NEWS FROM THE COMMITTEE

From the Chairman

his month we are welcoming Jan Brown as our new Speaker Secretary. The Committee was delighted

to co-opt her into the post and we hope she will enjoy her new role.

You will see elsewhere in this newsletter that Ian Newman has resigned as the CoG of the Computer

Group. He has been doing the job since the group was formed and I would like to thank him for all his work

over the years. It is possible that a new computer group might form in the Autumn with a new CoG; we

have also discussed the possibility of a group to look at Photoshop.

Our CoGs are the life-blood of the U3A. As well as Ian, recently Jackie Jones (Wine Group) and Elizabeth

Eastwood (Walking Group) have stood down, and Marilyn Corbett (Weekenders) is looking for a

replacement. We sincerely thank all of them and, indeed, all the CoGs still in post.

I enjoy our meetings, catching up with old friends and meeting new people. There is always something

new to learn or some amusing tale to be heard. Our speaker last month made me realise how much I take

for granted about our town. Lucy Bettley talked about the role of the Citizens’ Advice Bureau (she is the

manager of the Maldon office) and was informative and interesting. I had not appreciated how many, and

how varied, problems the CAB can help with.

After my feeble attempt to organise the audio/visual equipment last month we thought it would be a good

idea if several people were trained to set up the equipment. If you would learn to do this please let me

know. In fact if you would like to help our U3A in any way please email me or tell any member of the

Committee, don’t be shy!

he design of the Heybridge U3A News Sheet, and the reports that it contains, continues as a full-page layout. I would ask contributors to limit their photos to pictures of U3A generated activities and not copy

pictures from Websites as, when published, this may be contrary to Copyright laws. Contributions can be up to 400 words without photo or 300 with photo. Information about the Committee Members and their reports can be found in the first few pages. The back page shows the Diary for the months of July and August Please keep the Editor up to date with any interesting stories, relevant pictures or anything that relates to the Heybridge U3A, the Association of Essex U3As or the U3A movement as a whole. Please send details to me by email with ‘Heybridge U3A’ in the title.

Contact me, Geoff Hadley, 01621 852494 or by Email [email protected]

From the Membership Secretary

e were pleased to welcome 2 new members and one visitor to our June meeting, taking our total membership to 149. New members are always welcome – if you know someone who would like to

find out more about our U3A, encourage them to attend a monthly meeting as a guest. There is no need to book – just turn up and sign in. [email protected]

Interest Group Coordinator

am checking that all groups that use the Meeting and Claydon Rooms at the Plantation Hall have completed their Risk Assessment Forms which are needed by the Secretary at Plantation Hall office, and

am waiting for their reply. There will be a vacancy for the Weekenders Group CoG this year so please see Marilyn Corbett if you are interested to learn more. Also the Petanque group will have a change of CoG later this year but discussions are already under way. My name is on Page 1 of the Newsletter with email address or on the last page inside the diary.

Please could I remind all CoGs to tell our Treasurer, Jill McGregor, in writing (email acceptable) when booking or cancelling a room for a group meeting. This applies to all rooms (other than in someone’s house), not just to rooms in Plantation Hall. It is important that you tell Jill when booking the room as all U3A bookings must be sanctioned by the committee. If you cancel a room without telling the Treasurer you could be liable for any amount charged by the venue.

Technical Adviser Help required We are still seeking a Technical Adviser with some IT skills who would be able to

a) look after our equipment, such as the laptop, projector and microphone, ensuring that they are set up as required for our monthly meetings

b) advise the Committee on IT issues such as computer and website. If you are able to help, please contact [email protected] ; tel: 01621 850310

Programme for July - December 2016

July: Our Summer Fun meeting will include a recital by our very own Ukulele Group (now taking bookings from other organisations!) and entertainment by a cast of some gifted members, as well as a delicious summer tea.

August: Peter Jones will talk to us about ‘How to do Everything and Be Happy’. Peter comes very highly recommended and talk should be amusing as well as interesting.

September: Another speaker who comes highly recommended - Tracy Mackness will talk about the Giggly Pig Company. Tracy has led a colourful life and shares some of her experiences with us in this talk.

November Linda and Peter Wells Living on a barge in France. A talk with slides about their experiences.

December: The Dengie Duo, who are Jon Greaves and Angela Gardner, will entertain us with songs from the fifties, sixties and seventies as well as traditional Christmas fare. This afternoon promises to put us in the party mood.

