Effective April 2012 SaskWater rates are go-ing up. SaskWater reports it has experienced increased operating costs on all of its systems due to rising electricity/energy costs, water treatment costs, purchased water increas-es and increased regulato-ry requirements. As well, SaskWater must make continued investments in capital upgrades, expan-sions and infrastructure replacements to support a growing customer base. The multi-year increase affects customers who do not have scheduled an-nual rate adjustments as a part of their agreement; this includes 23 commu-nities, fi ve rural munici-palities, 80 rural pipe-line groups, 10 industrial customers as well as 189 commercial and end user connections.

“SaskWater, like any utility provider, faces ris-ing operating costs, aging infrastructure and evolv-ing regulations,” Minister responsible for Saskatch-ewan Water Corporation Dustin Duncan says. “Safe, reliable, quality water is valuable to Sas-katchewan communities and the rates must refl ect the costs of providing that resource and provide for infrastructure renewals and expansion.” Rates will increase by seven per cent or nine per cent for potable (drink-ing) water customers for a total of 21 per cent and 27 per cent over three years. Non-potable customers

affected by the increase will see rates raised based on the cost of service in their given service area. The increases range from three per cent to 24 per cent over three years. The majority of water used by this group of customers is being accessed for indus-trial/commercial use. The 2012 potable water adjustment will result in an average increase of $4.26 a month. SaskWa-ter primarily provides water to municipalities and rural pipeline groups who make their own de-cisions on how increases are transferred to their individual household cus-tomers.

ALL ABOUT LITERACY – Sherrie Malinowski reads the first chapter of Frindle by Andrew Clements for the students of St. Michael’s School as part of the One School, One Book program. The School Community Council bought each student in the Yorkton school a copy of the book, which students will read each night before a family literacy night at the end of January themed around the book. St. Paul’s School and St. Henry’s in Melville are also participating in the event this month.

Local farmer the Canola KingWhen one strives to maximize their

productivity, extraordinary results can prevail. Such is the case for one Norquay farmer. Jordan Lindgren of Lindgren Grain Farms from Norquay has been crowned this year’s Hudye Soil Services 2011 “Canola King Challenge” winner. Lindgren achieved a yield of 69.27 bushels per acre on his farm in North East Saskatchewan. The Canola King Challenge in its 5th consecutive year is a great opportunity for local producers to test new manage-

ment practices and strategies in an attempt to achieve the highest canola yield possible. This includes, but is not limited to, genetics, seed treatments, chemistries, advanced fertility, with the use of micronutrients, fungicides, enhanced technologies and Agronomic Consulting says Braden Hudye – President of Hudye Soil Services. The Canola King Challenge winner is awarded a $5,000 travel voucher to a destination of their choice.

Out of the eight producers that par-ticipated in the 2011 challenge, Lindgren Grain Farms recorded the top yield with 69.27 bushels per acre. Even though Lindgren won the challenge, all the par-ticipants deserve recognition for their achievements and hard work that was put in to their 2011 crop says Hudye. “With the Saskatchewan Provincial average at just 32.2 bushels per acre in 2011, these eight producers proved to the rest of the province that higher canola yields are very possible when maximizing productivity, which in turn reduces the per bushel cost of produc-tion, a concept continually strived for in

the annual “Field of Dreams” project conducted by Hudye Soil Services.

With the holidays over and a new year starting, it’s a great time and a wonderful opportunity to stand back and ask your-self: “What can I change or do better in my life to improve my health?”

IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM

Perhaps you would like to quit smoking, drink more water, clean up your diet, overcome a health challenge, cleanse or exer-cise regularly. Whatever you want to accomplish, identify the problem as specifically as you can. Half of the solution to any problem is to define it.

BURN YOUR BRIDGES

Make a solid commit-ment to yourself to achieve your goals and do not turn back. If necessary, get rid of the things that allow you to give up easily. For example, if you are going to quit smoking, throw out all the ashtrays, matches and lighters. Have you heard the story about the general who took his army by ship to conquer another coun-try? After seeing the enemy, his soldiers thought they would lose the battle and wanted to return home. However, the general had ordered all their ships to be burned and told his army that there was no choice... They had to win!

BELIEVE IT’S POSSIBLE

In order to do some-thing, you must believe you can succeed. Napoleon Hill, a great success phi-losopher, stated: “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” This quote has helped countless individuals achieve their goals. Tell yourself you can do it! Do not allow “I can’t” to be a part of your vocabu-lary, at all! It is very important to have positive thoughts. Do not entertain negative thoughts, what-soever! You have not failed until you quit trying!

MEASURE AND CONTROL

Set a goal that is mea-surable, so that you know how you are doing. If you want to lose weight, for example, decide how many pounds you will lose in a certain amount of time, for example, 12 pounds in three months. It must be a goal that you can control, not one that someone else controls. You can change your own behavior, not somebody else’s.

MAKE A PLAN

You’ve heard the saying: Plan your work and work your plan. Write your goal

down on paper, outlining exactly what you want to achieve. Include dates and numbers, if applicable. You will do much better with a definite plan and time frame. Break down your overall goal into achievable steps. Take one step at a time. This is less overwhelming than trying to tackle a larger problem all at once.

PROGRAM IT IN

This step is all-impor-tant. Program the required activities into your daily life, so that you do not depend on willpower. Willpower comes and goes. Treat this like a business decision. For instance, if your goal is to exercise daily, set a specific time to exercise and keep your exercise appointments. You would not likely stand anybody else up, if that person is important to you. Do not stand yourself up. You are just as important! Show up for your own appointments! Set up your lifestyle to support your health goals. Do not leave any room in your life for failure.

KEEP TRACK

Keep a daily log of all your goal-oriented activi-ties and results, so you can track your progress. As you accomplish more, you will become even more encouraged. This can cre-ate a positive momentum to spur you on!

TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES

Be accountable! Tell someone your goal, some-one who can look over your shoulder and check up on you every day. If you do not do your part, it should cost you something. For instance, if you dare to skip your exercise for the day, there has to be a con-sequence. You need to decide what this conse-quence will be ahead of time, when you define your New Year’s resolution. How serious a consequence this will be is up to you.

Choose something that will motivate you to keep your commitment faith-fully.

PLAN FOR SUCCESS

To summarize, identify your health goal very spe-cifically, and determine to persevere. Pick a resolu-tion that you can control and measure. Believe that it is possible to achieve. Write down your plan, breaking up the total goal into achievable steps. Then, rearrange your life, so that you will succeed, not having to depend on willpower. When willpow-er is sagging, the structure in your daily life must be able to carry you through. Keep track of your prog-

ress and be accountable, suffering the pre-planned consequence if and when you decide to slack. Plan to win, prepare to win and expect to win!
