BHCA Friends and Neighbors, So very much hashappened since our last newsletter and all of it is aresult of the wonderful volunteers your
Association is blessed to have. While there are still a fewswimming pool memberships available for 2019 season, the cap has nearly been reached. If you are thinking ofjoining, now is the time. Next, the spring park clean-upeffort was supported by a multitude of volunteersranging in age from 5 to 75. A special thanks to CraigCampbell for leading that effort. If you have driven bythe park lately, you might have noticed the start of aScout Eagle Project by Cyle Wolfe that will result inreplacement of poles as a barrier to prevent parking onprivate property. Thanks to two young volunteers(Lauren Smathers and Ben Tabor), the Annual EasterEgg Hung in the Park went off perfectly. You can tell itis a good time when the kids return gleefully to the par-ent after each egg is found. Under the continued leader-ship of Tom Dixon, and assisted by Craig Campbell anda host of Board Members, the annual spring Picnic in thePark and Parade was a huge success despite the threat ofbad weather. BHCA wants to thank all of the paradeparticipants and the County Sheriff’s support. Eventslike these simply cannot exist without communitysupport and volunteerism. Braddock Heights is sofortunate in that respect. We are excited about theFrederick Little League’s receipt of a $30,000 grant tospruce up our baseball field. Much work was done lastyear and early this year in fixing a crumbling wall,
refitting the backstop, fixing bleachers and some earth-work. The grounds committee will work with the LittleLeague in determining priorities for the field. Finally,I want to thank Will Wood for leading the PoolCommittee and directing the effort to open the pool on25 May. The pool will be equipped with an AEDlocated just outside the exit/entry point (poolside). Thisis a result of exhaustive research and discussions led byMarguerite Wilson and Jim Lautenberger. Also, we willimplement the first phase of a new entry procedure thatis computer based. While we don’t expect any glitches;however, as with any new procedure or system, there isalways that chance. Caroline Milam has spent endlesshours on this project and we thank her for her diligenceand dedication. We look forward to seeing many of youat the pool and park. We are hopeful you will enjoy theoutstanding work by your elected Board Members andPool Committee members – they are all volunteers! We could always use more.

Braddock Heights, is an integral part of the newlibrary. Completion of the 6,000-square-foot libraryon land within Harp Place Park is scheduled forcompletion this summer.
Don Easterday (shown in the picture) retrieved TrolleyCar 150 from Braddock Mountain in the early 1990s,and brought it back to the railway tracks that runthrough his property. After a two-year restorationproject, he used the historic trolley car, built in 1918,as the centerpiece of an event showcasing the town’strolley and railroad history. The annual MyersvilleTrolley Festival was held on his property for the next17 years. Don has passed on, but will long beremembered for his commitment to historic preserva-tion and the Hagerstown and Frederick Railway.A bronze plaque in Easterday’s name will be installednear the trolley within the library.
If you are interested in participating in the historicalsociety, please contact Mark Koltz [email protected] or 240-490-7951. In themeantime, please reach out and share all BraddockHeights memories (or memorabilia for our archives).
