Nepal wants more investments not aid.

Nepali society can never lift itself out of poverty if our leadership continues to embrace this culture of ‘abject’ begging. Our leadership’s attitude and the subsequent system it has built accepts donors as gods. This has created a extractive model of opaque (non-transparent), corrupt and unequal donor driven society. The government and non-governmental institutions engineered around foreign aid have in the last five decades remained largely unanswerable to the people of Nepal (It is been 14 years since we had any locally elected officials-leaders to guide us). Our rulers have consistently over-promised and under-delivered specially when it comes to use of foreign aid. One simple proof lies in the much hyped earthquake preparedness campaign with the help of millions of dollars of foreign aid. Look where it got us!

Bibeksheel Nepali Values

A toastmaster is a nonprofit educational organization that operates clubs worldwide for the purpose of helping members improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills.

Bibeksheel Nepali has taken the initiative to start the club in Nepali (Nepali Toastmasters). It is gradually leading to get more formalized with the help of Shangri-La Toastmasters. As Bibeksheel Nepali is a rising political force, we wanted to create leaders who could speak out their actions. We believe, to be a national leader, one need to communicate purely in their national language. We have a habit of saturating our Nepali speeches with English words. To remove this flaw, and to improve our Nepali Public speaking skills, Nepali Toastmasters was initiated in Bibeksheel Nepali. Every Toastmasters journey begins with a single speech. Toastmasters Nepal meets every week for one and a half hours and follow a basic agenda prepared by the club.

So far we’ve had four meetings and a combined attendance of more than a hundred people. This club is not only for the ones who want to be leaders, but for everyone who want to improve their Nepali public speaking skills.

The quake, which was followed by a second major tremor on May 12, brought down buildings across the country including historic temples, monuments and the much-loved Dharahara tower as tourists and locals climbed its more than 200 steps.  After the national anthem was played on loudspeakers, crowds surrounded the collapsed tower and observed 56 seconds of silence at 11:56, the moment the 7.8-magnitude quake ripped through Nepal on April 25.

In Dec 2014, I was thrilled to know about Bibeksheel Nepali, a movement by the youths for new beginnings in the country. Though accidental how I met Ujwal dai, it was at a right time since I was at a crossroads, after spending more than 9 years in the US, of what wanted to do next in my life. Though it was hard to truly pursue what I wanted in Nepal, Bibeksheel Nepali gave me a lot of hope and inspiration that there are many youths like me who feel that we all need to be the uniting force with the determination to pursue what is right for the country. I got actively engaged when I started volunteering of Bibeksheel Nepali on 13 May, a day after the second big earthquake hit. I immediately got a project to coordinate all relief efforts from different groups and organizations. In a collaborative manner, we wanted to create a platform where everyone could share his or her information on relief and rehabilitation work. We connected with 17 organizations and 12 individuals leading their own groups. Since then, our list

of alliances has been growing. In this collaborative work, we had major discussions with quakemap.org, sodhpuch.com, leapfrog and other IT professionals in creating an IT platform to coordinate all data on relief work between the different organizations. The open program relievo.org was created through the works of Mr. Shakti Shrestha (Shangrila Microsystem), Mr. Dixanta Shrestha (LeapFrog) and Mr. Tanka Poudel.

We also successfully held a program along with a few other organizations to inspire and keep the enthusiasm and strength of volunteerism in youths alive. We had over 300 attendees while 40 unknown faces of volunteers spoke on their volunteerism experience. You can watch the video in the Facebook page: Nepali Volunteer (community).

With the upsurge of Bibeksheel Nepali supporters throughout, there was an increasing need to coordinate with Nepalese based out of the country, who were also our strongest benefactors. Hence, I continued to work in alliance building and manage our work internationally as well. Our international Bibeksheel Nepali units prior to the earthquake were USA, S. Korea, Germany and UAE. Now we have UK and AUS chapter established. We have interests in Japan, Malaysia, Qatar, Russia, Ukraine and India for a unit formation.

Our Bibeksheel Nepali leaders abroad are: Sanjay Rimal for the USA team, Abhisek Basnyat for UK, Karma Tamang for the Germany team, Sujal Shrestha for the UAE team while Kiran Adhikari has been actively leading South Korea

chapter. It has been great working with exceptional Nepalese in and out of the country, and I endeavor to learn more about the different lives of our Nepalese brother and

sisters all over the world and how Bibeksheel Nepali can help fulfill their dreams for Nepal.

25th April 2015, an evolution in Bibeksheel caused the realization of professional desks working to facilitate overall activities. Human resource, monitoring and control, advocacy and policy, Finance, Fund raising, International alliance, IT, Media and Communication, Medical are some of the major desks working to devise instruments and policies to frame Bibeksheel activities into a structure to achieve objectives. The realization of such desks developed a transition period which necessitates pragmatic approaches. Coordination between the desks are being achieved by regular “scrum meeting” every day in which we briefly discuss: “what one did yesterday, what one will do today and what are the plans of tomorrow?” lead by CEO. This meeting is gradually making desks understand the vulnerabilities and developing remedies. Also gradually helping to understand core area of the desk and overcome task overlapping.

We believe in any-time any-where work. This idea propagated use of information technology; we use Google docs for day to day works which is creating a virtual environment and ease in communication. We share plans, policies, proposals, and schedules and take approvals making information accessible. This approach has also made ease to develop a participative culture in which we ask for feedback

from relevant stakeholders before implementing them. Current achievements after professional desks are volunteer management policy, performance

management system, delegation of authority,

reimbursement of expenses carried by volunteers, monitoring and control framework, qualitative expansion in alliancing and fund raising. Framing policies and SOP’s might create some resistance but our participative approach is gradually evolving us towards more professional, more accountable, more reliable, more transparent and more trustworthy Bibeksheel.
