The Masterchef Final took place on Thursday 5 June and it was amazing to see the eight Year 9 finalists embrace the challenge with such enthusiasm. Masterchef Finalists 2014: Rory O’Brien, Ben Mc Anoy, Bradley Taylor, Patrick Johnson, Finlay Stewart, Rebecca Hale, Orla Scanlon, Aimee Frazer. An exceptionally high standard was demonstrated by all participants and past pupil Stephen Chisholm (winner of ‘The Great Irish Bake Off’) was given the difficult task of choosing the three winners! Congratulations to: 1st Orla Scanlon, 9A – Hoi sin chicken rice paper rolls with crunchy prawn and noodle salad 2nd Aimee Frazer, 9C – Roasted duck breast with a plum sauce 3rd Ben Mc Anoy, 9M – Fig, feta and serrano ham salad
Congratulations to the following former pupils who have qualified
for the Commonwealth Games:
Katie Kirk (800 m); Ben Reynolds (110m Hurdles);
Jordan Sloan (Swimming); Harry Speers (Triathlon)
Katharine Hill, Rachel Barton and
Zara Malseed represented the
Ulster U17 Hockey Development
squad which played a three-match
series against England in Lileshall
in May. They won the first match
4-2 with Zara scoring a hat-trick,
lost the second 3-1 and the third
3-2 with Zara scoring the two goals.
Our Key Stage 3 pupils have been participating in a hugely enjoyable and successful programme of Chinese culture. Year 8s have been introduced to the Mandarin language and Years 9 and 10 have been learning some Kung Fu/martial arts movements in a three-week mod-ule. Here you can see 10P with their friendly instructors.
Fifty pupils (25 in year 9 and 25 in year 8) sat the Junior Maths challenge, which is a national competition provided by the UK Mathematics Trust on May 1st. The pupils’ responses resulted in them being awarded: 10 Gold, 18 Silver and 12 Bronze certificates. [Certificates are awarded to the highest 40% of participants in the ratio (1:2:3)].
Christopher McKie (8C) recorded a result that qualified him for the Junior Mathematical Olympiad on 12 June. Well done Christopher, and congratulations to all who took part.
The U13 boys cricket team are through to the semi-final of the Mourne Cup. Mark Adair (Yr14) will cap-tain Ulster Schools at cricket. He is also in the North-ern Knights cricket side which is the equivalent of the full Ulster side in men's cricket. John Matchett has also been selected to play on the Ulster Schools team. Stephen Hodgson and Charlie Shannon have both been selected to play for the NCU in the inter-provincials at U15.

On Thursday 12 June Year 11 Home Economics
students attended the ‘Feed Your Mind’ event at
CAFRE (Loughry). The event provided the students
with an interesting and informative look at the use
of science and technology in the food industry as
well as giving them an insight into careers in the
industry.

Recently in Science, Year 8 have been looking at the dangers of over-exposure to the sun and how getting sunburnt can lead to skin cancer. They all had the opportunity to make a brochure, highlighting the dangers and offering advice as to how to be SunSmart. The school nurse, Mrs McAvoy, had the difficult task of judging the best brochures and the awards were presented at assembly on Tuesday 17 June. The girls Inter tennis team who made
the semi-final of the Cup and were de-
feated by a strong Methodist College
side.
The team includes Amy Rothwell, Claire
McCrory, Katie Ireland and Hannah
McDonnell.
Congratulations to Stephen Hodgson (Year 11) who has
been selected to play in the Ulster Hockey U16 squad and
in the NCU U15 cricket squad in the inter-provincial
tournament in July.
The junior girls tennis team
of Janet Cunningham, Nia
McNally, Ella Thompson and
Emily Smyth drew with
Strathearn ‘B’ but narrowly
lost 42-40 on games in the
Junior semi-final of the Ul-
ster Cup.
The Junior, Intermediate and Senior Boys teams all reached
the semi-finals of their competitions.
