President’s LetterDear HCE Members and Friends,

Can we trust that winter is almost over? I can remember a snowstorm in May back in the late 40’s and 32 degrees the morning in May when our family hosted Breakfast on the Farm. This year has been very unusual with 50 degree weather in February. Because of the warm temperatures, the trees were budding early so we didn’t tap our maple trees. Hopefully spring will really come when it is supposed to. The calendar says March 20, we’ll wait and see.

All of our members have been busy working on projects this winter and they deserve a standing ovation. We have future projects coming up and we hope everyone will get involved.

Is that a gentle touch? Was that a helping hand? How did these come to me? Ah, yes…through HCE. What is this time and talent all about? And turning a NOTHING into something? I don’t know how this came to be. Ah, yes…through HCE. For laughter, love and care abound This truly is a better place I now can clearly see Ah, yes…through HCE.

I wish you all a happy spring and relaxing days this summer.

Dear Home and Community Education Members,

Change is good…even as I write this letter I have seen change in a manner of hours. When I arrived at the office this morning the ground was covered with snow. As I write this at the end of the day, the snow has disappeared and there are lots of messy things on the ground…twigs..leaves…accumulations.

When I arrived at the office this morning my office was fairly in order – then the moving crew came and we rearranged my office to build a stronger sound barrier so that people can’t hear my conversations in the office next door.

Two examples of change – one I had no control over and one that I kind of have control over! Two recycling bins later and two boxes of old binders later, I have seen some change in my office. I still need to get things organized a little more and it will be a work in progress.

When you come to our office you will see some other changes as well… We have some new staff that we are excited to have join our team since last fall.

Ina Montgomery is the new Program Assistant and she works with the financials and office management details.

Kayla Viste is the Interim 4-H Youth Educator who is working with MaryBeth (Seib)Wohlrabe on the 4-H Youth Education outreach programs. Kayla is working with the 4-H Clubs, summer camp and other outreach efforts. MaryBeth got married in January –so she is still the same person with the same job title, just a different last name!

Becky Zoglman has joined our staff to take on the role of Education and Communication Specialist at 80% time. Becky is the person that has taken on the role of our social media and marketing and will be working with the HCE Newsletter committee to design and draft your newsletters.

Allyson Watson is our Community Resource Development Educator who is replacing Jim Resick who retired last summer. Allyson will be working 50% time in Winnebago and 50% time in Outagamie County. We are working out the logistics of what it means to have a job share with another county.

And finally today Kaitlin Bricco joined the team as our Horticulture Assistant, working 50% time as a county employee.

We are very fortunate to have added the staff we have and hope that we will be constant with this lineup of staff until the end of the year. In the meantime, nEXT Generation will be introducing changes to how we will be staffed and deliver programs in 2018. Many details will be developed and announced in the next nine months. Joan Behle, Vicki Handschke and Amy Beck will continue their support in the front office as office assistants. Zen Miller and Kevin Jarek will also remain in their roles until the end of the year. The FoodWIse program will continue on with Evan Groth and Kris Soper. I will continue as the Family Living Educator and Advisor to HCE and Department Head until December 31st. We will keep you posted as the change evolves!!

Melting snow happens much quicker on a warm day and the change is evidenced quickly. The changes in program are not happening that swiftly. We have been told we will have a UW Extension office in each county in the state, we are not sure how it will look or be staffed. Thank you for your support as we move forward and the change transition continues on.

Sincerely,

Karen DickrellAdvisor to HCEFamily Living Educator and Department Head

Upcoming ProgramsOn the Move and in the GrooveFebruary 28 to May 27, 2017By JoAnn Blonien, via wahceinc.org

Family and Community Life will again be focusing on walking and exercise as a countywide activity. Any activity you do between February 28 and May 29 can be counted. This includes walking, cleaning, gardening, dancing, swimming, and you-name-it exercise of any kind. Each 20 minutes equals 1 point, for example, one hour equals 3 points. Please report your totals in points, not hours.

All forms for individuals or groups are available on-line, or you may develop your own...as long as you use points for your totals. Remember, one point for every 20 minutes of activity.

LInda Biese will compile reports at the county level and she will send them to the Vice President for Family and Community Life. Your reports should show totals for each individual. Remember to include the name, address, county, phone or email of the person sending the report.

In 2016 there were 33 counties that reported participation in ‘On the Move and in the Groove’ with total points at 136,834, up from 98,989 in 2015! Way to go! I’m sure we will break 150,000 points next year with everyone Movin’ and Groovin’!

The winners for 2016 were Kewaunee County with 19,713 points and Brown County with 12,240 points. Outaga-mie and Rock Counties were not far behind, so let’s keep this competition going for everyone’s good health and well being.

PLEASE forward your County reports to me by June 10th, 2017. This is very important because our State Presi-dent needs the information for the NVON Conference. These numbers look good on our report for NVON.

THANK YOU for your participation and looking forward to 2017!

Feature ReportBy Judy Asman, Individual Member

As winter winds down, some of us look eagerly for seed catalogs to appear in the mailbox so we can start plan-ning our flower and vegetable gardens. For me, it is Road Scholar catalogs and flyers so I can compile a list of programs to check out.

“What do you want to learn?” is the question that motivates nonprofit Road Scholar to create the greatest col-lection of learning adventures you’ll find anywhere. With classrooms as big as the Grand Canyon, as historic as Gettysburg and as fascinating as the Everglades, they guarantee you will love learning with them. With 15 Road Scholar Programs under our belt, my husband and I totally agree with them.

