy lessons, working with the LAST, Mrs Maljevac, and the classroom teacher, to improve student understanding of place value. Students can also practise their place value skills by accessing edmodo at home, as all activities are linked there and new ones are added fortnightly. Most of the activities are game-based and students have participated enthusiastically.

All Year 7 and 8 classes (and some Year 9) also have access to either Mangahigh Maths (7I, 8K, 8I, 9K, 9I) or sumdog (all Year 7 and 8, 9U, 9M, 10U, 10M) through our funding. Students can also access these from home to practise their skills.

Although most students have organised their equipment for this year, some students have not yet bought calculators, or are leaving them at home. It is an important part of equipment for mathematics lessons. Please see the item about how to purchase calculators in this newsletter if you have not already done so.

Our Year 12 General Mathematics have had special guest visitors this week – Ms Trudy Baron and Ms Karla Barlow from George Brand Real Estate. They kindly came in to talk to them about the procedures to go through when renting a property, as well as some things to watch out for…we appreciate the generosity of these ladies in giving up their time. Students have gained some valuable skills for their life after they leave school, although the information they got seems to have convinced some people not to rent for a while…

Marine Studies

An excursion was held by the Marine Teachers on the second last week of school in 2015. The Year 9 and Year 10 elective Marine Studies classes caught a bus to The Entrance Baths. The students where required to do their requalification for snorkelling and swimming. When the requal was completed, the students walked down to Toowoon Bay and were broken into groups for Snorkelling, Surf Rescue and beach games. It was an absolutely beautiful day with perfect visibility in the water and a light breeze. All students behaved to a very high standard representing the School.

PARENT CARER INFORMATION

WHO IS THE GROUP FOR?

THE WAY WE SEE is an eight week group for young aged 14 -17 years, who live or study in the Newcastle or Central Coast region. No photography skills are required.

WHAT IS THE GROUP ABOUT?

The program seeks to empower young women’s self-identity, resilience and healthy relationships; and build capacity in the area of photography skills and creative expression. This will be achieved through community engagement opportunities that will assist participants to explore educational and employment pathways.

WHO WILL BE RUNNING THE PROJECT?

We are looking for fifteen young women to be involved in this group, participants do not have to have photographic experience, or own a camera, as equipment will be supplied. THE WAY WE SEE will be facilitated by Simone Darcy, who works as a freelance photographer and casual photomedia lecturer. Simone has, over the last 10 years, worked with teens in Newcastle and Sydney, running specialized photography workshops, photovoice projects and curating project exhibitions.

WHAT WILL THE PARTICIPANTS DO?

They will take part in activities including excursions to places of industry and educational centres, where each young woman will be introduced to women leaders living in our region and learning about a particular profession and its pathways. In exchange, each young woman will photograph a chosen professional within her working environment or in the field.

The project will result in a major exhibition of photographic environmental portraits, taken by the young women and launched in National Youth Week at The Newcastle Museum in April 2016.

WHAT WE NEED YOU TO DO?

As a parent/carer of a potential participant, we need you to commit to facilitating the participant’s attendance for the duration of the eight week project, including the celebration event held the following week. This date will be supplied at the commencement of the program. Also, please read and sign the permission slip and photo release attached. We ask only to be able to use photos of the workshops and creative process that staff take during the group, whereas the photos that the participants take, will only be used for the celebration event (with the participant’s permission) and then will belong to the artists themselves. If you have any concerns about protection orders or privacy issues regarding participants, please call us and we can try to work something out. Otherwise, young people will not be able to start the project until both the parent/carer permission form and photo release form are completed and returned.

The focus of this project will be on positivity and fun. We will strive to ensure participants feel valued, supported and safe. We have put strategies in place to make sure this project is a positive, enjoyable and empowering experience for all participants.

Star Struck’s music team would like to offer school student rock instrumentalists and bands the opportunity to audition for this year’s show.

The audition day will be broken up into two sessions:

During the morning session, the Music Team will hear individual instrumentalists and bands perform a piece of your own choice that demonstrated your depth of talent as an instrumentalist or group.

The afternoon session will see all auditionees return to participate in a workshop of two of the pieces from this year’s production;

●  Immortals by Fall Out Boy

●  Long Way To The Top by AC/DCExamples of these two tracks can be found at: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2EaR3tePJ1NOTJpaWxDcnlfS00 It does not matter if your band’s singer has not previously auditioned for Star Struck, we are still keen to hear your group as a whole. If your audition is successful, all of your band members may be offered the opportunity to perform as a group. However, individuals may also be offered positions in the show. Each band member must complete the following information and submit it to the Star Struck office by Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at 4pm. Auditions will be held in the Music Rooms at Lambton High School on Saturday, March 19, 2016. You will be contacted by email to be notified of your audition time and sent an mp3 excerpt of the songs listed above to prepare.

Scan and email: [email protected]Each application must contain the signature of your principal in order to be valid.

Ryan originated the role of Chistery in the premiere Australian production of Wicked, and since then, has gone on to be one of the longest serving original cast members performing over 1900 shows world wide.

In his capacity as Dance Captain, Ryan has toured with Wicked both nationally and internationally, returning to Seoul to cast the South Korean production, and recently closed the show after an 8 year run and return season to Australia.

English News

The English Faculty would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back to the Kincumber High School Community. We would like to impress upon our students, the high expectations we place on students achieving their best and for respecting each other and their fellow class mates. We focus on positive learning environments, with consistent classroom expectations which include;

Remove hat before entering

Enter room with all equipment

Take book out and read upon entering

Phones must be muted, turned off or placed in box

Listen while teacher is speaking

Raise hands to talk in class

Speak nicely to each other

Just a reminder that the English Faculty at Kincumber High School also recognises the importance of reading and are committed to improving this essential life skill in all students at our school. Therefore, the Go Read Program we successfully introduced last year, is continuing for Year 7 to 10. Evidence shows that it is in these years that this essential skill develops and the English Faculty would love to be part of creating a lifelong love of reading.

We are looking forward to a positive year, making reading an essential part of our students’ lives at Kincumber High School. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
