The Spirited Thoughts of Homecoming By M.ToppingErik Nelson- “It was fun, but it was hard to get stuff done because of the snow day. It sucked that I couldn’t be there on Friday for the pep rally.”Kurtis Gordon- “I thought it was fun because we took 2nd. I didn’t like the fact that tug-of-war was played back to back and the way that flag football went. I felt that this year a lot of the fun was taken away from homecoming because of hallways and the songs that were picked for us.”

Valentines DayEditorial by John BurgYoung hearts are filled with love. Emotions run high, it’s a stressful time. But for young love birds its worth the wait. Not. Valentines day, hah, what a crock of feces. “Valentines Day is a wonderful demonstration of Ameri-can stupidity,” says Weston Thier. Forrest Howk states, “ It’s an American conspiracy designed by Hallmark and Hershey’s corpora-tions.” Peter Atkins adamantly states, “ What kind of sick holiday is this? Winged old men in diapers fly around shooting people in the heart with arrows.” And he’s right. Do people really believe they’ll find eternal happiness? All you’ll get from an arrow in the heart is an early grave. I think Valentines Day is a pimple on the face of American society on the level of Guantanamo Bay, and I won’t stand for it, or sit either. We must destroy this fascist machine before it takes over all com-mon sense. For those of you who have seen through the feeble smokescreen, come, rise with me now and break the chains.¡VIVA LA REVOLUTION!

Do we have Stereotypes? By: Camille Bohnert Cheerleaders.... jocks….. science geeks. Bayfield doesn’t really have these stereotypical groups but according to our students we do have some. I asked random kids in the high school if they thought we had stereotypes or cliques. Most of the kids didn’t really know, “This is hard” was the response I heard from quite a few people. But I did get some answers. The following is a list of Bayfield’s stereotype groups according to our students. “GAMERS” “REZ KIDS” “SKATEBOARDERS” “ATHLETES” “GOTHS/PUNKS” “BAYFIELD KIDS/RED CLIFF KIDS”

“REDNECKS” “WANABEE GANGSTAS” A lot of people told me that we don’t really have specific groups. I got the Red Cliff /Bayfield response a lot but people weren’t so sure how to say it. “A lot of Red Cliff kids hang out with Bayfield kids and vice versa, actually” was something I heard from just about everyone who brought this up. It’s hard to divide our school into groups. It’s also hard to tell if we really have them. One thing is for sure. We aren’t as segregated as the schools in the movies, which is something I think we can all agree on.

I am the new student, Jonnie Soria, and I came from Washington. I had been going to school there for all my life until half way through my senior year when I had the chance to move to Wisconsin in hopes of graduating on time. What is it like for me to move to a Wisconsin school? It is very different in many ways; it is hard to get used to not seeing my friends, family, and teachers that I have seen all of my life while going to school and seeing everyday at my house. Then this all changed just by going to a new school in a different state. I now see new people, teachers, and get to experience a different style of living. The thing I like about this school is the fact that it is small. I only have

to walk down the hall to get to my next class compared to 900 students crowding the hallways and a five minute walk to my locker every hour. This school is also better because it is not as strict and there aren’t any cameras watching your every move. Another big change to get used to is the weather; it was a big shock for me when I first came to this state. The differences are extreme. The coldest weather I had ever experienced before was about 10 degrees, compared to -30 wind chill here. Overall, I enjoy being in a very different town and school because it gives me the option to experience new things, people, and surroundings, and I like the school I am at right now.

Students Play Flag FootballBy: Zach Boutin

What good is homecoming without some sports that any student can participate in? This year the sports were volleyball and flag football. Unfortunately, students were unable to play due to the cancellation of school on Wednesday, January 30. Flag football was played Thursday after lunch and reffed by Mr. O’Neill and Mr. Penner. Each class picked four girls and four guys to play and played six on six with two subs. After a couple of hours of intense play the juniors (3-0) came out on top followed by the seniors (2-1), the sophomores (1-2), and the freshmen (0-3). All in all everyone played hard and, for the most part, with good sportsmanship. A student from each class was asked what they thought of the game. Senior, Malia North said, “I had fun playing.” Junior D.J. Bressler said, “I had a lot of fun because we won.” Sophomore Dickie Topping said, “I had a lot of fun and it was exciting.” Freshman Faron Beaulieu said, “It was awesome. I felt like I was Tom Brady.”

