Hi-Tech Gasket’s Omax WaterjetManufacturing Shims, Dovetailed Gaskets and much more...

Hi-Tech Gaskets manufactures an extensive range of standard and custom gaskets in-house using our Omax waterjet. The waterjet allows Hi-Tech Gaskets to cut not only standard composite and rubber materials, but also allows us to manufacture metal gaskets. Through increased understanding and research of the waterjet, Hi-Tech Gaskets has determined that the waterjet is capable of cutting through metal up to 12’’ thick. This is 6 times greater then previously capable.

When customers require gaskets larger then the waterjet’s working surface area, 60” x 135”, Hi-Tech Gaskets can produce them in a dovetail style. Dovetail style is when a gasket is cut into multiple sections, to be pieced together on-site. Joints are usually placed in the middle of a gaskets’ cross section, depending on the placement of the bolt-holes. Gaskets with a thicker cross section may require two joints on each section to ensure stability.

Metal Canned WiperWipers are primarily designed to stop contaminants from entering a cylinder on the rod. The lip of a Metal Canned Wiper is rigid enough to handle tough scraping environments such as wet/dry mud and ice, yet sensitive enough to exclude fine dust and/or moisture.

Loaded U-CupsLoaded U-cups are primarily designed for dynamic reciprocating applications. The O-ring loader makes this seal excellent for low-pressure rod and piston applications. As the system pressure increases, so does the force on the Loaded U-Cup loading lips. Sealing force automatically compensates for the higher pressure, maintaining a positive seal.

Buffer SealsBuffer seals are available for both pistons and rods; however, the majority of our stock consists of rod seals. Buffer seals in rod applications are designed to absorb pressure fluctuations when working under high-load conditions. This serves the purpose of increasing the lifespan of the rod seal.

O-RingsO-ring grooves allow the O-ring to be squeezed diametrically out-of-round even before the pressure is applied. The distortion of the O-ring’s resilient elastic compound fills the leakage path, thus, creating a seal.

Wear Rings Wear rings help keep the piston centered, which allows for even wear and pressure distribution on the seals. Popular wear ring materials include glass filled Nylon, bronze filled PTFE, glass filled PTFE and more. Wear rings are available in butt cut, angle cut and step cut styles.

Piston SealsPiston rings provide low friction and have a strong chemical resistance. By changing the seal materials we can change the temperature range, frictional characteristics, extrusion resistance and wearability of the piston ring.

Technically SpeakingCast Moulding

This edition of Technically Speaking will continue with the fourth installment in a six part series on moulding techniques. Previous editions have introduced five different types of moulding techniques, and covered compression and injection moulding. This installment will discuss cast moulding.

Liquid cast moulding typically offers the most economical tooling costs and is ideal for short to medium production runs and prototypes. There are two main types of cast moulding, open casting and pressure casting. Open casting is when a liquid mixture is poured into a mould that does not have a lid or cover, and is allowed to cure. Pressure casting is when a liquid mixture is poured into a cavity and which is then closed and pressurized. Pressure casting is ideal for more complex components.

A variety of materials can be used to manufacture cast-moulded parts, including urethane. Hi-Tech Seals’ urethane division creates custom urethane compounds to meet the customer’s needs. All components of the custom urethane, including base polymer, resin, activators, plasticizers and custom colour are carefully mixed together. Cure times vary depending on the material type and size of the mould.

With open casting, air bubbles rise to the mould’s surface and pop, leaving a smooth and glossy surface. Occasionally, the caster will need to pass a propane flame over the surface of the part to change its surface tension, which helps to dissipate the bubble. With pressure casting, the pressure collapses the air bubble into the solution or material, leaving the final product virtually bubble free.

Due to the nature of open casting it can be difficult to achieve a perfectly level top part of a component. Urethane components that require a precise thickness can be machined on the open side. When this is required the mould is made deeper to allow for machining. Depending on the durometer of the urethane components, they can be finished by a knife, sawed, drilled, grounded, sanded, and milled.

Hi-Tech Seals’ employees continue to support local events and charities. In May, Becky Doiron and her fellow team members participated in the 2014 Relay For Life. Relay for Life is a 12 hour, over-night event that raises funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.

In June, Tikina Gordey participated in the MS Bike Tour. This two-day event consisted of a 184 km ride from Leduc to Camrose. All funds raised are put toward providing services for people living with MS and MS research.

Also in June, employee Kyle Sturko’s cousin participated in the Gutsy Walk for Crohn’s and Colitis in support of Kyle’s battle with Crohn’s Disease. Overall Hi-Tech employees donated over $2000 to the three events.
