Absence from School It is a requirement that ALL absence(s) from school be explained. There are 3 ways this can be done:

1. Replying to the SMS you receive. 2. Contacting the school by phone or fax on the day of or within a few days after

absence. 3. Providing your child with a note to give to their roll call teacher.

It’s not OK to stay away!

Did you know…? An attendance of just 85% equates to:

An average of 7.4 days per term absent from school. 5 lessons a day x 7.4 days = 37 lessons lost each term. 7.4 days x 4 school terms = 30 days (ie: 6 weeks) per year absent. 30 days per year x 5 lessons a day = 150 lessons (more than 150 hours)

lost each year. Annette Quiney

On 22 May, 12 students from Years 7 to 12 attended the Secondary Schools‘ Day of the Sydney Writers‘ Festival. This annual event provides secondary students with the opportunity to hear writers discuss the inspirations for their work and to give students tips on their own writing. This year the Festival had a great line-up and students were able to listen to Eoin Colfer (Artemis Fowl series), J.C.Burke (The Red Cardigan and The Story of Tom Brennan), Mal Peet (Life: An Exploded Diagram and Exposure), and Lucy Christopher (Stolen). Our students were also excited when they discovered that they were able to meet their favourite author and have their books signed. All of the books listed above are available in the school library. A 2nd Hand Uniform Shop is currently being established and will be run by a parent

volunteer. It will stock both junior and senior uniforms. Any donations can be

handed to the office. All money raised will go towards P&C Fundraising.

IDAHO Day at GPHS

May 17th was International Day Against Homophobia. Glenmore Park High School was proud to recognise this important day with a school assembly run by several senior students. Two Yr 12 students took the opportunity to speak out against bullying and negativity aimed at people based on their sexuality. The speech presented by Andrew and Shannon focused on the concept of inalienable rights. Everyone has the right to feel safe and respected, no matter who they are. Andrew and Shannon are to be commended for their heartfelt words and their genuine desire to help make the world a more accepting and positive place to live in. A group of Year 11 girls performed a beautiful rendition of ‗Perfect‘ by Pink that warmed the hearts of many in the hall that day. Emily, Lauren and Paige chose this song themselves. Their enthusiasm and empathetic attitudes are a true credit to these lovely students. IDAHO is a day that has been recognised and acknowledged worldwide since 2006.It gives people a chance to stand up against discrimination, intolerance and unfairness. It is a day to send a very simple message to all members of the Glenmore Park High School community you are safe and you are respected.

Debating Success!

Each year a debating competition is run throughout the Western Sydney region. Schools between the inner west and the upper Blue Mountains compete against each other in order to win the Blacktown City Council Years 7/8 Debating perpetual trophy. Glenmore Park High School entered four teams initially. After progressing from the original Gala Day, four students out of all these were selected to be part of the final team which would continue on into the next stage of the competition. Mikaylah Debrincat, Mackenzie Delforce, Emily Elliott and Yasmin Zelko continued to win until they finally made it to the Grand Final. This final debate for the competition was held at Blacktown Council Chambers. Up against Winmalee High School, the girls found out on the day that they were to debate on the affirmative side of the topic 'That the legal drinking age should be raised to 21'. All four students did a fantastic job. Their analytical prowess, their wealth of knowledge and all the hard work they had put in after school in the weeks before the debate really came through. Mikaylah, Mackenzie, Emily and Yasmin displayed a high level of maturity, talent and enthusiasm. When the adjudicator stood up to announce the outcome of the debate, it was clear that GPHS had won. This perpetual shield has been won mostly by selective high schools over the last decade and a half. Now, it will spend the next twelve months at Glenmore Park High School to remind us of the wealth of talent and academic ability possessed by our students. R. Langham English/History Teacher

TAS Faculty

As part of the TAS Faculty‘s Authentic Learning Program Years 7 & 8 were given the challenge of who could build the strongest bridge. They were given strict guidelines: 150 paddle pop sticks, glue and the measurements of 100mm wide and 500mm long. Throughout Term 1 student‘s learnt about bridge design from its early creation to modern structures of today. They discovered how successful bridge design and materials have changed, but also bridge designs that failed. Through this design process students experimented and evaluated the best design for their bridge. As students were placed into teams, the competitive nature soon arrived with Year 8 determined to beat Year 7. The level of engagement from students‘ in all classes was impressive. They had to work together to research the history of bridges and then individually research a bridge design of their choice. Finally, they had to justify their final bridge design, and evaluate the whole design process. Load testing the bridges again became competitive as nervous teams watched their bridges tested until breaking point. There were individual winners in each class and an overall winner for that year..