Due to the on going writers strike, many big name stars have threatened to not attend this years handing out of the Os-cars. Are you thinking of going to college? All students going to four year colleges must take the ACT test. The ACT test will set you back 30 Dollars. This April, Sally Kessler will be giving a free practice version of the ACT called “PLAN.” Usually this test is for tenth graders but Sally is making it available to all Bayfield High School students. The great thing about the PLAN test is that it is free and has no risk. No colleges will be notified of the results. Students taking the test will get results comparable to the real ACT test. They will get sub scores in the areas of math, science, social studies, English, and a composite score. The composite score is the average of all the other scores. Look for posters indicating time and date of the PLAN test.

Skiing to Success Peter Atkins

The Ashwabay ski team continues to devastate the competition in the Northern Ski League (NSL). On January 31, Mt. Ashwabay hosted the third NSL meet. Skiing on familiar territory, both the Ashwabay boys and girls teams took first. The boys won the meet with 98 points, 29 points ahead of second place Wausau West. On February 4, the Ashwabay ski team traveled to Mt. La Crosse for the Quillin’s Cup Invitational. Competing against skiers from all over Wisconsin, the Ashwabay boys’ team came in fifth while the girls’ team took seventh. “It was good practice for State.” said Weston Thier. Unfortunately Elvira Moreno suffered a freak shoulder dislocation and couldn’t ski. She will be unable to compete in the rest of the ski meets and will be missed. The final ski meet of the season is at Granite Peak, Wausau on February 12. Both Ashwabay teams are most likely going to finish in the top three in the NSL and compete at the State Meet. The Wisconsin High School State Meet will be held at Mt. La Crosse on February 17 and 18.

Will Brett Favre Return?By: Zach Boutin

With the football season ending, the same ques-tion for the Green Bay Packers and their fans lingers again from pre-vious years: will Brett Favre return for the 2008-2009 season? Accord-ing to Coach McCarthy, “we’ll know in a couple of weeks.” I surveyed twenty people to see if they thought he would return or not. Eighty percent of the people said that he would re-turn, while the other 20% said no. So what do you think? Should he throw in the towel after having one of the greatest seasons of his career? Or, should he return for another season? Hopefully, we’ll know soon enough.

Barrel Recovery PlanBy: S. Reyes-Buffalo

Recently The Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa contracted with the EMR and US Army Corp of Engineers on Work Plan Set to safely investigate the 1,449 barrels and the 400 tons of crates deposited in Lake Superior by the Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant; which at the time was run by Honeywell Corp.

The Work Plan Set includes three components; a Field Sampling Plan (FSP), a Site Safety and Health Plan (SSHP), and a Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP). The work was funded by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the Native American Lands Environmental Mitigation Program (NALEMP).

The council

in Red Cliff will be receiving grant for 603,000 to proceed with the Work Set Plan. The will receive 15,000 for their budget in October of this year. Upon completion of the FSP, sufficient data will be collected to perform a risk assessment to determine whether sufficient threat exists.

Two distinct phases of investigation are discussed in the Field Sampling Plan, a geophysical sampling plan, and a sampling recovery plan. The Geophysical portion discusses the methods and procedures that will be used to determine the location and condition of the potential barrels submerged. There are two types of geophysical surveys; side scan and sector scan survey. The side scan survey will be used to determine the location of the potential

barrels, while the sector scan survey will be used to pinpoint location and assess the conduction of the potential barrels. The second phase will consist of lake water and sediment sampling followed by barrel recovery and barrel content sampling. The sampling and recovery portion of this project will be used to collect the analytical data required in order to perform a human heath risk assessment and an ecological risk assessment in accordance with the EPA Risk Assessment Guidance for Superfund Sites.

The environmental council of Red Cliff also will be selecting student from the BHS science class to accompany them on the vessel in October to help with the Field Sampling Plan.

The History of Valentine’s DayBy: M ToppingEvery February 14 people send their friends or loved ones cards, candy, flowers, and gifts, but does anyone know where the tradition started or where it came from? The exact history of Valentine’s Day is a mystery, but everyone still knows it as a day of romance. Today Valentine’s Day contains characteristics of both Christian and Roman tradition. The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.

One legend says that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing that Claudius II was wrong, opposed him and continued to marry lovers secretly. When Claudius discovered what Valentine was doing he ordered him to be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentine was put to death because he attempted to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were beaten and tortured.

According to another legend, Valentine sent the first love greeting while in prison to a young girl he fell in love with. The young girl was thought to be the jailer’s daughter, who visited him during his time spent in prison. Before his death, people believe that he sent her a letter, which he signed ‘From your Valentine,’ the same expression that is commonly used today.

Even though the history of Valentine’s Day is not known for sure, St.Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France during the Middle Ages.