GROUP REPORTS

Art (Painting) Group

We've had smaller than usual gatherings throughout June, what with holidays and other summertime diversions .Now, as I write this, Wimbledon is underway so no doubt we'll be missing a few more friends this week and next! However, being thin on the ground has its advantages if you are a painter - more room to spread your elbows and all your equipment. And it is quieter too, so no excuses for not getting one's head down and concentrating on one's latest masterpiece. Summer flowers seem to be a popular theme right now. And, of course, we're delighted to hear that our U3A Study Day on October 25 features no fewer than four art sessions, each one offering morning and afternoon classes. So if you haven't put brush to paper before, there will be several opportunities to give it a go.

Bird Watching Group

Boat trip Graham Parker

he group had 2 outings this month. At the beginning of June we went to EWT Blue House Farm in North Fambridge to see if we could see the barn owls that are busy bringing up chicks. We were taken

round the reserve to visit No. 1 hide out on the scrape. Here we saw avocets nesting with, close to them, oyster catchers and a common tern. But no owls…………….. We walked back across to the sea wall and were heading back to the cars when the male owl came out to hunt in the field alongside the path. Not only did we see him catch a vole, but one quick witted watcher logged onto the webcam online and was able to report that meal had been delivered to the chicks. Our second trip was from Mersea Island where we went out by boat to look for birds along Salcott Creek and Tollesbury. Although there seemed to be rather few birds about it is always interesting to see marshes and mud flats from a different angle. We might have been looking for birds but we were being closely watched ourselves. One young seal came quite close just to check us out and see if there was any food on offer. Thanks to Graham Parker for the photos this month “ If you would like to know more about our group then contact Maureen Lenoir ([email protected] )

Computer Group

ollowing another meeting where numbers were again very low, I am sorry to say that I have decided that this group has now outgrown its usefulness, especially in its current form. Over the life time of the

Computer Group, technology has become more varied with the introduction of Ipads, tablets, smart phones with a multitude of features such as built in cameras etc. These ongoing changes and associated issues now require a major learning exercise for me each month. The summer months are quiet months when holidays are taken and grandchildren are looked after and I cannot see the situation changing The money for the hire of the hall at nearly £10 per hour has to come from the few who attend the monthly meetings of the group. This subject of finance was discussed earlier this year and also during 2015 when an increased fee was proposed and put into effect. Therefore, the group will no longer meet on the third Thursday of each month and I have cancelled the regular booking for the Claydon Room with effect from 4th July. This does not mean that a newer and more up to date group with a new format could not be formed either on a Thursday afternoon or at some other time possibly starting after the summer months.

Over the time that I have been a CoG for this group, a third maybe and may be more of the Heybridge membership must have attended one or more of the monthly sessions. I hope that you all, who have attended the monthly meetings have learnt something either from me or from someone else, skills that they did not have before joining the group in the true self help spirit of the U3A.

I take this opportunity to thank all who have assisted and stood in for me over the years especially Peter and more recently Colin.

Ian Newman: Email [email protected] or phone 01621 891184.

Creative Writing Group

his month’s Creative Writing assignment was entitled 'Conversation'. Although only a few members of the group were present, there was a varied selection of 'conversation' themes to share with others. A

telephone conversation discussing a family breakdown, an overheard conversation about relationships that recalled a wonderful book a member had read, a conversation between teacher and pupil who was worried about how he had done in his exams, a comparison of the various forms of conversation i.e. social media, text messages, e mails, and typical conversations between a group of youngsters loitering on their way home from school. Over tea and biscuits much conversation was around the European Union referendum, and differing opinions on whether we leave or remain. Our next month’s topic was therefore decided as being ' The Result Thankyou Angela for your hospitality, again an enjoyable afternoon. Croquet Group

e have managed to play on both Thursdays this month and not cancel due to bad weather, although the first session was nearly cancelled, the rain stopped in time but it was very cold and some of us

wore gloves. The Club house was a very welcome sight at the end, where we all warmed up with hot drinks! I was unable to attend the second session but everyone managed to play, although wet underfoot at the start, the lawns soon drained and I understand Graham managed to win a hoop with a drop shot most impressive. If anyone would like to join us please contact me, you would be most welcome. We play on the first and third Thursday of each summer month; the aim is gentle exercise, good company and fun.

Family History Group

nfortunately, due to flooding, some of our members were stranded in their homes and were unable to get to the June meeting! Those who did make it to Plantation Hall struggled to find parking spaces as it

was also Polling Day! However, we welcomed new member, Mike, to our ranks. He has been researching his family tree for some years now and talked us through his record-keeping systems. I think we are all a little guilty of not keeping proper records - not only snippets of useful information but also of places searched where we did NOT find anything relating to our tree. If you are interested in tracing your family tree, please come along and join us.