Our latest program was Glory Days of the Railroad based in White River Junction, Vermont. Along with a wealth of seminars about the history of the area as well as railroads, we journeyed on three trains: the Conway Scenic Railroad, the Mt. Washington Cog Railway and Amtrak on smooth quarter mile rails. Our new friends included a magician/psychic with an interest in Houdini, a doctor and his physical therapist wife, two widows who had been college roommates, a retired female Methodist minister who travels in a camper van and an amazing woman who has opened her heart and home to over 100 foster children. There were many interesting conversations around the table as we enjoyed delicious nutritious meals.

HCE also gives us a great deal of education throughout the year. Programs are planned to give us an opportunity to stretch our brains and give us new information.

It’s never too late to learn something new, and maybe make a new friend on the process.

Thank YouNorthesast District Book Drive Deemed a Huge Success

The WAHCE Northeast District Fall Book Drive has been deemed a huge success. The Book Drive was held in conjunction with the 2016 Northeast District fall meeting. The Calumet County Association of Home and Com-munity Education (CAHCE) who were the hosts of the Northeast District fall meeting sponsored the Book Drive. The Book Drive was held with two missions to accomplish. The two missions were a Book Drive to collect new or gently used books to supplement a sparsely filled library in a Wisconsin school and to collect monies to purchase books to fill a library in a third-world country.

HCE members from the eight counties in the Northeast District donated 3,173 books over late summer/fall of 2016 that were collected at the fall Northeast District meeting held on October 20 in Brillion. The new and gently used books collected were a wonderful assortment of preschool through young adult fiction and nonfic-tion books. In November 2016, the books were delivered to Luther Burbank Elementary School in Milwaukee. 87.67% of Burbank’s students are economically disadvantaged. The school is using the books to fill their school library along with incentives for award programs and as gifts for children so they continue reading in their home environment. A thank you note was received from Pam Locket, Library Instructional Aide at Luther Burbank El-ementary School with the closing line reading, “Your group is amazing. All I can say is keep on making the world a better place because you have made a huge impact right here in our own state. I am sending each one of you a huge hug with my sincerest thanks.”

Hope North, a school in Uganda was chosen as the recipient of the monies collected at the Northeast District fall meeting. The monies collected will be used to purchase books for the library at Hope North School. Monetary donations were collected from the Calumet and Door County HCE Associations along with three individual HCE members. In addition, a silent auction was held at the Northeast District fall meeting with all proceeds going to the Hope North School library fund. To learn more about Hope North visit www.hopenorth.orgTHANK YOU…THANK YOU…THANK YOU to all individuals and County HCE Associations who contributed book and monetary donations to the WAHCE Northeast District Book Drive. Your generous donation has impacted lives in our own state of Wisconsin and the country of Uganda that truly are making an impact in a life of a child.

Executive Board ReportWisconsin Bookworms

“Reading to children is the most satisfying volunteer work I have ever done.” All volunteer readers get a good feeling when reading to children, interacting with them and giving them their very own books. That is what Wisconsin Bookworms is all about and our county has been doing just that for 18 years. Throughtout the state of Wisconsin, with 40 counties par-ticipating, the 750,000 books will be read and given out in the month of May.

“Thank you”For donations we received $200 from St. Bernards Crafty Ladies and $25 from the American Legion Auxiliary in Kimberly.

Our biggest fundraiser is the Quilt Raffle, which started in January and will go until late April. You were each giv-en 15 tickets to sell or buy. We ask those that can sell more, please contact Linda 920-833-2618, Carol Theobald 920-984-3344 or Marcie Suprise 920-757-5407. Last year you did a great job by selling 1,065 tickets and took in $1,779. We will not have matching funds this year, so we need to do our best again this year.

Prizes: 1st Packer Quilt (100X100) 2nd Packer Quilt and Pillow (60X62) 3rd Sports Quilt (65X80) 4th Sports Quilt (48X60) 5th Packer Quilt (44X60) 6th Sports Quilt (54X62) 7th Wisconsin Badger CenterpieceRiver Rail donated an Aaron Rodgers Jersey and is selling tickets for HCE. Thanks to Dick.

In December Judy and Marcie went to Lambeau Field to accept the $2,000 grant from the Green Bay Packer Foundation. All the hours Judy spent on writing the grant paid off. Good work to both Judy Asman and Marcie Suprise.

Fascinating Facts

Our Logo

The roof of the home symbolizes our past heritage with Extension Homemakers. The letters H (Home) C (Community) and E (Education) make it a sutiable logo by the state, county and club. The house without walls confirms a commitment to membership open to all, regardless of race, color, creed, religion, sex, age, handicap or national origin.

Picture Perfect

Thank you to Outagamie County HCE members for conducting two workshops at the WAFCS State Con-ference held in Appleton in March.

REFRIGERATOR & FREEZER STORAGE CHART

Since product dates aren’t a guide for safe use of a product, consult this chart and follow these tips. These short but safe time limits will help keep refrigerated food 40° F (4° C) from spoiling or becoming dangerous.

• Purchase the product before “sell-by” or expiration dates. • Follow handling recommendations on product. • Keep meat and poultry in its package until just before using. • If freezing meat and poultry in its original package longer than 2 months, overwrap these packages

with airtight heavy-duty foil, plastic wrap, or freezer paper, or place the package inside a plastic bag.
