Special Topic 2015 :

‘The Perfect Storm’ 2030

Imagine a world of 8 billion intsead of 7.2 billion, food, energy and water will be scarce and eventually run out. This may seem impossible, but this is what’s predicted to happen in the year 2030. The world will need toproduce around 50 percent more food and energy alond with 30 percent more fresh wtaer while adapting toclimate chnage. There is a risk that climate change will have a major impact on food production - for exampleby killing off the coral reefs or by either weakening or strengthening monsoon rains. Also, some scientists arepredicting that the Arctic will be ice-free by 2030, which could accelerate global warming by reducing theamount of the sun's energy that is reflected back out of the atmosphere. Not only is the world's populationpredicted to grow but more people are moving to live in cities, The growth of cities will accelerate the scarcityof fresh water sources and more people will be forced to move as water becomes scarce. Even though it mayseem like we have all lots of time, time is already running out and there’s much to be doen and many things tochange.

This threatens to create a ‘perfect storm’ of global effects. This year’s ILYMUN conference focused onthe perfect storm and the students held debates on how to make our world a better place and to try and stopthat from happening so it won’t become their future or their children’s future.

Taking place at the beautiful Hotel de Région on Friday 23rd, January was the ILYMUN opening ceremony.Attending the ceremony were 300 students from schools all over France, one from Tunisia and one from theCzech Republic. To start the ceremony the choir from the CSI sang three very moving songs which captivatedthe wide variety of ages in the audience. After the songs, the Chairperson made a speech about the main topicwhich was to be the focus of the 3-day long ILYMUN conference: 2030, The Perfect Storm. Next, theyshowed a video made by CSI students on the ILYMUN Press Team which presented the topic. The video wasvery well made and introduced everyone to the issues.

To close the Opening Ceremony a choir of primary students from the ISL sang a heartwarming song. Then the committees gathered together and the debating began….

The Directors :Marcie Zicari from Notre Dame International School in Paris and Matthew Tobin from Lycee

Victor Hugo in Toulouse were two directors taking part in ILYMUN 2015. They said that they encouragedtheir students to take part in ILYMUN to make them more aware of what is going on around them> They saidthat ILYMUN was very well run and that they were very much enjoying it. We also spoke to Elsa Lbarosse.Elsa is the secretary of the Anglophone section in CSI. She said that she had been very busy helping out withthe conference. Her job was to organize the different conferences so the deligates knew where to go, this washer seond time at the ILYMUN conference here in Lyon. Labrosse’s views on this year’s topic is to help reducethis fate of “The Perfect Storm”, she is going to try to be more environmentally friendly. She was very happy tosee all the young people come together and solve global problems.

Next we interviewed Mina Frost, a french and english student at Cité Scholaire International. She hasbeen apart of ILYMUN for 2 years and this was here 3rd conference this year. She was Head of Housing andDeputy of Admins. Her job during ILYMUN was mostly before the confrence. She sent emails to schools to askfor delegates to come, and then paired them up with hosts. Then after the debates she made sure the hostspicked up the right delegates. Mina believes that she can contribute to the 2030 storm by preparing people tomake a change.

Delegates :One deligate we interviewed was Nicholas Riley who was the delegate for Spain. Originally from

Chicago, IL (USA), and currently in 1ere at Lycée Ombrosa, this is his first year at Ombrosa. Riley’s views onIlYMUN’s 2015 topic, the perfect storm; 2030, is that it is a serious issue, and he has never seen anything likeit before. By debating on economic and social topics, and with new and upcoming ideas, Nicholas would like totake part and give some of best ideas to try and find a solution. His favorite parts of ILYMUN are that it is veryorganized and prepares him for the future. Nicolas encourages everyone to sign up for ILYMUN next year ifyou are eligable.

The second person we interviewed was Alexandro Nelson, a deligate representing Euthiopia. Comingfrom Bethesda, MD, USA and currently in 1ere and attending school at the International School of Lyon.During ILYMUN, Alexandro was in the enviornmental debate. With his first year taking part in the ILYMUNhe already has ideas on how to contribute to resolve global issues. ___________________________________________________________________________

Admins :There are three types of jobs for Admins: stay with the committees and make sure all the debating goes well,do the paperwork and deal with visitors or do odd jobs such as looking after the clothes in the cloakroom.Admins are also part of the GA (General Assembly), the most important meeting of the conference.

We interviewed Alexandra, a premiere student from the CSI. ILYMUN 2015 is Alexandra’s second yearas an Admin. Alexandra has been preparing for this conference for over a month, she has had several meetingswith the head admins, press team and others. Alexandra is quite positive about this conference and hopes totake part next year. She started ILYMUN because she likes that people speak english and she likes that theydebate for such an important reason. As an Admin she has to organinze and help delegates, help people whoare lost, and any other tasks that need completing.