Setting nets under the iceBy. Shawn Hanson Are you wondering how fisherman set gill-nets under the ice. A lot of people don’t know how it is done but you will after you read this. Setting nets under the ice is a difficult task if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing. The first thing you do is find a spot on the ice that you want to set your nets. After you picked the spot where you want to set, you drill 3 or 4 hole with an ice auger and use a chisel to chop the ice in between the holes out. About a foot away from the hole you chop a hole about 5 inches into the ice and you put a stick into it and pack slush around the stick so it

freezes. The next thing you do is you have to get your running board and tie a 325 foot rope to the end of your running board. A running board is a 100 foot long board made out of cedar. At the end of the rope you tie a net to it. Now you take one end of the running board and push in down into the hole and slide the whole running board under the ice. The next thing you do is you take a 100 foot rope and walk in the direction the board if going until the rope is tight. At the end of the rope you have to drill another hole. Then you take a long bent hook called a sweep hook and stick it down the hole and grab the

end off the running board. Now you take a long sharp hook and grab the running board and slide it under the ice until you get to the end. Then you grab your 100 foot rope and walk in the direction the board is going and drill another hole at the end. You have to slide the board under the ice again and walk to rope out and drill a hole. At this hole you will drill 2 holes instead of 1. This hole is called a net hole. Now you grab your hook and pull up the 325 foot line you tied onto the end of the running board and walk toward the first hole you drilled. While one guys is pulling the rope to-ward the first hole, another

guys is spreading the net at the first hole so the nets go under the ice straight. As soon as the guy pulling the rope gets to the first hole, one whole net is under the ice. Now you get an anchor and tie it to a long rope. About 6 feet up from the anchor you tie a loop in the rope and you tie your net onto the loop. Now you put the anchor in the hole and let it sink until it hits the bottom. After it hits the bot-tom you cut the rope and tie another loop and put it over the stick. Now you take the 325 foot rope and tie it back to the end of the running board and do the whole pro-cess over until you set all of your nets.

The Boy’s Basketball SeasonBy M. Gordon

The boy’s basketball team is coming to the end of its season with a record of (7-11) overall and (4-11) in the Indianhead Conference. With tournaments around the corner the Trollers need to regroup and play good basketball. Bayfield was given a number (4) seed which means our first tournament game is at home, against the Drummond Lumberjacks. Earlier in the season the Trollers were on a slump with two starters out because of injuries and suspensions. The freshmen built an amusement park and came in third.Safe StructuresP. Atkins This year homecoming wasn’t quite the same without the hall-way decorations. In years past, hallways were transformed into board games, movie scenes, and landscapes, but not any more. With all the tragic school burnings in the news and the radical reforms in school fire safety, it was recently decided that the tons of paper, cardboard, and other highly flammable materials that were used to cover the walls of the halls are “fire hazards.” To replace the hallway decorations, Mr. Homecoming him-self, Alan Rogers, and the homecoming committee came up with the idea of free standing structures. Students were to create a structure that had to be supported only by a 3’ by 3’ platform and fit through the doors into the gym.

The Cat in the Hat led the sophomores to second place.

The juniors took fourth with a pow-wow scene.

Arrhhh matey. The seniors took first with a pirate ship.

This is the first of many tasty recipes to come in future Septentrion issues. Enjoy this tasty favorite every time of year for a delicious compliment to any meal. The recipe was taken from the 2008 senior class, which they used to make their Applefest pies.

The Senior Standard -crust5 cups flour¾ lb. lard½ tsp. salt1 tsp. sugar1 egg yolk w/ water (equaling one cup)-save the egg whites and brush them on the dough crust before baking-once the crust is complete and ready for baking, put into it enough apples so that the pie has a “heaping” look to it. -In a separate bowl, mix together a 5:1 ratio mixture of sugar to flour with a touch of cinnamon and add one heaping cup of the mixture to the apples, which should already be in the pie crust.- Finish the pie off with one tablespoon butter on the top of the pie before sticking it in the oven. Make sure to make enough pie so that you will not have to pace yourself when eating it….you must make enough so that it is worth it to yourself and others.

By Weston Thier Some readers may remember the recent article (December ’07) on the fledgeling ping pong club at Bayfield High School. Put together by teacher representative Darryl Penner and several of his young colleagues, the club is currently holding its first ever informal ping pong tournament. There are eight people participating now, with the objective being to set up a type of ranking system for future tournaments. According to veteran BPP club member John Burg, “The camaraderie and competition is pretty cool between the participants.” If you are interested in joining, or have any ideas of future tournaments, contact Mr. Penner in his room located in the hallway to the band room.