French Conversation Group

At our June meeting, we read an article about ‘Le

Referendum Britannique’ from which we learnt that the French felt left out of the fun and wanted a referendum of their own. However, according to the article, they would vote to remain. We then moved on to the flooding of the Seine which caused so much chaos in Paris in early June. Finally, Pat N gave us an account of her recent trip to France, the highlight of which was a visit to Monet’s gardens at Giverny (pictured). Our July meeting is chez Pat N and August will be chez Linda.

French Improvers

ix of us met at George’s house In June where, as well as enjoying delicious biscuits, we practised speaking about our daily activities. For retired people, we all seem to be very busy, filling our days with

a variety of hobbies, sporting activities and child care responsibilities, plus a few household chores here and there. Our July meeting is chez moi and August will be chez Carol S. For further information about either French Group, please ring 01621 843581 or email [email protected]

Gardens Group

We had a lovely day out at Langley village gardens. Wickets was as beautiful as expected, and the other three gardens were also full of interest. Two were immaculate cottage gardens surrounding perfect country cottages, and the third an interesting work in progress. We had lunch at the village hall, and had to go back later, of course, to make sure they didn’t have too much cake left over.

The next visit is on Sunday 3rd July at 2pm to Little Myles, near Brentwood. This is a 3-acre garden containing many different ‘rooms’, including a jungle complete with animals.

Hope you will be able to come.

Italian Conversation

his Italian Conversation Group meets twice a month, usually on the first and third Monday of the month, at 10 am at my house. We are a small but friendly group of varied abilities who meet to practise

speaking Italian. We discuss many and varied subjects, including holidays, family triumphs and interesting items in the news, as well as occasionally revising points of grammar.

Local History Group

We had a lovely day to enjoy our visit to the Maldon Museum. For

some this was a return event, for others a new experience but I

think we all found plenty of interest. A few even spotted pictures

of family members or artefacts given by people they knew.

We shall next be visiting two contrasting churches, All Saints in

Great Braxted and St Nicholas in Little Braxted.

There are still a few places on our visit to Grange Barn and

Paycocks in Coggeshall on the afternoon of 22nd September [a

Thursday] if anyone would like to join us. If we have enough people we may also be able to do a morning

guided walk to see and learn more of this beautiful part of Essex.

Petanque Group

n the month of June we have been threatened with showers and still more are forecast for next Monday. Last week it was supposed to rain at 4pm, but 10 people turned up and we played until 4pm without

interruption and the rain came at 5pm, luckily. So we are now enjoying the warmer weather and one week we needed sunhats but otherwise it has been very pleasant on the Promenade. Occasionally we have a few spectators or sometimes a dog will venture onto the terrain hoping for a game with the metal boules. But they are usually called away and it causes an amusing incident. Anyone coming to the Terrain on July 11th will not find us as we will be playing in Heybridge Basin followed by a Raclette/Raclette meal in a members' garden when we have our annual change of venue in a French "ambiance". Please ask the CoG for location if you are a regular player and have booked as we need to know numbers in advance. Play will start at 11.00

Otherwise, new members are always welcome.

Photography Group

here were 12 members at our June Meeting in the Jubilee Lounge of the West Maldon Centre.

We viewed and discussed the photos taken for the assignment. The subject being – Photos taken at Goldhanger on our field trip in May. It was interesting to see the different approach used by members.

We then watched a short slide show on Camera Settings and discussed Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority and how to use the settings on our various cameras.

The assignment this month is to attempt using these setting to see how we get on and to take 1 photo using Auto, 1 Photo using Aperture priority and 1 photo using Shutter priority of the same subject in order that we can compare the results at the next meeting. Why not join us? We meet on the first Thursday of each month at 2.00 p.m.

By regularly meeting together and sharing our photos, we learn how to get better results from our own equipment. Our aim is to make all of our meetings entertaining, friendly and informative.

Anyone interested in joining or coming to see what we do can contact Norman Grove on 01621 842805 or by email [email protected].

Reading and Books Group

olidays took their toll on the numbers attending this month’s meeting. However those who did attend discussed the book for this month. This was Citadel by Kate Mosse. Set during the Second World

War, the story follows a group of women Resistance fighters trying to help people escape the Nazis in occupied France. Unlike our May read, which was a factual account of real people who risked their lives by hiding Jewish children from the Nazis, Citadel is a literary adventure with mystery, treachery and romance. With 915 pages, it was a long read which some failed to finish, but others were hooked and intend to read the other two books in the trilogy.