Page 5: NewsBite - CSI Anglophone Section, Lyon · 2015. 2. 2. · education, equality, human rights, new technologies ... year’s theme is unique, for the delegates will be thinking of

We also got to interview Jack, who is also from CSI. He is an admin like Alexandra and this is his firstyear in ILYMUN. His favourite tasks as an Admin are doing tours. He finds that there are not many hardthings to do as an Admin but sorting the luggage for the delegates was pretty hard since there was a lot. Hewants to continue next year as well, and wants to progress so he can become the head of the delegates. It wasreally interesting to interview Jack.

Julian is a Cite Scholaire International student participating as an admin. He isFrench/Australia/American and has big dreams of becoming a lawyer or journalist. As an admin his job was tohelp people find their way around, making sure nobody sat in the front ofthe auditorium, giving translators topeople and telling the families where to sit. It is his first year in MUN, he finds the conferences veryinteresting and he would like to be a delegate next year to see how it works.

We were lucky to have been able to interview the busy Admins. It was really interesting learning abouttheir roles and what they do for ILYMUN.

Committee Chairs :Next we spoke to Committee Chairs Victor Gondry (Political and Territorial), Sevanna Oroudjian

(Security Council), Sydney Vennin and Amalie Hellman (Development) and Ramzi Talaa (General Assembly). The Committee Chairs open and direct the debates and tell delegates when to speak. The Chairs were verybusy on Friday morning but took some time to tell us how they are very excited for this years ILYMUNconference. They told us that they took part as it helped them to meet new people and they applied to beChairs as the liked to listen to the debates. They all felt they were involved with something very importantwhich could potentially change our world

_____________________________________________________________________

Press Team :Next, we interviewed two girls from the CSI press team: Newsbite’s own Emma Eberhardt and

Emmanuelle Dot. It’s their first year doing this job at the Conference, although Emmanuelle had been adelegate once, but she wanted to try something new. They said there are different types of press in theconference: written press, photo press and video press. They work in the written press. They are eager to dothis job because it’s the only way for Emma (who wants to become a journalist) to practice herwriting/interviewing skills. On the press team, a lot of creativity can be done to the topics of the articles. Thisis also partially why they like their job, because they are free and trusted. They are enthusiastic aboutcontinuing next year, as they enjoyed their work very much The press team work on posters or videos toinform the public and the delegates of ILYMUN 2015. The team worked during the entirety of the debate, taking photos, filming, interrogating, updating news and writing articles.

Guest Speaker :

The honorary speaker at the ceremony was Monsieur Peter Barabas, who is the Editor in Chief ofEuronews in Lyon. He spoke about the main news events from the past year, and how the effects of globalwarming were the most important issue facing the next generation. Also, how events like ILYMUN were soimportant to the future of our world. Mr. Barabas kindly took some time out to speak to the Newsbite team about what they can do to make adifference through jornalism and reporting. It was an honour to speak to such him and we would sincerly liketo thank him for his time.

My Personal Experience of ILYMUN 2015 by The ILYMUN Newsbite Team :

It was amazing to meet the people taking part, and to ask them what their jobs consist of. It was a greatexperience and a real inspiration, definately an ecouragement to take part in ILYMUN, either as an Admin, orin another role.-Pénélope Revel and Emma Guilleminot

I watched part of a debate. In this debate there were about 45 people who each represented countries, which

I was lucky to have interviewed the Admins and I wanted to say thank you to them for taking time out of theirbusy schedules to be interviewed. I had a lot of fun and it was really interesting learning about the Admins andwhat they do for ILYMUN . I would like to take part in ILYMUN when I get to Lycee. - Rachel Mery

UN outline 8 goals to accomplish

The United Nations (UN) has set eight targets to accomplish before the end of 2015. In 2002, the UnitedNations Millennium campaign was created. The Millennium Project focuses on eight different problems thatneed to be addressed, for example, ensuring environmental sustainability to improve our relationship with theenvironment. Another of their goals is to combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases to ensure the qualityof life by informing people about the dangers of their actions and improve the access to medical care. Theremaining goals include eradicating extreme poverty and hunger as well as achieving universal primaryeducation, promoting gender equality and empowering women, reducing child mortality, improving maternalhealth and, lastly, global partnership for development.

The two CM2 Anglophone classes have been preparing posters on the 8 different millennium goals. Theposters were displayed on the 23rd of January 2015 at the Hotel de Région near Confluence. Employees ofHotel de Région voted for their favourite poster and one poster of each class will win a prize. Who will win?

Below is an example of just one of the brilliant posters devised by the CM2s