The next Book Group meeting will be held at Plantation Hall Heybridge on 20th July at 2.15pm.

Anyone wishing to join this group should contact Ann Lees 01245225153.

Scrabble Group

erhaps Scrabblers should greet each other with 'May the tiles be with you' before selecting their allocation of seven tiles to start the game. At the meeting this month the select few were challenged by

unhelpful combinations of letters: a rack full of vowels can make it difficult to form a word, giving rise to plaintive remarks. Despite this we rose to the challenge and fortified with tea/coffee and biscuits were still heads down at 4.00 pm. Why not join us on the third Tuesday of the month at the Plantation Hall, 2 -4 pm. Contact Linda Etherton for more information by email: [email protected] or telephone: 01621 843702

Technical Computing Group

e met as usual on the second Thursday but were reduced in numbers due to holidays and appointments that had to be kept. Even with a smaller group a most enjoyable meeting took place.

We, as a group, have been asked by the Heybridge U3A Committee to clean and resolve imperfections in the projected image from the Heybridge U3A own digital projector. The hand book, in digital format, was located on Ian’s laptop at the meeting and subsequently the Technical Manual was down loaded from the Internet. A copy of both documents will be downloaded onto the Heybridge U3A Computer at the next Technical Computer Meeting. To undertake the cleaning, appropriate cleaning materials (wipes, brush, fluid, blower etc) will need to be sourced and bought as necessary.

The other topic discussed was the availability of, and the download speeds available from, fibre broad band. Only one member of the group present had fibre broad band. The availability of and therefore the cost varied considerably over the Maldon area.

Report drafted by Ian Newman.

If you would like further information about the group or interested in joining our small group, please contact me, Colin, for details. You will be most welcome to join us. We meet in one of the group member’’ home, thereby minimises the costs incurred.

Our next meeting takes place on Thursday the 14th of July, new members are always welcome, please contact me for details..

Ten Pin Bowling

ur gathering on Tuesday 14th numbered 10 playing in 3 lanes of one 4 players and the other 2 with 3 players each. Our lane of 4 seemed to be the rogue one as it kept breaking down and the manager,

Leeroy, had to scramble around the back to release the bowling balls! I’m pleased to report he was unharmed following this!

Respectable scores were achieved with Graham beating Geoff’s personal best of 152 to become top scorer with 158. Closely followed was Chris with the top ladies score of 149.

As usual a good time was had by all and the game was followed with a chat over tea and biscuits!

The next meeting is on Tuesday 12th July at Madison Heights at 1.45 to start play at 2pm

New players always welcome no experience necessary!

Our June meeting was, as usual, lively. Barbara Barbrook came

in her position as CoG of CoGs and brought with her, her current

project, making Memorial poppies which were beautiful. She

kindly set to work helping one of our members learn the basic

crochet stitches needed for them. Thankyou Barbara. We

would like to welcome you back when you have a suitable free

afternoon in your very busy life.

Our photo this month is of the poppies, I hope that you like them

as much as we did. It demonstrates the difference between

Poppies Barbara Barbrook knitted and crocheted ones. See if you can spot which are which!

Ukulele Group UKE3A

Yes, that is the name by which our friendly little ukulele group is

fast becoming known. There are a lot of ukulele groups in Essex,

over 90 we're told, so it comes as a nice surprise when

organisations seeking a bit of entertainment for their event or party

come to us! On the morning of June 25th we entertained, or at least

we hope we did, visitors to Heybridge Basin Regatta - our very first

outdoor gig playing for the public at large. Only five of our original

ten members were able to attend that day, but we all had a good

time. On our last number we were joined by the hearty voices of a local shanty crew who were due to sing

after we finished. Sadly, the rain began bucketing down as we ate lunch in the Old Ship, just as the shanty

men were getting into their stride - and it hardly stopped all afternoon and all evening. But thanks, lads, for

your contribution to our effort.

In a month or two from now I hope to be concentrating on teaching new members who have never picked up a ukulele before, and who may have been put off attending while we prepared for our first public performances.

Call me now on 01621 859060 if you are interested.

lackwater plan to start a Cookery group in September to coincide with the start of the new school term and to have one, two hour meeting per month. Cooking will take place in the Upper Plume school

As soon as we know which evening(s) we are looking at, I’ll let you know. In the meantime, I would be pleased if you would circulate your members, put it in your newsletters, etc. so we can get some idea of how many people are interested. Please pass all names and phone numbers direct to Pat by email at [email protected] or by phone 01621 843099.
